Hustlers Split DH With Olney

Posted by Wayne Main at Jun 17, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Hustlers played host to the Olney Pirates on Wednesday evening and the result was more of the same when these two teams meet. The Pirates won game one 6-3 and the Hustlers took game two 12-5. Justin Ropp, Matt Cunningham and Andrew McElwain each had two hits in the opener. JT Sachar was 1-1 with two walks and two runs scored. The Hustlers leaned on the pitching of McElwain, Nick DeLisi and Cunningham in game two. McElwain and Tyler Prather doubled for the winners, while Sachar and Joe Pippin had key run scoring singles. Sachar, DeLisi, McElwain, Pippin and Ryan Bennett each scored two runs.

The Hustlers travel to Howard County on Sunday for a doubleheader with the HCYP Raiders.

Coming off a disappointing game where they were shut out, the Hustlers responded in grand fashion in Saturday's twinbill. Jared Struss connected for two home runs (one an opposite field blast) and two doubles, and Matt Cunningham homered and had two doubles to complement outstanding pitching and defense. The Hustlers beat the PG Select BlueSox 5-4 and the MD Warriors 11-6 behind strong outings from Marshall Mott, Justin Ropp, Cunningham and Nick DeLisi. The Hustler’s trademark defense was also on display with Joe Pippin running balls down in centerfield and Ropp and JT Sachar turning double plays in the middle of the diamond. The Hustlers recorded eleven hits in game two with Struss, Cunningham and Andrew McElwain each having two.

The Hustlers are back at it today (Wednesday, June 17) at Yellow Springs with a doubleheader against the talented Olney Pirates; first pitch is scheduled for 5:30pm.

HCYP’S Marcinko Too Good For Hustlers

Posted by Wayne Main at Jun 11, 2015 5:00PM PDT ( 0 Comments )

The Hustlers dropped a 3-0 game to HCYP on Wednesday evening at Yellow Springs. HCYP’s LHP Evan Marcinko was the story as he tossed four scoreless innings, holding the black and gold to three hits – one each by JT Sachar, Matt Cunningham and Dustin Isanogle. The Hustlers used six different pitchers and all were effective. The defense was also solid except in the third inning when HCYP scored three runs on two fielding miscues.

The Hustlers are back in action on Saturday at Yellow Springs for a round-robin with PG Select and the MD Warriors.  First pitch is slated for 11:00am.

The Hustlers went 3-1 and enjoyed a great weekend of baseball in the 4th Annual Battle at Gettysburg in Gettysburg, PA. The Hustlers won two ballgames in Saturday’s preliminary round - beating the Renegades Athletic Club 8-7 and the Keystone Bombers 12-9. Saturday’s play earned the Hustlers the #4 seed in the 14 team tournament championship round. The young Hustlers started Sunday’s play with an impressive 15-0 win over the Central PA Yetis (#5 seed). That set up a semi-final matchup with the talented #1 seeded GoWags War Eagles. The War Eagles prevailed by a score of 6-3 and went on to win the tournament championship. The War Eagles outscored their other four opponents by a combined score of 38-1, including an 8-0 win over the Southern MD Knights in the final game.

Marshall Mott started on the mound in the semi-final game and was most impressive for 2.2 innings. Unfortunately, Mott ran out of gas and surrendered four runs before the 3rd inning ended. Matt Cunningham came on in relief and pitched well.

Mott, Cunningham, Andrew McElwain, Tyler Prather and Justin Ropp all had strong outings on the mound over the weekend. McElwain (7-11, .636), Cunningham (5-9, .555) and Nick DeLisi (5-11, .455) led the Hustlers offensively. Cunningham and Jared Struss each homered.
