Freestyle Tournament Procedures

Posted by Amanda Medina on Mar 25 2014 at 05:00PM PDT

The following is the basic procedure for Freestyle Tournaments:

  1. Weigh ins are Friday evening 6:00 to 7"30 pm and Saturday morning 7:00 am to 8:00 am.  Wrestling begins at 9:00 am.  Dropping weight or severe dieting is not recommended.  However, it is advisable to wait to eat until after your wrestler has weighed in.  Depending on the number of wrestlers who attend the tournament, your wrestler can be pooled together with 5-10 pound differences.
  2. Before weigh ins you will find the registration area.  There you will find your division (see explanation below).  If it is your first tournament, you will need to fill out a registration card.   Name, Club, USA Wreslting Card Number and Date Of Birth are the main requirements on the card.  There is no need to provide your address, or phone number.  We are TEHACHAPI VALLEY WRESTLING CLUB.  Please be sure to spell it correctly and do not abreviate it.  This is where you will pay the Entrance Fee.  Entrance fees are $10.00 nper wrestler with the exceptions of the Coyote Classic and the Roadrunner Bash, which are $20.00.
  3. Take your registration card and proceed to the Weigh In Area.  Only wrestlers are allowed in this area.  Weigh in wearing only shorts or singlet.  Socks are also recommended!
  4. The tournament workers will perform the Hygeine Check.  They will check for skin rashes, long fingernails and other issues that may be harmful to fellow wrestlers.  Your wreslter will be asked to hold out their hands, then raise arms and turn around.  They will then write the weight on the arm.
  5. Your wrestler is now entered in the Tournament!
  6. Your wrestler will need to be in the gym by 8:30 am to warm up and stretch. There will be a short rule clinic at 9:00 am for coaches and wrestling will begin soon after.
  7. Wrestlers will be called to the Staging Area.  We start with Rookie and work towards the older kids.  They need to be ready to wrestle when reporting!  They will be paired with an opponent and handed a bout sheet.  From there, they will be sent to the gym and assigned at mat.  Make sure coach knows which mat you are assigned.  Only Coaches and parents with a floor pass will be allowed on the mats.  Make sure you have a water bottle and a towel.  When match is over, meet your wrestler and congratulate him or her on their great wrestling!  If your wrestler is hungry, now is the time to feed him/her.  It should be atleast 30 minutes before they are called to the staging area for another match.  It is also recommended to wipe off with disinfectant wipes at this time.
  8. Do not leave until you sure you are done wrestling for the DAY!  Generally, if you lose 2 matches you are done but it is possible you can get called for a third match.  Check with your coach!
  9. There will be bracket sheets posted at the beginning of the tournament.  Check it for correct Age, Division and Weight Class.  If there is a problem go to the Bout Room or find your coach.  This bracket will help you understand where your wrestler stands in the tournament.  If you are unfamiliar with how to read the bracket, ask, and we will explain it.
  10. We are here to help and to educate parents.  Most tournaments need help on tables or in the Bout Room.  If you are interested in learning more, please let us know!  For more information, visit the official USA Wrestling website at  WWW.themat.com.
