Late Rally Falls Short, Yankees Drop One to Sox

Posted by Jim Morrison on May 10 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

A furious sixth inning rally fell short Friday as the Yankees dropped a game to the Red Sox 10-7. The Sox shortstop deftly fielded Ryan Dixon's hard-hit grounder in the hole and stepped on third with the bases loaded to send the Yanks to defeat.

The rally began with the home team trailing 10-3. Cabell Thomas walked before Jason Martinez and Marshall Carney each grounded out to the pitcher. But the Bombers didn't give in easily. Gray Kiger was hit by a pitch and went to second on a passed ball before Ann Burns Morrison walked for the second time in the game. Danny DeSmit singled to center to plate a run, then Jessie Kane walked and Alex Tracey walked to score a run. Jack Broach walked to plate another before the game ended on Ryan's ground ball.

The Yanks scored one in the second inning when Jason walked then came around on a passed ball when Ann Burns walked. They added two in the third inning on a double by Ryan, a walk to Cabell, and a hard single up the middle by Jason.

Gray Kiger started the game, striking out four and surrendering three hits. Ann Burns also struck out four and gave up three hits. Cabell finished with two strong scoreless innings, striking out five and allowing one hit.

On offense, Jessie Kane's rocket shot down the leftfield line for a double was among the night's highlights.
