FALL 03---LOS TIGRES WINS 18AAA CHAMPIONSHIP AS LEAGUE'S FIRST UNBEATEN TEAM CINDERELLA EXPOS CAPTURE 18AA CROWN Los Tigres rewrote the record book on Sunday, defeating the Home Run Sports Rockets 12-5 at the Lantana Sports Complex in the Fall 2003 league's championship game. In winning their fifth league title, Los Tigres also became the first team in the 12-year, 24 season history of the NABA Palm Beach league to go undefeated through the regular season, playoffs and championship games. All told, Los Tigres went 16-0. They won the regular season title with a perfect 14-0 mark, defeated the Red Sox 10-5 in the semifinals before adding the Rockets to their list of victims. Juan Perez had three hits, scored four runs and drove in one for Los Tigres, but Jhovany William earned MVP honors by driving in four runs on a two run double and a two run home run. CJ Huffman went five innings to earn the victory. For the Rockets, Mike Draper drove in a pair of runs with a double and a single. Romy Ones and Brian Fitzsimmons had two hits apiece, and Willie Martinez had one hit and three runs batted in. Click on the headline below for more details. EXPOS WIN 18AA TITLE AS NUMBER FOUR SEED The Expos, who just managed to finish over .500 during the regular season, are the Cinderella team of the 18AA league, beating the third seeded Marlins 8-2 in the championship game Sunday at the Santaluces Complex. After knocking off the top seeded, regular season champion Dobson Roofing Hurricanes 10-5 in the semifinals, the Expos rode the pitching of Danny Moya and Roberto Laboy to an 8-2 victory over the Marlins. The Marlins also pulled an upset in the semifinals, ousting the second seeded Boynton Red Sox 10-5. JJ Medina was the top offensive player for the Expos in the title game with a double, single and sacrifice fly to drive in three runs. Jeff Schector also had a double and single for the Expos who jumped into a 3-1 lead after an inning and never looked back. Moya was chosen as the game's Most Valuable Player, going six innings and scattering eight hits and yielding only two runs. Laboy pitched the final three shutout innings, allowing only three harmless singles. The 18AA title is the second for the upstart Expos, who won the fall league title in 2000. Los Tigres trailed 6-4 going to the top of the ninth inning, but rallied for six runs to beat the Orioles 10-6. Orioles' pitching woes opened the door for the Tigres, who drew three walks and a hit batsman off Orioles' closer Brad Hoffer, but a two run single by Pedro Liriano, a two run triple by Francis Dinzey and an RBI double by Amado Dinzey spiced up the six run inning. Liriano, who had four hits, was chosen as the game's Most Valuable Player. Amado had a solo homer and a a single to go with his ninth inning two bagger. Orlando Araujo also homered for Los Tigres. Reliever Ramon Linares (4 1/3 IP) got credit for the win. Stefan Clark led the Orioles with four hits in five trips, plus a walk. Bobby Knapp had a two run double, Jim McDonough a two run triple and Joe McKenna a solo homer and a double. The loss went to Hoffer, the third of four Orioles' pitchers. He was charged with four runs in only 1/3 of an inning even though he did not give up a hit. The Orioles had gone into the post season as the top seed, winning the American Division, then beating the Mets and Twins in the playoffs. Los Tigres was seeded second after winning the National Division, downing Glory Days and the six time champion Indians in the playoffs. The 18AA game was a thriller that was decided in the eleventh inning when Jim Bergman cracked a long single to score MVP Noel Vasquez from third base as the Hurricanes nipped the Marlins 12-11. Vasquez led off the inning with his fifth hit of the game, moved to second on a bunt, went to third on a single to short right by Lezcano and walked home on Bergman's long base hit to left center. There were many twists and turns in this one. The Marlins held early 4-0 and 5-1 leads. Arnie Torres homered for the Hurricanes to make it 5-3. Then the 'Canes scored eight runs in the 7th inning helped out by four Marlins' errors. The Marlins fought back with six in the 8th to tie it at 11 apiece. Key blows were RBI singles by Fernando Miranda and Jeff Schector, a two run double by Tom Amenita, a sac.fly by Pete David and a game tying solo blast by Eric Davis. The Marlins left the bases loaded in the tenth inning when veteran Jose Pena, who went all eleven, got two outs to end the threat. The Hurricanes had wasted an opportunity in regulation when they also left the bases loaded, but reliever Chipper Stout got out of that jam. Stout, though, took the loss when the Hurricanes staged their winning rally in the eleventh. The championship is the Hurricanes' first since joining the NABA Palm Beach League.
