Varsity Baseball: Wizards win league opener, 2-1!
The West Warwick Wizards started their 2009 league season with a 2-1 road win over the East Providence Townies.
Led by the combined two-hit pitching of seniors Richard Lizotte and Anthony Giarusso, the Wizards were able to hold onto the crossover win over their I-East opponent. Lizotte struck out five, walked four, allowed one hit and one earned run in the first three innings. Giarusso, who picked up the victory, allowed only one hit while striking out four in the last four innings of the game. Giarusso, who seemed to get stronger with every pitch, threw only five pitches in a 1-2-3 seventh inning.
After two scoreless innings, West Warwick took a brief 1-0 lead with one out in the top of the third inning. Jeff Sampaio singled to right field, stole second base, advanced to third base on a single by Dillon Coffua, and scored on Sam Williamson's ground out to short.
In the top of the fifth inning, Derek Hebert singled, advanced to second base on Sampaio's sacrifice bunt, and later scored on a two out error on a grounder by Aaron Richards.
Offensively, the Wizards were led by Tim Parente (2 for 3), Jeff Sampaio (1 for 2, one run scored), Dillon Coffua (1 for 3), Derek Hebert (1 for 3, one run scored), and Charley Parent (1 for 3).
