Royals Head into Break with Exciting Win

Posted by Mike Milligan on Apr 06 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

The Royals head into Spring Break with a 2-1 come from behind wind in brutually cold April weather at Fleet Park.  The Royals scored in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score before scoring the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth.

In the fifth, Sam Beasley led off with a walk.  He eventually stole home on a straight steal with two outs.

In the sixth, Hayden Gerloff led off the inning with a walk.  After a hit by Ned Darden and an intentional walk to Zach Milligan to load the bases, Gerloff scored when Stephen Davis hit a perfectly placed ball between first and second base to score the winning run.  We are learning as a team that good things happen when we swing the bat and put the ball in play.

The Royals got another great pitching performance and several outstanding defensive plays.  Stephen Davis started and went two innings striking out two giving up one hit and one run.  He was added by stellar defense by Ned Darden at second, Ryan Ludvik at short and Sam Houle at first base.   The Red Sox lone run came on a wild pitch in the second inning.   The second inning ended with a great catch in centerfield by Dante Venvertohl, who provided a textbook effort in drop stepping on a fly ball and catching it with two hands on a well hit ball in the left-centerfield gap.

Zach Milligan pitched the final four innings striking out 11 and walking one while giving up one base hit.  Ryan and Ned came close to turning a 6-4-3 double play in the fifth inning on a slow hit ball to shortstop.  Sam Beasley did an excellent job behind the plate over the last four innings making several great block behind the plate on balls in the dirt.

In addition to the scoring effort above, Brett Schulwolf, Ned Darden and Stephen Davis had great hits in the first, third and fourth innings, respectively.

This was a great game to see and be apart of, especially because it only took about an hour and ten minutes.  Great game Royals.

The Royals will return to game action on Tuesday, March 21 vs. the Mets at 6pm at Fleet Park.
