Malden, MA- Chris Mitchell went five innings to grab the win, and Shawn Smeglin retired the last six batters of the game in a row to get the save, when the Melrose Americans knocked off the Chiefs 4-1 at Maplewood on Monday night.

Mitchell, who bumped his record to 2-0, and Chiefs’ starter Tim Dunphy, matched zeros over the first two innings.

The Americans took a 3-0 lead in the top of third and never looked back. Doubles from Charlie Huegi and Casey Santos Ocampo, an infield error, and a sacrifice fly from Will Shackelford, accounted for the trio of runs.

After a scoreless fourth, Melrose increased their lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth off reliever Mike Gedman. The visitors used a couple of walks, a wild pitch, and a single from John Jennings to pick up the run.

The Chiefs got their only run of the night in the bottom of the fifth when Tony Serino, who had two of the Chiefs five hits, drove in Nate Witkowski who had singled.

David Kerns of Bridgewater State made his ICL debut and worked a scoreless sixth. Boston College righty Austin Batchelor tossed a 1-2-3 seventh, with two K’s, for the Chiefs.
