West Warwick Wizards Varsity:  The Wizards (2-16 in I-South, 4-16 overall) honored their eleven seniors this past week.  Graduating from this year's team are Nick Carney, Dillon Coffua, Matt Grosso, Amine Malki, Kurtis Melvin, Charley Parent, Tim Parente, Brent Reed, Jeff Sampaio, and Chris Viveiros. Check out the Handouts section for the Wizards' team leaders and 2010 stats.  

Senior Charley Parent received First Team All Division Honors.  The senior, who began the season going 0/12, finished the season with a .357 batting average (15/42 with 18 runs scored, 9 r.b.i.'s, ten walks, eight hit batsmen, and an OBP of .567).

Senior Sam Williamson received Second Team All Division Honors.  The senior, who led the Wizards with twenty hits this season, finished the season with a .313 batting average (20/64, 12 runs scored, seven walks, and an OBP of .437).  In addition to that, Williamson ended the year with a .926 fielding average.

Senior Jeff Sampaio, who was unable to play this year, received Division I-South's "Brian Fell" nomination for his outstanding commitment and perserverance over his four year career at West Warwick High School.

Senior Dillon Coffua, who finished the year with a .254 batting average (18/71, 8 runs scored and 10 r.b.i.'s), received the Academic Excellence Award in Division I-South for his success in the classroom and on the field.  Coffua is ranked in the top 15 percent of the senior class.  

Titan Sports Orioles 7  Gordon Orthodontics Yankees 2:

In the West Warwick Cal Ripken league opener, the Orioles defeated the Yankees, 7-2. The Orioles, the clear favorite to win this year's Cal Ripken League Championship, were led by the pitching of Hunter Dean, Ernie Wright, and Trevor Lawton.  The trio of pitchers struck out 15 Yankees. In fact, Wright and Lawton combined to strike out 9 of the 12 Yankees they faced from the fourth inning on.  Offensively, the Orioles were led by Ernie Wright (two run scored), Ray Zincone (2/3, one home run, and two runs scored), Trevor Lawton (2/3, one home run), Tyler McGregor (one run scored), Billy Singpracha(1/2, one run scored), Billy Hollihen (one single). The Yankees received offensive support from Caleb Hoyle (2/3, one double and one triple), David LaMountain (1/3), and Tom Doran (2/3, one double).  

Gordon Orthodontics Yankees 10  D&D Construction Marlins 0:

10 year old Mike Defusco led the Yankees to a 10-0 victory in a five inning perfect game.   Defusco struck out 12 of 15 batters to help the Yankees pick up their firts victory of the year. Offensively, the Yankees received help from Defusco (1/4, one run scored), David LaMountain (1/4, one run scored, and one triple), Caleb Hoyle(1/3, two runs scored), Tom Doran (one double), Matt Gambardella (one single and two runs scored), Trevor Caddick (1/1, one run scored), Thomas Bellrose (one run scored), and Brogan Guillmette (1/1, one run scored).  

 Titan Sports Orioles 6  WW PIC Athletics 2:

Led by the hitting of Ray Zincone (2/3, double, home run, and three runs scored) and Trevor Lawton (1/2, one run scored and one r.b.i. triple), the Titan Sports Orioles came from behind to defeat the WW PIC Athletics, 6-2. In the top of the first inning, the A's jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Matt Grenier doubled and then, scored on Andrew In's first home run of the year. In the bottom of the first inning, the Orioles scored a run with two outs when Ray Zincone doubled and scampered home on a two base error.   While lefty Tyler Macgregor cooled down the A's bats with two innings of no-hit relief, the O's took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning with three runs on a walk (Ernie Wright), an error (Zincone), a r.b.i. triple and stolen base of home by Trevor Lawton.  Lawton, also, closed the game by striking out six and allowing two hits in two innings pitched. Offensively, the O's received hits from Zincone (2/3, three runs scored, one double and one fifth inning home run), Lawton (one r.b.i. triple), and Noah Larrivee. The Athletics received hits from Matt Grenier (2/3, one run scored and a double), Andrew In (2/3, one two run home run), and Stanley Paulino (1/3).  Also, the A's pitchers (Paulino, In, Alex Hernandez, and Allen Flyntz) recorded 14 of the 15 Oriole outs via strikeouts.

 Titan Sports Orioles 15  Murphy & Fay Dodgers 3:

The Orioles defeated the Dodgers by the score of 15-3 to improve to 3-0 on the young season.  The Orioles as they pounded Dodger pitching for 15 hits.  Leading the hit parade were Trevor Lawton (2/2, one grand slam and 7 r.b.i.'s), Ray Zincone (3/3, three runs scored and 3 r.b.i.'s), Ernie Wright (2/2, three runs scored), and Noel Larrivee(1/2 with one run scored, and 1 r.b.i.).  In addition to that Tim Fournier and Billy Rae Singpracha both singled and scored two runs. The Dodgers were led by Mike Pellerin (1/1, two runs scored, and one walk).  On the mound for the Orioles, Hunter Dean, Ernie Wright and Tyler McGregor combined to one hit the Dodgers.

Titan Sports Orioles 13  D&D Construction Marlins 3:

The Orioles improved to 4-0 with an impressive victory over the D&D Construction Marlins,13-3. In a game that was much closer than the final score, the Orioles broke open the game after Marlin Ace, Joe Maynard left the game after three innings.  Maynard pitched the first three innings allowing just two earned runs while striking out nine O’s.  Meanwhile, the O’s used the combine pitching of Hunter Dean, Ernie Wright and Tyler McGregor (ten strikeous) to hold the Marlins to two hits.Once in the Marlin bullpen, the Orioles bats erupted for ten runs on nine hits over the final two innings.  Leading the way for the Orioles were Ray Zincone (3/3, four runs scored and 4 r.b.i.’s), Trevor Lawton (3/3 , three runs scored, one home run, and 4 r.b.i.’s), Bill Holihen (2/2, one run scored and 1 r.b.i.), and Billy Rae Singpracha (2/4, two runs scored and 1 r.b.i.).   The Marlins were led by Joe Maynard (2/3, one run scored and 1 r.b.i.). 

D&D Construction Marlins 9  Centreville Bank Red Sox 6:

The D&D construction Marlins came from behind to defeat the Centreville Bank Red Sox, 9-6. The Red Sox took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on two walks (Nick D'Ambra, Anthony Hernandez)and two errors. In the bottom of the first inning, the Marlins tied it with two runs on hits Jared Shibley, Joe Maynard, Mike Charnley, and Nathaniel Snow. In the top of the third inning, the Red Sox took a 4-3 lead when Andrew D'Ambrosca reached on a fielder's choice, moved to second on Tyler Boisclair's single, and scored on Anthony Herrera's bloop double. After tying the game in the fourth inning when Brian Moretti walked and scored on one single and two errors, the Marlins finally broke open the game with five runs keyed by Joe Maynard's three run triple. Offensively, the Red Sox were led by Tyler Boisclair (2/4), Anthony Herrera (one double), Jordan Hedrick (one triple).The Marlins were led by Joe Maynard (3/3, one triple and 4 r.b.i.'s). 

Centreville Bank Red Sox 10  Murphy & Fay Dodgers 6:

After trailing 6-0 in the first inning, the Centreville Bank Red Sox came from behind to defeat the Murphy & Fay Dodgers, 10-6. In top of the first inning, the Dodgers scored six runs on four errors and hits by Jason Paquette, Mike Pellerin (double), Matt Hopper (double), Justin Rutter single), and Mike Capuano (single). In the bottom of the first inning, the Red Sox got three runs back on hits from Andrew D'Ambrosca (single), Tyler Boisclair (two run home run), Mitchell Moore (double), and Jordan Henrick (single).   In the bottom of the third inning, the Red Sox pulled ahead of the Dodgers with seven runs on three walks (Nick D'Ambra, Henrick, and Mike Tetrault), one error, and hits by D'Ambrosca (two singles), Boisclair (singel and double), Moore (single), and Jacob Valenti-Ochs (single). Ryan Blais struck out three batters and scattered six hits.  Jacob Valenti-Ochs closed the game by pitching two scoreless innings.   

 Gordon Orthodontics Yankees 9  Murphy & Fay Dodgers 2:

Led by the hitting of Mike Defusco (3/4), Caleb Hoyle (3/3, three runs scored and one double), Tom Doran (3/3, one run scored), and Matt Gambardella (1/3, one run scored), the Gordon Orthodontics Yankees defeated the Dodgers, 9-2.   In the bottom of the first inning, the Yankees jumped out to a 5-0 lead on two walks (Chris Gaipo and Alex Cabral) and singles by Defusco, Hoyle, and Doran. While Mike Defusco (four strikeouts) kept the Dodgers scoreless the first two innings, the Yankees upped their lead to 8-0 on hits by Defusco (single), Hoyle (double), and Doran (single).   In the top of the sixth inning, the Dodgers rallied for two runs on a Joe Paquette walk and hits by Kyle Henseler (double) and Kyle Murphy (double). 

Gordon Orthodontics Yankees 5  Centreville Bank Red Sox 4:

In an exciting game between the Yankees and Red Sox, the Yankees edged the Red Sox, 5-4. In the bottom of the first inning, the Red Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Nick D'Ambra (single) and Andrew D'Ambrosca (walk) scored on a Tyler Boisclair single and error. In the top of the third inning, the Yankees took a 3-2 lead when Travis Caddick (hit batsmen), Chris Gaipo (single) scored on Mike Defusco two run single.  Defusco, later, raced home on an error. The Yankees took a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning when Thomas Belrose walked, advanced to second and third on passed balls, and scored on a fielder's choice by Mike DeFusco. In the bottom of the fifth inning, the Red Sox tied it up when Tyler Boisclair hit a two run home run.   In the top of the sixth inning, however, Caleb Hoyle reached on an error, advance to third on a wild pitch, a scored the eventual winning run on Tom Doran's first hit of the game. Caleb Hoyle put the clamp on any Red Sox rally by striking out three batters in the bottom of the sixth inning.  

  Centreville Bank Red Sox 12  WW PIC Athletics 11 (9 innings):

In a three hour marathon filled with more thrills than a roller-coaster ride, the Centreville Bank Red Sox edged the WW PIC Athletics, 12-11 when Tyler Boisclair (3/4, three runs scored, two home runs, one double, and 7 r.b.i.'s)took a 1-2 offering and hit a walk off home run. In the bottom of the first inning, the Red Sox took advantage of three Athletic errors to go up 3-0.  After two runs scored (Nick D'Ambra and Andrew D'Ambrosca) on a dropped fly ball, Boisclair scored on Jacob Valenti-Ochs' single to centerfield.   In the bottom of the second inning, the Red Sox scored two runs with two outs when Boisclair doubled in Mike Tetrault and Nick D'Ambra.    The Athletics cut the lead to 5-2 in the top of the third inning on hits by Matt Grenier (single), Ryan Johnson (r.b.i. double), and Matt Reid (r.b.i. single).   The Red Sox seemed to put the game away in the bottom of the fourth inning when Tyler Boisclair hit a grand slam with two outs.  Scoring on the blast were Anthony Herrera (fielder's choice), Nate Woodside (walk), and Nick D'Ambra (walk). Down 9-2, the Athletics, who had left six runners stranded in the first four innings, came back with four walks, three stolen bases, one error and Logan Chapman's second hit of the game. The Red Sox, however, came right back with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jordan Henrick and Noah Valenti-Ochs scored on a walk and two errors. In the top of the sixth inning to the dismay of the Red Sox faithful, the A's scored five runs on five walks and hits by Grenier (single), In (r.b.i. triple), Alex Hernandez (r.b.i. single), and Johnson.   As the game moved into three extra innings, the pitching of both teams finally took over the game.   After Tyler Boisclair, who started the game, struck out the side in the top of the seventh inning for the Red Sox, Athletic Ace, Matt Grenier followed that up by striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh inning. After Jordan Henrick retired the A's in order in the top of the eighth inning, Grenier struck out three Red Sox batters again in the bottom half of the inning. In the top of the ninth inning, Grenier walked with one out, stole second,advance to third base on a passed ball, only to be stranded as Henrick retired the next two batters on a pop-up and ground out. That set the stage for Boisclair's dramatic walk off home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning.
