Phoenix Christian's track team kicked off the 2006 season a week late, but it was worth the wait. The girls team, now a dozen strong (up from the usual 5 or 6) showed up with 6 girls and finished second to perinnial power Greenway. Facing teams with an average rostero f 20 girls, Kristen Shook, Megan Van Hofwegen, Domoneek Staten, Alex Cisco, Ashley Cowen and Bianca Marchand piled up points where they could. The Lady Cougars have played 2nd fiddle to the boys for years, Tonite they made a mark and sent a message to the other 2A metro teams. They led off with a 2nd place finish in the 4x800 relay with a squad that featured Shook, VanHofwegen, Cowen & Cisco. The girls 4x100 stole the show blowing away the field as Staten, Marchand, VanHofwagen & Cisco take first place in PC's best 4x100 effort in years. The girls fared well in sprint events as Staten & Marchand placed 2nd in 5th in their first ever 100 meter hurdles races. The two took 3rd & 5th in the 100. The two teamed up with van Hofwegen to take 3 of 5 places in the 200. Shook looks as if she is returning to her freshman form with a 3rd place finish in the 3200. Ashley was 6th in the mile. The boys team fared well despite a scare in the hurdles as Matt Kredit fell on the last hurdle in a tight finish. Region champion Micah kuiper was 3rd in the high jump. The boys 4x800, a source of pride at Phoenix Christian, placed 4th as underclassmen Nick Fitzpatrick, John Vermeer, Naje' Singleton and Tyce VanHofwagen performed well as a group of underclassmen running against seasoned vets. The same group minus Fitz placed 4th in the 4x400. Danny Lazarre, running in his first race in two years, was 3rd in the 100. Freshman Adam Watkins was 5th. Fitzpatrick was 6th in the 3200, Jeff Eduard was 5th in the shot.
