Yankees' Bats Come Alive, Zach pitches 2-hitter

Posted by Jim Morrison on Apr 22 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

With timely hitting, aggressive base running, and clutch pitching, the Yankees defeated the Tigers 16-6 in four innings Wednesday. Zach Tekamp threw three innings, striking out five, and surrendering only two weak hits while Gray Kiger came on in the fourth inning to finish strongly.

Alec Tekamp set the table, opening the game with a double to right centerfield. After a walk to Zach Tekamp and a pop up, Jason Martinez lofted a ball to center, scoring a run. Zach scored the second run of the first on a grounder.

In the second inning, Ann Burns Morrison led off with a walk, then went to third on Jack Broach's double down the leftfield line. She scored on Jessie Kane's ground out to first base.  Alex Tracey got aboard on an error by the second baseman, scoring Jack. Alec singled to right before Cabell Thomas doubled to center, plating a pair. Cabell scored when Jason Martinez reached on an error, giving the Yanks a 7-1 lead after two.

In the third, the barrage increased as the Yankees scored nine times. Ryan Dixon grounded a single off the first base bag, then hustled all the way around the bases when the Tigers threw the ball into leftfield.  Gray Kiger walked, then was forced at second base on Danny DeSmit's ground ball. Ann Burns Morrison walked before she and Danny scored on Jack Broach's double to leftfield. Alex singled to right then scored on Alec Tekamp's double to center. Alec raced home on Zach's hit to center. The merry go-round continued when Cabell Thomas tripled to center, driving home another run. He scored when Jason reached on an error. Jason completed the scoring on Ryan's ground ball single.

In the field, Marshall Carney threw out the first runner attempting to steal in the first inning, effectively shutting down the Tigers running game. Alec and Ann Burns made two hustle plays. Playing shortstop, Alec backed up third base on a steal, stopping a ball from going into leftfield and saving a run. Playing second base, Ann Burns backed up Jason on a ground ball that eluded him and made the quick toss for an out.
