Game Summary: Maplewood went 3-0 and had only let up 4 runs in their first 3 games of the Sandwich Tournament earning the top seed. Hopkinton was also undefeated and earned the second seed by letting up the second least amount of runs (14). In talking with the opposing coach staff before the start of the game, we found that Maplewood was not affiliated with Little League - they were an independent team which plays Pony ball - and were first in the Northeast this year! One more detail .. Maplewood had mercied every one of their opponents in Sandwich so far in the tournament! Hopkinton's bats had been on fire all weekend - with EVERYONE contributing - so they were up for the battle! Colin started with a walk, followed with a single by Wesley. Matt Bianchi added a 2 out single, but the bases were left loaded. In the bottom of the first, Matt West started pitching for the Hillers. He fought hard against the home run hitting Maplewood, facing 5 batters and giving up no runs. In the top of the second, the Hillers went down in order. Matt continued pitching great for Hopkinton, Maplewood was getting nervous, as he faced 5 more batters, struck out two, and keeping them scoreless once again. In the top of the third, Colin singled and was moved to second on Wesley fly ball to the firght field. EG singled and on a pass ball moved to second (while Colin moved to third). Matt West singled allowing Colin to score the first Hopkinton run. EG and Matt both scored on Matt Bianchi's at bat. Jake added a single, and Vinnie walked, but the bases were left loaded. Hopkinton was up 3-0 and Maplewood looked amazed! In the bottom of the third, Teddy continued his amazing defense at second base, getting the first out. The next batter got on base by error, and Maplewood's 3rd and 4th batters each got singles .. setting up for Maplewood's first home run of the game .. which happened to be a grand slam. Maplewood took the lead 4-3. Matt West stayed confident and continued pitching strong, striking out 2 of the next 3 batters to complete the inning. In the top of the fourth with two outs, Colin walked, setting up things for Wesley, who hit his final home run as a 12 year old and giving Hopkinton the lead 5-4!!!!! EG and Matt West added two singles, but were left stranded. In the bottom of the fourth, Hopkinton started to lose ground .. Maplewood's first batter got on with a walk, Teddy then made another play at second to get the first out. The next hitter hit a single. Matt West then helped himself by getting the out at third for the second out. Then Maplewood's home runs continued .. their number 3 and number 4 hitters had back to back home runs, giving them a lead of 8-5. Matt Bianchi came in to pitch and struck out the last Maplewood batter for the third out. Hopkinton was still in the game, but in the top of the 5th, they went down again in order, with help from some strong defense in the field. Hopkinton's defense weakened a bit, and Maplewood's offense got stronger. Maplewood was able to score 6 more runs on two singles, two doubles, a couple of walks and errors. Hopkinton found themselves down 14-5, but had not been mercied! In the top of the sixth, the boys came back fighting! Tyler started the inning with a single, Colin got on base (yes, for the fourth time this game) by balls. EG followed by a double off the fence, allowing Hopkinton to get two more runs. Hopkinton's offense was done. They put up 7 runs against the mighty Maplewood and did a tremendous job! The coaches of Maplewood complimented the Hillers' hitting and pitching! Hopkinton went into Sandwich not knowing what to expect - hoping to get through a couple of playoff games. But what ended up happening was that the team really gel'ed - with the help from a couple of great outings at the Bartek's (thanks to Peter and the Sullivans) - and the boys really played like a team. Everyone took a turn at contributing to a part of the Sandwich games. Congratulations for a great tournament!

Game Summary: Westwood faced three of Hopkinton's batters in the first inning. Matt West pitched for Hopkinton. The first two outs were made by Tyler Olson playing second base. With 2 men on base, Matt struck out the #5 batter to get the final out of the inning. Westwood kept Hopkinton from scoring again in the second, although McMillan drew a walk, and Jack Yaggy had a nice line drive into left. The bottom of the second inning started with West getting a strike out. The next batter got on base by error, and Westwood was able to score 4 runs off of 2 doubles and 3 walks. In the third inning, Doherty started with a walk, followed by Ericksen getting on base by being hit. Sullivan hit a single to shallow right, allowing Doyle (pinch runner for Doherty) to score. Olson then hit a double to center, allowing Ericksen to score. Matt West then had a HOME RUN allowing three more to score. Hopkinton took the lead 5-4. In the bottom of the third, West continued to pitch strong, striking out the first two batters, walking the next 2, and the final batter of the inning grounded out to first base. In the fourth, Hopkinton was able to add another run to make the score 6-4. In the bottom of the fourth, Bianchi came in to fact the third batter, and struck out the first batter he faced. Hopkinton then made two errors, and Westwood was able to tie the game. EG started the fifth with a walk, giving everyone hope, but Hopkinton was unable to add more runs to the board. In the bottom of the fifth, Bianchi continued to pitch for Hopkinton. The number one hitter got a double. The #2 hitter flew out to left field. Westwood's #3 (Burke-who was 2 for 2 with 2 walks) hit a home run, giving Westwood the lead 6-8. The next batter walked followed by a single, allowing another run to score. The next batter hit a double to left field. Doyle (in left) threw to the Olson (the cutoff at 2nd) who threw to the catcher who threw out the runner trying to score at home. Bianchi got the last out by strike out. Doyle led the sixth with a walk, but was left stranded on first. Hopkinton lost 6-9.
