Week One Round Up

Healy Oil 15 - Mario’s Restaurant 8 Healy Oil played a slick game against Mario’s restaurant, serving up a 15-8 loss in the season opener on Wednesday night. Mario’s started strong, as John Geary led off with a home run. Ragu Mantena, Thanh Nguyen and Dave Batchelder also homered for Mario’s. Mantena’s three-run shot was the first of his career. Mario’s lead was short-lived as Healy went up 6-2 and then 12-4, before a late Mario’s rally plated four runs in the seventh inning. Rick Waldron turned in a nice defensive effort at third base for Mario’s.

Drew Farms 18 - Pro Sports Therapy 12 Drew Farms put up nine runs in the fourth inning to break open a close game. Drew Farm’s defense was perfect, and every player delivered at least one hit. Todd Shepherd (2), Jim Sullivan (2), Tom Menicci, Dave Guthrie, Scott Cole, and Gary Lavelle hit home runs for the winners. Don Barnas pitched a complete game and newcomer Eric Carlyle notched the first hit of his career. Pro Sports Dave Chirokas did his best to keep his squad in the game, hitting a career best three home runs. Steve Nolan made a big splash in his Westford Over 30 Softball debut by recording three hits and making a couple of standout plays on defense.

Mustangs 22 - Shortcuts 9 Mustangs exceeded the six home run limit in 22-9 win over Shortcuts that only took five innings to play on Friday night. Craig Smith and Don Cusano each hit two home runs for Mustangs, Jay Dolan added one, and Jay Lincoln socked a grand slam. The Mustangs squelched a few potential rallies with a great catch by Jack Erickson at the fence and a key double play by infielders Paul Selfridge, Paul Liguori, and Brian Foley.

Floral Arts 22 - Willis Tent 3 Floral Arts applied constant pressure in a 22-3 win over Willis Tent on Friday night. Mike Alonardo (3-3 2 HR, 6 RBI) led the balanced attack, with Roger Whittlesey, Jim Peloquin, Tom Semeter, and Simon Tripp each chipping in a home run. Larry Mardany limited the Willis attack, giving up a solo home run to Kevin Adolf, and a two-run shot to Jeff Briggs. Frank Lancelotta, Larry Mardany, and Mark LeFebvre each hit a double and scored multiple runs for Floral Arts.

Willis Tent 26 - Shortcut 12 Willis Tent bounced back from a loss in its season opener by defeating Shortcut, 26-12. Both teams hit more than six home runs in the five-inning contest.

Mustangs 23 - Floral Arts 9 The Mustangs were solid up and down their lineup and played excellent defense in their five-inning destruction of Floral Arts. Bill Knute led the way for the offense, hitting two home runs and chipping in four RBI. Don Cusano, Mark Cusano, Paul Selfridge and Jack Erickson also hit the long ball for Mustangs. Floral Arts got offense contribution from Jonathan Morgan and Frank Lancelotta, but were sloppy in the field, leading to two double-digit innings for Mustangs.
