06/14/11  MAJORS:  OVLL Dodgers 6 vs. Costa Mesa National Vandals 3

The Dodger's second round TOC game versus the Costa Mesa National Vandals proved to be a tough one.  Hagen Danner started for the Dodgers on the mound and shut the Vandals down in the top of the first.  Brandon Nicholson led off the bottom of the inning with a sharp single and Jake Haffner stepped up with a 2-out line drive single to drive him in and put the Dodgers up 1-0.  In the top of the second, the Vandals first batter reached on an error but Danner struck out the next three to end the threat.  In the bottom of the second Noah Willis led off with a line drive single but was left on base with the next three batters striking out.  Jack Furry came in to pitch for the Dodgers in the third and walked the Vandals first batter who was able to steal second when the Dodgers failed to cover the base and took third on the missed throw.  Furry struck out the next two batters but the runner scored on a passed ball for an unearned run before he got the Number three hitter to fly out.  That was tough since the play at the plate was very close and could have gone either way.  To make matters worse, Danner injured his throwing hand on the play.  In the bottom of the inning, Danner reached with a 1-out walk and Furry smashed a ball by the shortstop to score Danner and put the Dodgers up 2-1.  Furry struck out the side in the 4th and it looked good for the Dodgers when Willis started our half of the inning by smacking another line drive single and taking second when the Vandals failed to cover the base.  Unfortunately we left Willis on base again.  This was compounded when we had some defensive trouble in the top of the 5th.  Furry walked the first batter and then gave up the Vandals only hit of the game which gave them runners on first and third with no outs.  The Vandals attempted to steal second and Danner threw a bullet to get the runner who somehow got tangled up with Willis who was covering.  Willis tagged the runner and then threw home but the throw was a bit off and the run scored to tie the game.  That's when things got a little crazy as the field umpire apparently did not see the tag at second and the runner proceeded to take third and attempt to score on the play.  Fortunately Danner recovered quickly and the runner was tagged out at home.  The next two batters reached on two consective throwing errors off of easy groundballs.  The Vandals were able to score another run on another close call at the plate on a fielder's choice back to the pitcher when it appeared that Furry tagged out the runner.  The safe call put the Vandals up 3-2.  Fortunately the Dodgers maintained their composure and Furry got the next two hitters to pop up and ground out to end the threat.  In the bottom of the inning the Dodgers were fired up and ready to fight back.  Nicholson started the inning by getting hit by a pitch and then took second on a wild pitch.  Danner promptly drove him in with a triple down the line and then scored on a wild pitch.  Furry followed with a walk and took second as the pitcher took the throw back from the catcher but, unfortunately, the field umpire made him go back to first because a player came on the field to retrieve his bat during the play.  The boys were pretty frustrated and Haffner followed that with a single to advance Jack to third and then Nick Welch banged a line drive to right field to score Furry.  Ethan Iles followed Nick with a 1-out line drive to drive in Haffner and give the Dodgers a 6-3 lead.  Furry struck out the side in the top of the 6th on 10 pitches to end the game.
