Marcus Pitches, Hits Cubs to 2-1 Victory

Posted by Billy Daniel on May 04 2007 at 05:00PM PDT
Despite another re-occurrence of "Missing Bat" syndrome, the Cubs defeated the Orioles in a nail biter today at Fleet Park 2-1. Story of the game: Marcus pitched a complete game victory and just for fun, had the game-winning RBI in the bottom of the 6th inning. Cubs bats again took the day off, tallying only 3 hits, two singles by Cabell and Marcus' walk-off double. But that enough as Marcus threw a 1 hitter, with 10 strikeouts and only 3 walks. Scoring Summary...Vince got on in the 2nd and a few passed balls later, was on third. A groundball to second by Anthony drove him home and the Cubs were up 1-0. The Orioles scored on a very close play at the plate in the 4th when the umpire called the runner safe after a great throw in by Vince and a equally good relay to the plate by Marcus. Not surprisingly, those on the Cubs' bandwagon disagreed with the call. Then, in the 6th, with 1 out, Cabell got on first, took 2nd on a passed ball and Marcus delievered a high shot to left center that dropped in. Cabell scooted home and the Cubs had their 10th victory of the year. Defensively, we saw a great Willy Mays style basketcatch by George in RF in the 4th and several groundouts that our infielders handled well. Next game is this Wednesday against the Tigers.
