On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, the Northside College Prep Sophomore-Freshman Boys Track & Field Team traveled to Ted Haydon Stadium at the University of Chicago for the first Outdoor Track & Field meet of the season. The 3rd Annual Sophomore-Freshman Urban Prep Relays Meet is organized by Urban Prep Head Boys Track & Field Coach Derrick Brooms. Urban Prep recently won the Chicago Public League Indoor Track & Field Title, and broke two school records at Urban Prep Relays.

Derrick Brooms is a University of Chicago Alumni, and a member of the University of Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame. Derrick Brooms was the 1996 Amos Alonzo Stagg Medal receipient, and was a two-time UAA Sprint Champion in indoor and outdoor Track & Field. He was also an NCAA All-American, and two time UAA Player of the year as a wide receiver and kick-off returner for the Maroons from 1992-1995. In 1995, Derrick Brooms led the nation with a 35.2 yard kickoff return average as he helped lead Chicago to an 8-2 record. Many athletes that played against him, have said that Brooms was so fast that he could not be tackled, and literaly controlled the outcome of a game. In the winter of 2009, Derrick Brooms was the guest of honor of a Northside sprint coaching staff meeting.

On Wednesday, Brooms returned to the University of Chicago to host the best Sophomore-Freshman Relay Meet in Chicago. The meet featured host Urban Prep, Northside College Prep, St. Rita, Perspectives-Calumet, Gordon Tech, Leo, and Urban Prep East Garfield. Urban Prep East Garfield features former Northside sprints coach legend Kwaku Attoh. Kwaku Attoh began teaching Physical Education at Urban Prep East Garfield in August 2009. Urban Prep East Garfield is all Freshman (120 students), and they were very impressive in the meet, and will be coming to the Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic on April 24, 2010.

The Urban Prep Relays had non-stop action, and a unique relay format, in which every event, including field events were scored as a Relay. The total distance jumped or thrown by a Team (Top 2 athletes) determined the winner of each field event. The total time ran by a Team (Top 2 athletes) determined the winner of the distance events (3200m run and Mile). The athletes also had the priviledge of running on the nicest Outdoor Track in Chicago. The University of Chicago's Outdoor Track at Ted Haydon Stadium is the best outdoor track in Chicago.

Medals were awarded to the top 3 Relays in each event, and Ribbons were awarded for fourth through fifth place. The Point scale for all events was 10-8-6-4-2-1. Every point scored was vital to the outcome of the meet.

The difference between winning and losing the Urban Prep Relays Title was only 3 points. Every point scored is vital to the success of the TEAM. Inches and tenths make a Champion!

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, the Northside College Prep Sophomore-Freshman Boys traveled to Bensenville, Illinois to take on Buffalo Grove, Fenton, Lake Park, Niles North, St.Joseph, West Chicago, and Brooks College Prep in the 32nd Annual Emil Ostberg Sophomore-Freshman Indoor Championships. It is the most competitive Sophomore-Freshman Indoor Meet in Illinois.

The Emil Ostberg Sophomore-Freshman Indoor Championships is named after three former Fenton athletes, who earned All-American honors during their collegiate careers. Jim Nichols (All-American in the 800m run), Emil Ostberg (All-American in the 200m Dash), Art Seimers (All-American in the Mile, and brother of Fenton legend Chris Seimers). To earn All-American honors, a collegiate athlete has to place in the Top 8 in their event at the NCAA National Track & Field Championships. At the Emil Ostberg Championships, Plaques were awarded to the Top 5 individual finishers and the Top 4 Relays in every event. Individual Events and Relays were scored 10-8-6-4-2-1.

Prior to Tuesday, Northside Junior Charlie Mesimore was the only Northside athlete in school history to win an individual event at the Ostberg Sophomore-Freshman Championships (3200m run Champion, 2008 and 2009, Art Seimers Mile Champion, 2009).

In 2009, Northside Sophomore Josh Williams earned a plaque in the Triple Jump by placing fifth overall, which is an incredible accomplishment for a Freshman Athlete. As a Freshman, Josh Williams did not score a point in the Long jump at the Ostberg Sophomore-Freshman Championships, and was not even the Mustangs top freshman in the Long Jump, despite an outstanding jump of 15'9 at the Ostberg Championships his freshman year.

In 2010, through pure hard work, Josh Williams has continued to improve every meet, and has become one of the best jumpers on the Northside Varsity Team.

On Tuesday, March 23, 2010, Josh Williams received his first reward of the season, and made history by becoming the Northside Mustangs first Emil Ostberg Long Jump Champion with a PERSONAL BEST jump of 18'7.75!!! On his first jump, Josh Williams jumped 18'4. On his second jump, Josh Williams jumped 18'1. On his third jump, Josh Williams jumped 18'7.75. On his fourth jump, Josh Williams made a legendary jump, but hit the foul line with his toe. As a courtesty, Fenton High School measured it at 20'0. Although the jump did not count because of the foul, it was still an incredible jump. In one year, Josh Williams went from not even scoring a point in the Long Jump at the Ostberg Championships to 2010 Emil Ostberg Long Jump Champion!!! Josh Williams is one of the most improved athletes on the Team, and has the potential to break the Mustangs school record in the Long Jump as a Sophomore! Northside Sophomore Derek Lin, also made history, by earning four Plaques in the meet! Derek Lin earned his first plaque of the day in the Long Jump by placing 5th overall with a PERSONAL BEST jump of 17'6.75! On his first jump, Derek Lin jumped 17'6.50. On his second jump, Derek Lin jumped 17'6.65. On his third jump, Derek Lin jumped 17'3. On his fourth jump, Derek Lin jumped 16'8. It was the beginning of a historic day, for Derek Lin, as he came home from the meet, earning a record four plaques!!!

In the Triple Jump, Northside Sophomore Josh Williams placed third overall with a PERSONAL BEST jump of 37'5.5. Northside Sophomore Derek Lin placed fourth overall with a PERSONAL BEST jump of 37'0.0. Josh Williams and Derek Lin were both awarded plaques for placing third and fourth respectively.

In the High Jump, Northside Sophomore Josh Williams placed fourth overall with a jump of 5'2. Josh Williams was awarded a plaque for placing fourth overall.

In the 50 Yard High Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Derek Lin ran a time of 8.3 to advance to the FINALS! Northside Sophomore Luis Mesa ran a time of 9.12 to also advance to the FINALS! In the Finals, Derek Lin placed third overall with an outstanding time of 8.3. Derek Lin was awarded a plaque for placing third overall. Luis Mesa placed fifth overall with a time of 10.4. Luis Mesa was awarded a plaque for placing fifth overall.

In the 50 Yard Dash, Northside Sophomore Jusuf Skelic tied his PR with an outstanding time of 6.45. Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese ran a time of 6.12 to advance to the FINALS! In the Finals, Nathaniel Agharese placed fifth overall with an outstanding time of 6.17. In the Finals, Derek Lin placed second overall with a personal best time of 7.7. Derek Lin was awarded a plaque for placing second overall!

In the 220 Yard Dash, Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese stumbled on the second curve, and ran a time of 27.9. Nathaniel Agharese still came home from the meet with a plaque in the 50 Yard Dash!

On Sunday, March 21, 2010, the Northside Varsity Mens All Star Track & Field Team traveled to Henry Crown Field House in Chicago, Illinois for the 2010 Indoor City Championships. Team Trophies were awarded to the Top two teams, and Medals were awarded to the Top 6 Individuals in each event.

Henry Crown Stadium features an athlete friendly atmosphere, upper deck seating, 200m Indoor Track and has been the host to numerous National meets, and local Championship meets as well. The Varsity letter was invented in the 1890s by Amos Alonzo Stagg as he was sitting on the entrance steps to Henry Crown Field house. The main wall of the stadium constains a list of field house records, which include several Olympians. The first Heisman Trophy winner (1935), Hay Berwanger is still listed on the all-time list for Henry Crown for the 55m Dash. Henry Crown Field house is a Chicago landmark that is rich in Track & Field history.

A special thanks to CPS Track & Field coordinator Thomas Smith for hosting an outstanding meet, and for providing a great Track & Field experience for all of the athletes and spectators.

This meet had the finest officiating crew in the State of Illinois, thanks to IHSA Official Richard Dust, and University of St.Francis Head Track Coach Drew Ludtke. Drew Ludtke had every member of his collegiate Team, study and take the certication exam to become a certified IHSA Official to help officiate the 2010 CPS Indoor Championship meet. Their efforts made it the best run meet in Illinois. In the past, members of various Chicago Public League coaching staffs had to officiate and coach the meet at the same time. The 2010 Indoor City Championships was the first time that the CPS Championship Indoor Meet had triple the officials needed to officiate a high school track meet, and no additional help was needed for the meet.

Prior to his outstanding collegiate coaching career, Drew Ludtke was an incredible collegiate athlete, and walked-on the 1998 LSSU Nationally ranked Cross Country Team (ranked 21st Nationally), and also placed in the top six in the 800m run. In addition to Cross Country, and Track, Ludtke was also a member of the LSSU Basketball Team.  He was coached at LSSU in Track and Cross Country by D.J. Baars, who is a former collegiate teammate of Northside College Prep Head Coach Jon Gordon at Northern Michigan University in 1990. Drew Ludtke has been involved in competitive running since 1983, and both of his parents were Cross Country and Track coaches. It was great to see him at the meet on Sunday, and his athletes did an outstanding job officiating the 2010 CPS Indoor Championships.

A special thanks also to Northside Volunteer assistant Coach Jose Nebrida for handing out all of the Medals to the CPS Athletes, and enhancing the awards ceremonies.

A special thanks also to Northside Alumni Eric Nelson for traveling all the way to Chicago to cheer on the Mustangs at the 2010 Indoor City Championships.

Last, a meet with 46 teams, doesn't happen without all the CPS coaches briniging their respective Teams to the meet. Several Teams ran in a meet on Saturday, and still came to the meet on Sunday to make this meet happen. The above athletes have ALL earned a Varsity letter this season! On two occassions, Northside has lost a meet by a single point this season. Every point scored is vital to the success of the TEAM. Inches and Tenths make a Champion!

On Satuday evening, March 20, 2010, the CPS Sports Administration released the seeds for ALL events for the 2010 Indoor City Championships, which will take place on Sunday, March 21, 2010.

The CPS Indoor City Championships is designed to determine a Champion, and there is an emphasis on competition as opposed to participation. All Teams enter their best athletes, and only get one entry per event per school.

There is a record number of entries this year, almost ten times the number of entries, compared to last year. This will be one of the largest Indoor City Championship meets in the history of Chicago.

Kenwood Academy is the favorite to win the Team Title. Kenwood Academy is the only Team that is seeded to score in almost every event.

The top mark in High Jump also belongs to Kenwood Academy's Brock Massie with a season best jump of 5'10. Northside Senior Hunter Speese is seeded second in the high jump competition with a season best jump of 5'8. Speese will have extra inspiration on Sunday.

Northside Alumni legend Eric Nelson has traveled all the way to Chicago to cheer on the TEAM on Sunday. Each day, when Northside athletes exit the locker room to head to Track practice, they pass by the Eric Nelson section of the School Trophy case. The trophy case contains Eric Nelson autographed Nike Throwing shoes, that he used to set his last school record in the Discus. The trophy case also contains photos of Eric Nelson breaking various meet records, school records, winning multiple city titles (2007-2009), and includes photos of Eric Nelson at Illinois Prep Top Times (2008 and 2009) and the IHSA State Championships (2008 and 2009).

Eric Nelson, among other honors, won four consecutive MVP Awards in Track & Field, at Northside College Prep from 2006-2009, and the Mustangs home meet, the Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic (April 24, 2010) is named after him.

Northside athletes always throw farther, jump higher, and run faster in his presence, and Eric Nelson will be at Henry Crown Field house on Sunday to help cheer on his former teammates.

Northside Hurdle school record holder, Hersh Perlmutter, is ranked among the top seeds in the 55m Hurdles along with Harper's Kalen Northern, Kenwood Academy's Keith Ross, and Urban Prep's Jamil Boldian.

Northside Captain Wesley Laytham, is ranked among the top seeds in the 800m run, along with Kenwood Academy's Omar Tall, and Lake View's Eduardo Chavez.

Northside Captain Cooper Eben, is ranked among the top seeds in the 1600m run, along with Payton's Jose Mora, Lake View's Oscar Medina, and Jones College Prep Freshman phenom Jamison Dale.

Northside Junior Erik Zuehlke, is ranked among the top seeds in the 3200m run, along with Kenwood Academy's Wilson Tan, Lincoln Park's Andrew Zotti, and Payton's Jonathan Kamel. Erik Zuehlke could be the Mustangs first Indoor City Champion in the 3200m run since Dan Kittaka won it in 2006.

It will be one of the most exciting Indoor meets in the history of the Chicago Public League, and could come down to the 4x400m Relay. The bus will leave for the 2010 Indoor City Championships at 2 pm.
