Dave's defeats Elmwood's 11-8 in 8 innings

Posted by David Sampson on Jun 23 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

In a game for the ages, Dave’s outlasts Elmwood 11-8 in 8 innings to force a winner take all championship game.

In a game for the ages, this one had it all; homeruns, great defense plays, lots of offense at times, and stellar pitching at others.  In the end it went 2 extra innings with Dave’s Market getting 2 runs on Timmy Lynch’s homerun to deep left field.  Dave’s added another insurance run when Ryan Gwaltney turned a 2-out walk into a run.

Dave’s jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning.  Consecutive hits by Brian Farrell, Vinny Thela, and Peter Webber loaded the bases for Mark Rogers.  Mark's double to deep left plated 2 runs.  Ryan Nabb had a sacrifice fly to score a 3rd run and then Mark barreled home on a passed ball to make it 4-0. In the top of the 3rd, Dave’s scored 2 more runs on a blast to center by Timmy Lynch which made the score 6-0.

After cruising through the first 2 innings, Ryan Gwaltney hit a rough spot in the bottom of the 3rd.  Elmwood strung together 3 hits to plate 2 runs.  Rick Cramer and Cam Moniz both had RBI hits in the inning.  Cam Moniz then held Dave’s scoreless in the 4th & 5th inning to keep his team in the game at 6-2.  In the bottom of the 4th inning, Elmwood struck for 3 more runs to make the game 6-5.  In that inning, after 3 consecutive singles, Travis Sampson had a big 2-run double and Kris Richards had a RBI hit.

Going into the top of the 6th, Dave’s led 6-5.  After 4 more hits in the top of the 6th, Dave’s had plated 2 more runs and led 8-5.  Peter Webber relieved Ryan Gwaltney in the 6th inning and had to face the meat of the Elmwood order.  2 well-placed hits and a walk helped Elmwood even up the score at 8-8 after regulation 6 regulation innings.

In the 7th inning, pitchers Peter Weber for Dave’s and Liam Darcy for Elmwood kept both teams at bay.  Going to the 8th, the score was still tied 8-8.  Up first for Dave’s was Matt Viens, who just missed hitting one of out of the park as the ball sailed foul down left field.  Liam retired Matt but Jimmy Moan followed with a hard-hit single.  Chris Guenev forced Jimmy at second for the 2nd out.  Timmy Lynch was up next and hit the clutch 2-out homerun.

Peter Weber came out in the bottom of the 8th for his 3rd inning of work.  And once again, the heart of the Elmwood order was up to bat.  Singles by Cam Moniz, Matt Gauthier, and Liam Darcy loaded the bases for Elmwood, but there were 2-out.  Peter battled Travis Sampson, but unlike earlier in the game, Dave’s pitching was able to win this one.  Peter got Travis to fly out to end the game with Dave’s winning 11-8.

Both teams will meet again tonight in a winner take all game.
