Yankees Drop Heartbreaker to Braves

Posted by Jim Morrison on Apr 29 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

Three untimely errors and a lack of clutch hitting added up to a tough 4-3 loss for the Yankees against the Braves on Saturday afternoon. The Yankees got runners to third base in four innings, but could not score them.

Alec Tekamp opened the bottom of the first inning with a walk, then scored on Cabell Thomas's shot to left-center field. After two outs, Marshall Carney shot a hard ground ball through the right side to score Cabell for a 2-0 Yankees lead.

But the Braves came back with three in the top of the second inning with three unearned runs on a walk, a single and an error. They added another run in the second on a double by Spencer Matthews, one of only three hits surrendered by Jason Martinez, who struke out seven.

The Yankees drew close with a run in the bottom of the fourth when Marshall flew a hit to rightfield, advanced on a walk and later scored.  Zach Tekamp got aboard on a single in the fifth, but was stranded at third base.  Gray Kiger singled in the sixth, but was also stranded.

Gray made a key play in the second inning, gunning down a Braves' runner at home plate by ten feet with a throw from left as Marshall made the tag.
