Posted by Lou Palmer on Feb 01 2006 at 04:00PM PST
The Western Division All Stars, anchored by a half dozen members of the first place Cardinals, turned the 18AA Fall League All Star game into a rout, drubbing the East Division 14-3, led by the division leading Limo Limo Rockhounds, Wednesday night, February 1, at the Santaluces Complex in Lantana. The game, as well as the 18AAA All Star clash, scheduled for the following night, had to be moved because of continuing light problems at the Lantana Sports Complex. The West scored seven runs in the first three innings to set the tone. Raul DeCastro (Cardinals) singled in a run in the first off Chip Burdett (Brewers). Jackie Stewart (Angels) led off the second with a long homer to the parking lot in right field, and hits by Anthony Santos (Astros), Fernando Miranda (Marlins) and Jeff Schector (Angels), a walk, wild pitch, infield grounder and an error led to four more in the second. Jackson Munoz (Cardinals) singled home a run in the third, and later scored on a wild pitch. The East scored one in the third inning on a hit by Nestor Sanjurjo (Cubans), who advanced to second on an outfield error and scored on a single to left by Angelo DePolo (Los Potros). Five more West runs in the fifth put it out of reach. They capitalized on four walks and a wild pitch by John Corporal (Duffy’s Devil Rays), who failed to get a batter out in the inning before being relieved by the Rockhounds’ Matt Sanchez. Rick Mullan had a two-run single and Munoz an RBI hit in the inning. Anthony Santos and Mullan stole bases, and Andrew (Rangers) stole home in the wild inning., Corporal, who moved to left field when Sanchez took over, ended the inning with the defensive play of the game, a diving catch of a line drive hit the DeCastro. RBI hits by Fariello and Schector accounted for the West’s final two runs in the 7th inning. The East scored two unearned runs in the ninth on hits by Robert Mil and Eric Morales, both from the Rockhounds, a passed ball and a dropped pop up on an infield fly rule call. Stewart, who also hd a single and was involved in two double plays, was chosen as the game’s Most Valuable Player. Munoz led all hitters with three singles and two runs batted. Mullan had a double, single and two RBIs, and Schector also had two hits and two runs drive in. Morales led the East with two hits. Drew Austin (Cardinals) earned the win under the special All Star scoring rules. He pitched two scoreless innings, giving up only a bloop single and fanning three. Burdett, the East starter, took the loss.
