Northside Varsity upsets Mather to WIN Mustang Classic! Mac Melto WINS 200m Dash and breaks SCHOOL RECORD in the 400m Dash with a 53.70!!!

On Saturday, April 4, 2009, Urban Prep, Taft, Mather, and Steinmetz traveled to River Park in Chicago, Illinois to take on host Northside College Prep in the Mustang Classic. The Mustang Classic was the first Track meet ever hosted by Northside College Prep. The Mustang Classic featured Three scored divisions (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Sophomore-Freshman), which created non-stop action on the Track. Teams were allowed four entries per event in the Varsity and Sophomore-Freshman division, and unlimited entries in the Junior Varsity division. "Goody Bags" were also provided to all participants, courtesy of Universal Sole. 

Team Trophies were awarded to the Top four Teams in the Varsity division. Team Trophies were also awarded to the Top two Teams in the Junior Varsity division, and the Top two Teams in the Sophomore-Freshman division. Engraved USA Track & Field Gold Medals were awarded for first place in all divisions. Silver, and Bronze Medals were awarded through fourth place on the Varsity level, and through second place on the Junior Varsity and Sophomore-Freshman levels. Individual Events were scored 6-4-3-2-1, and Relays were scored 6-4-2. The Sunday, April 5, 2009 edition of the Chicago Sun Times will feature the meet results from the Mustang Classic.  

In the Varsity Men's division, Northside College Prep upset Mather to WIN the meet 107-92! Mather finished in second place with 92 points. Urban Prep finished in third place with 55 points. Taft finished in fourth place with 0 points.

In the Junior Varsity Boys division, Urban Prep won it with 54 points. Northside finished in second place with 53 points. Mather finished in third place with 50 points. Taft finished in fourth place with 6 points.

In the Sophomore-Freshman Boys division, Mather won it with 89 points. Northside finished in second place with 87 points. Urban Prep finished in third place with 57 points. Taft finished in fourth place with 7 points.  

In the Varsity Pole Vault, Northside Sophomore Luke Sobieraj won it with a vault of 7'0. Luke Sobieraj was awarded a Gold USA Track & Field Medal for winning the Pole Vault.

In the Varsity High Jump, Northside Senior Eric Nelson started his day off by getting up at 6am to launch a rocket into space as part of a physics class, and then arrived at the Track at the end of the meet with the crossbar set at 5'6. Northside Senior Eric Nelson had to come into the High Jump competition at the last height (5'6) that the bar was raised too, because he was not present for the previous heights. Nelson cleared 5'6, and went on to Jump a meet record 6'3 to win the Mustang Classic. Eric Nelson was awarded a Gold USA Track & Field Medal for winning High Jump. Northside Junior Hunter Speese finished in second place with a jump of 5'4. Speese had no misses until 5'6. Hunter Speese was awarded a silver medal for finishing in second place. Mather Junior Eddie Seda finished in third place with a jump of 5'4. Northside Freshman Mac Melto finished in fourth place with a personal best jump of 5'2. Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic completed the scoring with a jump of 4'6. 

In the Junior Varsity High Jump, Northside Sophomore Neel Patel won it with a jump of 4'4. Patel was awarded a Gold USA Track & Field Medal for finishing in first place. Northside Sophomore Kevin Aguilar finished in second place with a jump of 4'0. Aguilar was awarded a silver medal for finishing in second place. Northside Sophomore Samuel Ruiz came into the competition at 4'2, and made three attempts, and was unable to clear it.

In the Sophomore-Freshman High Jump, Mather Sophomore Marcus Johnson won it with a jump of 5'4. Northside Freshman Josh Williams finished in second place with a jump of 4'10. Williams was awarded a silver medal for placing second overall. Northside Freshman Fabian Lara finished in third place with a jump of 4'4. Fabian Lara had no misses until 4'6. Northside Freshman Derek Lin finished in fourth place with a jump of 4'4. Northside Sophomore Fermie Ma finished in fifth place with a jump of 4'2 for the Mustangs to complete the scoring.

In the Varsity Long Jump, Urban Prep Junior Rayvaugh Hines won it with a jump of 17'7. Northside Senior Martin Melto finished in second place with a jump of 17'5.25. Martin Melto was awarded a silver medal for finishing in second place. Northside Sophomore Luke Sobieraj finished in third place with a jump of 16'4.5. Northside Freshman Mac Melto finished in fourth place with a jump of 14'9.

In the Junior Varsity Long Jump, Northside Sophomore Samuel Ruiz won it with a jump of 12'5.5. Northside Sophomore Kevin Aguilar finished in second place with a jump of 11'1.5. Ruiz, and Aguilar were awarded Gold and Silver Medals respectively for finishing in first and second place.

In the Sophomore-Freshman Long Jump, Mather Sophomore Marcus Johnson won it with a jump of 16'8.5. Northside Freshman Josh Williams finished in second place with a jump of 15'4. Josh Williams was awarded a silver medal for finishing in second place. Urban Prep Freshman JaBrice Reese finished in third place with a jump of 14'10.75. Northside Sophomore Noman Lashkariya finished in fourth place with a jump of 11'5.5.

In the Varsity Triple Jump, Urban Prep Junior Rayvaugh Hines won it with a jump of 38'5. Northside Senior Martin Melto finished in second place with a jump of 35'7.5. Martin Melto was awarded a silver medal for finishing in second place. Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic finished in third place with a jump of 32'3.25. Jusuf Skelic was awarded a bronze medel for finishing in third place.

In the Junior Varsity Triple Jump, Urban Prep Junior Eric Charles won it with a jump of 31'6.5. Urban Prep Sophomore James Cole finished in second place with a jump of 27'4.

In the Sophomore-Freshman Triple Jump, Mather Sophomore Marcus Johnson won it with a jump of 34'6.5. Northside Freshman Josh Williams finished in second place with a jump of 31'5.5. Northside Freshman Derek Lin finished in third place with a jump of 31'1.5.

In the Varsity Shot Put, Mather Junior Ameen Solebo won it with a throw of 45'0.50. Northside Senior John Ko finished in second place with a personal best throw of 39'1. John Ko was awarded a silver medal for finishing in second place overall. Mather Senior Ethan Rodriguez finished in third place with a throw of 37'0. Northside Senior Ted Kalaw finished in fourth place with a throw of 35'9.

In the Junior Varsity Shot Put, Mather Freshman Jarell Smith won it with a throw of 28'4. Northside Sophomore Neel Patel finished in second place with a throw of 27'7.5. Urban Prep Freshman Vernon Cheeks finished in third place with a throw of 27'7. Northside Freshman Luis Mesa finished in fourth place with a throw of 26'3. Northside Junior Sam Olver finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with a throw of 23'8.

In the Sophomore-Freshman Shot Put, Northside Freshman Cody Rios won it with a throw of 29'6. Northside Freshman Fabian Lara finished in second place with a personal best throw of 26'11. Mather's Ignatio Villanueva finished in third place with a throw of 24'0. Northside Sophomore Allen Tu finished in fourth place with a throw of 23'8. Northside Sophomore Mohammed Ahmed completed the scoring by placing fifth overall with a throw of 21'7.

In the Varsity Discus, Mather Senior Ethan Rodriguez won it with a throw of 120'11. Mather Junior Ameen Solebo finished in second place with a throw of 116'10. Northside Senior John Ko finished in third place with a throw of 96'10. Northside Junior Andrew Czyszczon finished in fourth place with a personal best throw of 78'10. Northside Senior Ted Kalaw finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with a personal best throw of 65'4.5.

In the Junior Varsity Discus, Mather Freshman Jarell Smith won it with a throw of 83'11.5. Urban Prep's James Cole finished in second place with a throw of 66'0. Urban Prep Freshman Vernon Cheecks finished in third place with a throw of 61'5.5.

In the Sophomore-Freshman Discus, Northside Freshman Cody Rios won it with a throw of 69'0. Northside Sophomore Mohammed Ahmed finished in second place with a throw of 60'2. Northside Sophomore Allen Tu finished in third place with a throw of 55'0.

In the Varsity 3200m Run, Northside Sophomore Charlie Mesimore ran the first mile in 5:18, and then ran a negative split on the second mile of 5:05 for a personal best time of 10:23 to WIN the Mustang Classic. Charlie Mesimore was awarded a Gold USA Track & Field Medal for finishing in first place. Mesimore ran 400m splits of 75, 80 (2:35 800m), 80, 83 (5:18 Mile), 78, 77, 77, and 73 on the final 400m for a personal best time of 10:23. Mather Senior Omar Caban finished in second place with an outstanding time of 10:32. Northside Junior Cooper Eben ran the first mile in 5:20, and then ran a negative split on the second mile of 5:13 for a personal best time of 10:33 to place third overall. Cooper Eben ran 400m splits of 75, 82 (2:37 800m), 80, 83 (5:20 Mile), 81, 81, 78, and 73 on the final 400m for a personal best time of 10:33. Cooper Eben was awarded a bronze medal for finishing in fourth overall. Northside Senior Jon Kittaka ran the first mile in 5:20, and then ran the second mile in 5:27 for an outstanding time of 10:47. Jon Kittaka ran 400m splits of 75, 82 (2:37 800m), 79, 84 (5:20 Mile), 82, 83, 83, and 79 on the final 400m for an outstanding time of 10:47. Mather Junior Abdidilba Haji finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with an outstanding time of 11:06.

In the Junior Varsity 3200m run, Northside Senior Coleman Gailloreto won it with a time of 13:30. Coleman Gailloreto ran the first mile in 6:27, and then ran the second mile in 7:03 for a time of 13:30. Coleman Gailloreto was awarded a Gold Medal for finishing in first place.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 3200m run, Mather Freshman Bena Negash finished in first place with a personal best time of 10:38. Northside Sophomore Erik Zuehlke finished in second place with a time of 11:45. Northside Freshman Juan Ringor finished in third place with a personal best time of 11:50.

In the Varsity 4x100m Relay, Mather won it with an outstanding time of 45.72. Urban Prep finished in second place with a time of 46.31. Northside finished in third place with a time of 49.29. Northside Senior Martin Melto ran a 100m split of 11.74 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Senior Brian Chhun ran a 100m split of 12.20 on the second leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Luke Sobieraj ran a 100m split of 11.53 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Senior John Konow ran a 100m split of 13.82 to anchor the Mustangs to 3rd place overall, with a time of 49.29.

In the Junior Varsity 4x100m Relay, Mather won it with a time of 51.66. Urban Prep finished in second place with a time of 52.33. Northside finished in third place with a time of 55.53. Northside Freshman Luis Mesa ran a 13.19 100m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Samuel Ruiz ran a 13.39 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Neel Patel ran a 15.70 100m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Junior Sam Olver anchored the Mustangs with a 12.82 100m split, for a total time of 55.53.

In the Sophomore-Freshman Boys 4x100m Relay, Urban Prep won it with a time of 47.90. Mather finished in second place with a time of 49.69. Northside finished in third place with a time of 55.84. Northside Freshman Ricard Do ran a 13.99 100m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Derek Lin ran a 12.13 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Noman Lashkariya ran a 15.78 100m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Mohammed Ahmed anchored the Mustangs with a 13.73 100m split, for a total time of 55.84.

In the Varsity 4x800m Relay, Mather won it with a time of 8:58. Northside finished in second place with a time of 9:43. Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic ran a 2:21 (63/78) 800m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Fahad Sarvari ran a 2:22 800m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Simon Vecchioni ran a 2:22 (70/72) 800m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Junior Peter Wilk anchored the Mustangs to second place with a 2:38 (73/85)  800m split, for a total time of 9:43. Jusuf Skelic, Fahad Sarvari, Simon Vecchioni, and Peter Wilk were awarded silver medals for placing second overall.

The Junior Varsity Boys 4x800m Relay was scratched due to none of the schools fielding a Team. 

In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x800m Relay, Mather won it with a 9:34. Northside finished in second place with a 10:22.34. Northside Sophomore Luis Gaytan ran the first 400m in 67 seconds, and the final 400m in 84 seconds for a 800m split of 2:31 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Michael Loftus ran the first 400m in 70 seconds, and the final 400m in 84 seconds for a 800m split of 2:34 on the second leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Juan Ringor ran the first 400m in 72 seconds, and the final 400m in 82 seconds for a 800m split of 2:34 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Fabian Lara anchored the Mustangs to second place by running the first 400m in 73 seconds and the final 400m in 86 seconds for a 800m split of 2:39, and a total time of 10:22.34. Luis Gaytan, Michael Loftus, Juan Ringor, and Fabian Lara were awarded silver medals for placing second overall.

In the Varsity 110m Hurdles, Mather Senior Isiah Flowers won it with a time of 17.50. Urban Prep Junior Jamil Boldian finished in second place with a time of 17.70. Northside Junior Andrew Czyszczon finished in third place with a time of 21.20. Andrew Czyszczon was awarded a Medal for placing third overall. Northside Sophomore Muhammad Hossain finished in fourth place with a personal best time of 22.40.

In the Junior Varsity 110m Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Neel Patel won it with a personal best time of 25.81.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 110m Hurdles, Urban Prep Sophomore Isreal Durley dropped 4 seconds of his PR, for a personal best time of 18.60 to win it. Mather Sophomore Marcus Griffith finished in second place with an outstanding time of 20.60. Northside Freshman Derek Lin finished in third place with a personal best time of 22.40.

In the Varsity 100m Dash, Urban Prep Junior Anthony Ponder won it with an outstanding time of 11.50. Mather Senior Omniponce Jimenez finished in second place with an outstanding time of 11.60. Urban Prep Junior Rayvaughn Hines finished in third place with a time of 11.81. Northside Sophomore Luke Sobieraj finished in fourth place with a personal best time of 12.56. Urban Prep Junior Cameron Barnes finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with an outstanding time of 12.62.

In the Junior Varsity 100m Dash, Northside Junior Neal Capapas won it with a time of 12.81. Mather Junior Kevin Kayade finished in second place with a time of 12.98. Urban Prep Sophomore Eric Charles finished in third place with a time of 13.69. Northside Freshman Luis Mesa finished in fourth place with a time of 13.85. Urban Prep Sophomore James Cole finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with a time of 14.75. 

In the Sophomore-Freshman 100m Dash, Urban Prep Sophomore Cedric Beard won it with a time of 11.91. Urban Prep Freshman Rashid Williams finished in second place with a time of 11.94. Mather Freshman Vadial Bennet finished in third place with a time of 12.06. Urban Prep Freshman JaBrice Reese finished in fourth place with a time of 12.56. Northside Freshman Richard Do finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with a time of 13.87.

In the Varsity 800m run, Mather Senior Ivan Coronel won it with a time of 2:04.34. Mather Senior Mikey Medina finished in second place with a time of 2:08.00. Urban Prep Junior Marlon Marshall finished in third place with a time of 2:09.75. Northside Senior Jon Kittaka finished in fourth place with a time of 2:13.56. Northside Freshman Jusuf Skelic finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with a time of 2:20.35.

In the Junior Varsity 800m run, Taft Junior Mike Chrysty won it with a time of 2:28.06. Urban Prep Freshman Shondelle Bohanan finished in second place with a time of 2:43.44. Mather Freshman Mike Ivgo finished in third place with a time of 2:53. Mather Freshman Kenneth Singleton finished in fourth place with a time of 5:03.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 800m run, Mather Sophomore Tarik Estrada won it with a time of 2:13.88. Taft Sophomore Matt Grobelny finished in second place with a time of 2:25.19. Urban Prep Freshman Eric Brown finished in third place with a personal best time of 2:30.18. Northside Freshman Josh Williams finished in fourth place with a personal best time of 2:31.75. Northside Freshman Juan Ringor completed the scoring by finishing in fifth place with a time of 2:32.00. Northside Sophomore Fermie Ma ran a personal best time of 2:50.90.

In the Varsity Thrower's 4x100m Relay, Mather won it with a time of 60.15.

The Junior Varsity Thrower's 4x100m Relay was scratched due to none of the schools fielding a Team.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x100m Relay, Northside won it with a time of 57.72. Cody Rios, Allen Tu, Mohammed Ahmed, and Fabian Lara were awarded Medals for finishing in first place.

In the Varsity 4x200m Relay, Mather won it with a time of 1:37.88. Northside finished in second place with a time of 1:49.78. Northside Senior Martin Melto ran a 25.98 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Junior Hunter Speese ran a 26.43 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Brian Chhun ran a 28.98 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Senior Jon Kittaka anchored the Mustangs to second place with a 28.12 200m split, for a total time of 1:49.78.

In the Junior Varsity 4x200m Relay, Urban Prep won it with a time of 1:54.35. Northside finished in second place with a time of 1:58.75. Luis Mesa, Samuel Ruiz, Kevin Aguilar, and Neal Capapas were awarded silver medals for finishing in second place.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x200m Relay, Urban Prep won it with a time of 1:41.72. Mather finished in second place with a time of 1:41.75. Northside finished in third place with a time of 2:00.91. Northside Freshman Richard Do ran a 26.53 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Allen Tu ran a 29.21 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Noman Lashkariya ran a 26.89 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Freshman Cody Rios anchored the Mustangs to third place with 38.28 200m split, for a total time of 2:00.91.

In the Varsity 400m Dash, Urban Prep Junior Marlon Marshall won it with a time of 52.84. Urban Prep Sophomore Anthony Ponder finished in second place with a time of 53.50. Northside Freshman Mac Melto BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 53.70 to place third overall. Mac Melto was awarded a Medal for placing third overall, and will receive a watermelon at practice on monday, and a record breaker plaque at the June Track & Field banquet. Mather Senior Abdulai Habib finished in fourth place with an outstanding time of 54.18. Mather Senior Mickey Medina completed the scoring by placing fifth overall with a time of 54.93.

In the Junior Varsity 400m Dash, Mather's Garcidvenas won it with a time of 60.00. Mather's Kinov finished in second place with a time of 73.32.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 400m Dash, Mather Sophomore Andrew Popzgeorgeious won it with a time of 59.32. Mather Sophomore Denzel Payne finished in second place with a time of 61.25. Taft Sophomore Andrey Dutka finished in third place with a time of 62.93. Northside Sophomore Andres Del Gado finished in fourth place with a time of 70.81.

In the Varsity 300m Hurdles, Urban Prep Junior Jamil Boldian won it with a time of 43.78. Mather Senior Erick Orrego finished in second place with a time of 48.69. Northside Junior Andrew Czyszczon finished in third place with a personal best time of 49.33. Northside Sophomore Muhammad Hossain finished in fourth place with a personal best time of 58.35.

The Junior Varsity 300m Hurdles were scratched due to none of the Teams field athletes for the event.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 300m Hurdles, Urban Prep Sophomore Israel Durley won it with a time of 46.31. Mather Sophomore Marcus Griffith finished in second place with a time of 51.09.

In the Varsity Mile, Northside Sophomore Wesley Laytham won it with an outstanding time of 4:45.82. Northside Sophomore Charlie Mesimore finished in second place with an outstanding time of 4:51.87. Northside Junior Cooper Eben finished in third place with a time of 4:57.00. Wesley Laytham, Charlie Mesimore, and Cooper Eben were awarded Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals respectively, for placing 1-2-3 in the Mile. Mather Senior Alex Soroporu finished in fourth place with a time of 5:05. Mather Senior Sheedy Victor completed the scoring by placing fifth overall with a time of 5:10. Mather Junior Abdidilba Haji finished in sixth place with a time of 5:14. Northside Senior Simon Vecchioni finished in seventh place with a time of 5:20.06.

In the Junior Varsity Mile, Urban Prep Freshman Shondelle Bohanan won it with a personal best time of 5:57. Bohanan dropped 20 seconds off his PR, and was awarded a Gold medal for winning the mile. Mather Freshman Micheal Do finished in second place with a time of 8:18.

In the Sophomore-Freshman Mile, Mather Freshman Bana Negash won it with a time of 5:05. Mather Sophomore Tarik Estrada finished in second place with a time of 5:09. Northside Sophomore Erik Zuehlke finished in third place with a time of 5:17. Northside Freshman Taylor Kuehn finished in fourth place with a time of 5:21.78. Northside Sophomore Luis Gaytan completed the scoring by finishing in fifth place with a time of 5:28.56. Northside Sophomore Michael Loftus finished in sixth place with a personal best time of 5:48.09. Taft Sophomore Matt Grobelny finished in seventh place with a time of 6:05.72.

In the Varsity 200m Dash, Northside Freshman Mac Melto came from behind to win it, with a personal best time of 24.10. Mac Metlo was awarded a Gold USA Track & Field Medal for winning the 200m Dash. Mather Senior Justin Garth finished in second place with a time of 24.20. Mather Senior Isiah Flowers finished in third place with an outstanding time of 24.90.

In the Junior Varsity 200m Dash, Mather Senior Martin Gores won it with a time of 26.13. Urban Prep Sophomore Jonathan Holmes finished in second place with a time of 27.10. Mather Junior Kevin Kayade finished in third place with a time of 28.84.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 200m Dash, Urban Prep Sophomore Cedric Beard won it with a time of 24.60. Urban Prep Sophomore Israel Durley finished in second place with a time of 24.80. Mather Freshman Shakell Roserio finished in third place with a time of 25.00. Mather Freshman Vadial Bennett finished in fourth place with a time of 25.50. Urban Prep Freshman Rashid Williams completed the scoring by finishing in fifth place with a time of 26.10. In the Varsity 4x400m Relay, Urban Prep won it with an outstanding time of 3:39.69. Mather finished in second place with a time of 3:43.28. Northside finished in third place with a time of 3:59.56. Northside Junior Hunter Speese ran a 400m split of 58.12 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Junior Cooper Eben ran a 400m split of 62.15 on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Simon Vecchioni ran a 400m split of 64.00 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Wesley Laytham anchored the Mustangs to third place, with a 400m split of 55.29, for a total time of 3:59.56.

In the Junior Varsity 4x400m Relay, Urban Prep won it with an outstanding time of 5:08.37.

In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x400m Relay, Mather won it with a time of 4:04.91. Urban Prep finished in second place with a time of 4:29.66. Northside finished in third place with a time of 4:35.65. Northside Sophomore Luis Gaytan ran a 400m split of 63.32 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Erik Zuehlke ran a 400m split of 66.64 on the second leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Taylor Kuehn ran a 400m split of 69.78 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Andres Del Gado anchored the Mustangs to third place, with a 400m split of 69.92, for a total time of 4:29.66.
