Ice Wolves Lose OT Heartbreaker

Posted by Dave Pulaski on Jan 09 2010 at 04:00PM PST
Strongsville, Ohio - The Ice Wolves dropped a 4-3 overtime game to the North Royalton Bears on Saturday night. Fremont led 3-1 early in the second period but that was all the scoring there would be for the Ice Wolves who did pick up one point in the standings for the regulation tie.

After a quick power play goal by North Royalton an unusual play developed. With 10:36 left in the first period two North Royalton players took simultaneous minor penalties giving the Ice Wolves a two minute 5 on 3 advantage. Taking a play from the Boston University playbook, after winning the faceoff deep in the Bears end, Luke Edgar was pulled from goal for the 6 on 3 man advantage. The strategy nearly cost the Ice Wolves a goal as one North Royalton clearing attempt slid inches away from the empty net. But the Ice Wolves regrouped and with just 9 seconds left on the penalties, Alex Swope found the back of the net to tie the game at one each. Jordan Lones assisted on the goal.

Early in the second period, Joe Pulaski put the Ice Wolves up with a goal assisted by Swope and Matt Pulaski. Then a few minutes later Swope got his second goal set up nicely by Garrett Binger and Chris Carpenter for the 3-1 lead.

The momentum was stymied when the Bears scored with 7:28 left in the second period to make it a 3-2 game. The score remained that way until North Royalton scored with just under 3 minutes left in the contest.

The overtime winner came on the power play for the Bears. Luke Edgar stopped 27 of 31 North Royalton shots on goal. The Ice Wolves managed 24 shots in the contest.
