Midget Cards take OBA title

(story from St. Thomas Time-Journal - Rob Ross)

A strong outing all year long in league play served the St. Thomas Optimist Midget Cardinals well when they captured the Ontario Baseball Association midget B championship for the second straight year over the weekend. Yobi Ramirez pitched a one-hitter and allowed two walks in the final game for St. Thomas as they defeated Dundas 7-1. Coach Paul Stafford said the team lost only five games this season, all by one run and all in tournaments to elite AAA teams. St. Thomas finished first in London and District Baseball Association play. "We hang in there with the AAA teams, " he said. St. Thomas started strong with an 11-1 in the first game against Kendal. In the second game, St. Thomas edged Kincardine 3-2 and pulled off another one-run win in its third game, 6-5 against Dundas. As fate would have have it, Dundas and St. Thomas matched up again in the final. Stafford credited his pitching strength with the finishing power the team needed to take the championship. "When you get into a tournament and start playing four games, most teams don't have the pitching depth and we have that." Players on the team are between 16 and 18 years old. Three are off to U.S. college teams.  Dylan Little will attend Niagara County Community College while both Mitch Roy and Mike Daniels will be at Genesee Community College in New York this fall.
