The Bulldogs opened the 2013 season against a team they eliminated in last years playoffs but in a well played contest it was Wakefield that prevailed 3-2 under the lights at Endicott College.
Veteran Merchant hurler Jarod Marchesi struck out seven batters and allowed no walks while having 1-2-3 innings in five of his seven innings. Bulldog newcomer Zac Levine had control problems in the second inning which was his eventual undoing but finished strong retiring fourteen of the last sixteen batters.
A sacrifice fly by Josh Band had given Wakefield a 3-0 lead in the second inning. The Bulldogs lone threat came in the fourth when Colin Sitarz hit a two run double to the far reaches of North Field but the ball clanged off the fence in his bid to tie the game with one swing. Marchesi then retired the last ten batters of the game to seal the league opener for Wakefield
