Red Sox Close Out Regular Season

Posted by Doug Richter on May 30 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

The Red Sox had the chance to play the role of the "spoiler" again on the final day of the regular season as they played the Yankees.  How fitting to close out the regular season in a Red Sox vs Yankees contest.....and there was just as much excitement surrounding this game as there is in the Major Leagues!  Earlier in the season, the Yankees defeated the Sox by a score of 7-6 in a game that ended early as the time-limit expired.  So a chance to get even was on the mind of every player in Red on this day.

The early innings belonged to the Red Sox.  We jumped out to an early lead in our first at-bat on the strength of hits by Spencer, Jake and Connor, then the Yankees made some spectacular plays and got out of the inning, leaving Connor stranded on third, but after two innings, it was 2-1 in favor of the Red Sox.

The Sox struggled through the middle innings and and fell behind 6-2 as the Yankees hit the ball extremely well.  Defensively, the Sox played well, but the Yankee hits were hitting the holes as if they were running away from our gloves.

These Sox never gave up, and in the final inning, they put together a Rally that came up just a bit short, and the Yankees prevailed 8-5.  On the strength of a great season and two wins over the Red Sox, the Yankees finished the season with just one loss, thus capturing the Regular Season title of "First Place".

The Red Sox had nothing to hang their heads about, as they finished 9-4 on the season and in Third Place, thus qualifying for the Championship bracket of the tournament.  Over the next two weeks, the Red Sox will face the Athletics, the Yankees and the Nationals once again and hopefully will play well enough to get into the Championship game on Saturday, June 13.  The impressive record of the regualr season is gone, and everybody starts fresh with a record of 0-0.  Let's cheer on the Sox!

GO RED SOX!!!!

Next up:  Wednesday, June 3 vs the Athletics at 6:00pm
