Ellis "Grounds" Gately A's, 5-3

Posted by Chiefs Baseball on Jul 13 2008 at 05:00PM PDT in 2010 Season

Medford, MA- Southpaw Dylan Ellis of Merrimack College got 18 of the 21 outs via the ground ball as the Chiefs beat the Gately A's 5-3 on Monday evening at Tufts University.

The Chiefs infield was flawless as SS Brendan Pyburn (3 putouts, 5 assists), 2B Mike Barbati (2 putouts, 6 assists), 3B Mike Andre (5 assists) and 1B Paul Koslowski (15 putouts) backed Ellis' 81 pitch, complete game effort. The Chiefs infield quartet also turned two double plays. Ellis was the first Chiefs pitcher to throw a complete game without recording a strikeout since Ari Koufos turned the trick in a route going win over the Melrose Rams in 1992.

The Chiefs took a 1-0 lead in the second inning off A's starter Brett Manley on walks to Justin Crisafulli and Andre, a single by Andrew Hanson and a sacrifice fly from Nick Dunn.

The A's tied the game in the fourth on a single from Ricky Salvia and a long double to left by John D'Angelo.

The Chiefs took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on consecutive singles by Koslowski and Crisafulli and another walk to Andre, which loaded the bases. Hanson followed with a hard hit liner to left that D'Angelo got a glove on but was eventually scored as a two base error, allowing Koslowski and Crisafulli to score.

Walks to Matt Boleski and Pyburn, a sacrifice bunt by Barbati, a walk to Koslowski, a Crisafulli RBI single and a bases loaded walk to Lawlor, upped the lead to 5-1 in the sixth.

The A's made things a little interesting in the top of the seventh when singles from D'Angelo and Bumpus preceded a long two RBI triple to rightcenter by Peter Copa that cut the lead to 5-3. Ellis ended the game when he got catcher Corey Ketterer to ground to Barbati.

With the win the Chiefs improve to 10-6-5 heading into a date with the Testa Corp. Bombers at East Boston Stadium on Tuesday night at 8:00 PM.
