Starting pitcher Cole Kaplan struck out 8 batters and Thomas Williams broke open a close game with a two-run double in the fourth inning to spark the Rockhounds to a first-round victory in the Minor B District 62 Tournament of Champions on Monday at Robinwood Little League.
Kaplan allowed only one hit in 2-2/3 innings with each of his outs coming via strikeouts.
The Rockhounds, Ocean View’s
postseason tournament champion, erupted for five runs in the fourth
inning, highlighted by Williams’ double to the gap in right-center
field. Chance DiMarco followed with a sharp single to left to bring in
two more runs. Kaplan lined a single to center field and Shane Hoodman
capped the outburst with a run-scoring single to increase the
Rockhounds’ lead to 8-2.
DiMarco, Williams and Hoodman provided 3-1/3 innings of solid relief.
Rockhounds catcher Eric Church
contributed a double and made the game’s pivotal defensive play in the
sixth by fielding a carom on a wild pitch and hustling back to tag out
an Angels’ runner trying to score.
Nick Chumacero reached base three
times, while David Drigla and Tyler La Force each got on base twice for
the Rockhounds (16-4-1 overall). Reilly Kells, Lisa Tobin and Kaleb
Plewa provided spirited at-bats as well for the Rockhounds.
