WWCMB: West Warwick defeats Westerly in Connie Mack opener, 6-3!
West Warwick 6 Westerly 3
In the Rhode Island Connie Mack opener, West Warwick came from behind to defeat Westerly, 6-3.
After falling behind 2-0 on two unearned runs, West Warwick scored five runs on four hits for a 5-2 lead in the top of the third inning.
Dominic Bisceglio lead off with a walk, advanced to third when an attempted pick off at first base was thrown into right field, and scored on Sam Williamson’s r.b.i. single to left field. After Williamson advance to third on a Ryan Lawton single to right field, he scored on Matt Grosso’s single to right field. Jon Masse reached on a fielder’s choice, putting runners at first and third for future sophomore catcher, Nathan Lacroix. Lacroix took a 1-1 pitch and hit a two run double to right center, scoring Lawton and Masse. Lacroix later scored on a errant throw when Chris Viveiros (reached on an error) stole second base.
Pitcher, Jon Masse, then took control of the game, by striking out five batters over the next three innings. In six innings of work, Masse held Westerly to only three hits, while throwing 57 of his 77 pitches for strikes.
In the top of the seventh inning, West Warwick added an insurance run when Masse reached on a hit batsman, advanced to third on Lacroix’s third hit of the game, and scored on Chris Viveiros’ sacrifice fly to center field.
Ryan Lawton picked up the save by pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
Offensively, West Warwick received hits from Sam Williamson (1/4, one run scored and one r.b.i.), Ryan Lawton (1/4, one run scored), Matt Grosso (2/4, one r.b.i.), Jon Masse (two runs scored and one r.b.i.), Nathan Lacroix (3/4, one run scored and two r.b.i.’s), and Chris Viveiros (1/3, one r.b.i.).
