Youth was served at the spring league tryouts March 12 at Santaluces. The top two picks were teenagers as the 18AA champion Angels selected left handed hitting outfielder Sean Conner, an 18 year old from Lake Worth, and the A's, who finished as the runnerup to the Angels in the fall 18AA league, selected 19-year old pitcher-first baseman Richard Maguire of West Palm Beach. Twenty-year old infielder/outfielder Vincent Jenco of Wellington was selected by the Rockhounds, but expressed a desire to play in the 18AA league this season. The Rockhounds agreed to send him to the 18AA Rangers after the draft. The Whitecaps selected 28 year old David Cruz, who recently moved to Boynton Beach after living and playing ball in New York. Cruz plays a couple of infield positions and can pitch. The Whitecaps are hoping he will fit in with their squad as well as Fall League draftee Kenny Rua, who had a nice season in his first campaign in the league. 18AA teams selected the remaining fifteen players.
