NC Times PREP SOFTBALL: Hynes' epic day leads to Torrey Pines sweep of doubleheader
Spearheaded by Lauren Hynes' perfect game in the first game and her 5-for-5 performance at the plate in the second, Torrey Pines swept a nonleague doubleheader at Canyon Crest Academy on Saturday, winning 13-0 and 18-3. Hynes (3-0) pitched her first career perfect game, striking out six batters over five perfect frames. The first game was called after five innings because of the 10-run rule. The Torrey Pines senior threw 51 of her 61 pitches for strikes to earn her third career no-hitter. In the second contest, Hynes reached base safety in all six plate appearances, finishing with a double, four runs scored, two RBIs and a pair of stolen bases. In both games combined, Hynes went 7-for-8 with a home run, a double, five RBIs, six runs, two walks and two steals. "It was quite an afternoon," Torrey Pines coach Jon Moore said. "I never have seen a girl have a day like this when you combine the perfect game with getting on-base nine times." Hynes, a Boston University commit, also pitched two scoreless innings of relief in the second game. The left-hander finished the doubleheader with 10 strikeouts over seven innings of two-hit ball. "She's the best all-around softball player I have ever coached," Moore said. In the doubleheader, Torrey Pines (16-0) outhit the Ravens (1-7) by a 31-7 margin. ---- Christopher Hadorn |
