Swim for Food Competition Details

Posted by Antone Balbo on Jul 19 2009 at 05:00PM PDT

Attached is the text of an e-mail I received from the person coordinating this year's Swim-For-Food drive. I am not completely sure how Joe and Kelly will decide to manage the effort this year, but I am attaching what I have (including an unofficial attachment) to help spread the word. Follow the link to see the Swim-For-Food website.

Dear Div 1 Parents and Coaches:
I just wanted to touch base to let you know where I am with planning this event. First though, thank you again for agreeing to participate! We have run three Swim For Food events this summer already.  We have collected over 2900 lbs of food so far, well on our way to our goal of 10,000 lbs this year.
  • I've attached a flyer here for you to email/distribute/post for your swim families. It should print on one page- but sometimes it does not, for some reason on some printers, so might need some local adjusting--thanks.
  • We will run this at Divisionals at the four locations. Div 1 is at East Hanover on July 27th. Last year, these five teams collected 970 lbs of food! I hope we can even exceed this :)
  • Food collection will be run as a friendly competition among the teams. Small trophies/plaques provided to all teams.
  • Some teams prefer to place a container out at the pool during the week(s) leading up to the event. This is great because it gives the swimmers a chance to donate beforehand and not forget on the day. We have little tubs that say Swim for Food on it and I can drop one at your pool if you'd like, but a box works fine as well. Let me know if you'd like me to drop off a tub but if you would like this food to count towards your total, please bring to the meet that day, or email me by the 24th and I can come pick up. Note that if you do not want to collect the week before, please amend the attached flyer.
  • When swimmers arrive, they will put their food into a tub labeled for their team. I will provide these at the meet... One parent is needed to help direct your swimmers to their container/area and to pack up and weigh your team's food. S/he should be finished before meet start so we can announce how much we collected. If you are not the parent who will help pack up the food before the meet, could you please let me have the contact info of this person-so I can give them some last minute information? One person from each team makes this go much, much faster :)
  • We will donate to a local Food Pantry.  I have a couple of options in the works, but want to be sure they can come to pick up at the pool. I have put the typical suggested preferences on the flyer. Swimmers do not have to purchase these items, but some families prefer some guidance. I will let you know which pantry in the next day or so.
  • Do you have an objection to putting out a money jar by each pool's food container so if someone forgets their food, they can put in cash and we will count $2=1 pound of food? This has worked really well at the events so far this year. Again, the team helper parent, can help direct their arriving swimmers where to donate their food, or suggest that they can donate cash if they forgot. The cash is being split--50% goes to the food pantry in the form of Shop Rite cash cards that they can give to the families to spend. The other 50% is being accumulated from all the Swim For Food events and we are looking at donating to an organization that connects local farmers with food pantries/soup kitchens. More info to follow.

Thank you very much for your help in supporting this event. The Food Pantries in NJ are so low now and are so appreciative of our swimmers' help! Please email me back so I know you are OK with all this and if possible, pls include name of helper parent for the meet.
