Northside Varsity Women upset Loyola Academy!!! Adaora Achufusi WINS 400m! Maria Torres WINS Triple Jump and High Jump! Varsity Women 9-3!!!

On Tuesday, February 17, 2009, the Northside Varsity Women and Junior Varsity Women traveled to Winnetka, Illinois for the New Trier Indoor Classic. The meet featured Loyola Academy, Northside College Prep, North Shore Country Day, Roosevelt, and host New Trier. 

In the Varsity division, the Northside Varsity Women shocked Loyola Academy with a 66 to 29 point victory!!! The Mustangs also posted victories over Roosevelt (9 points), and North Shore Country Day (2 points). New Trier held off the challenge from the suprising Mustangs to win the meet with a mere 82 points. The Northside Varsity Women now have a record of 9-3!!, and will be big favorites heading into the Bloom Trail Varsity Invitational on Saturday, February 21, 2009. 

In the Junior Varsity division, New Trier won the meet with 88 points, and posted victories over Loyola (71 points), Northside College Prep (23 points), Roosevelt (6 points), and North Shore Country Day (0 points). The Northside Junior Varsity Girls started their season with a 2-2 record. The Northside Junior Varsity will also travel to Chicago Heights on Saturday to compete for Medals at the Bloom Trail Junior Varsity Invitational. 

New Trier used the following point scale to score the meet: Individual events were scored 6-4-3-2-1, and Relays were scored 6-4-2.

In the Varsity Shot Put, New Trier's McAuley won it with a throw of 31'4.5. Roosevelt's Miscke finished in second with a personal best throw of 27'6.75. Northside Sophomore Caeleigh Renkosiak finished in third with an outstanding throw of 27'5.75. Northside Sophomore Katie Dugan finished in fourth with a throw of 26'1.5.

In the Junior Varsity Shot Put, Loyola Academy's Azubuike won it with a throw of 23'4.5. New Trier's Walsdorf finished in second with a throw of 21'8.75. Northside College Prep Tiffany Tran threw a personal best 21'0.25 to place third overall. Loyola Academy's Marino finished in fourth with a throw of 16'10. Roosevelt's Wright finished in fifth with a throw of 14'3.5.

In the Varsity Long Jump, New Trier's Cash won it with a jump of 14'8. Northside Senior Gayatri Satam finished in second place with an outstanding jump of 12'8. Northside Senior Maria Zdunek finished in third place with a jump of 11'5.

In the Junior Varsity Long Jump, New Trier's Showe won it with a jump of 12'6. New Trier's Sarp finished in second with a jump of 11'11. Loyola Academy's Mokeleba finished in third with a jump of 11'9.5. Loyola Academy's Hermon finished in fourth with a jump of 11'3. New Trier's Munshi finished in fifth with a jump of 10'9. Northside Sophomore Lyndsey Shallberg jumped an outstanding 10'1.   

In the Varsity Triple Jump, Northside Senior Maria Torres WON it with a jump of 33'3! New Trier's Brown finished in second place with a jump of 30'3. Northside Senior Gayatri Satam finished in third place with an outstanding jump of 26'7.

 In the Junior Varsity Triple Jump, New Trier's Schowe won it with a jump of 24'8. New Trier's Moush finished in second with a jump of 23'1. Northside Sophomore Lyndsey Shallberg jumped a personal best 21'7 to place third overall.

In the Varsity High Jump, the Northside Mustangs one-two punch of Maria Torres, and Jennifer Kane took first and second, respectively. Maria Torres jumped 4'3 to WIN the meet. After the meet, Maria Torres jumped 4'8 during an extended practice. Jennifer Kane jumped 4'3 to finish second overall.

In the Junior Varsity High Jump, New Trier's Mattson jumped 4'3 to win it. Northside Sophomore Robin Doherty finished in second with a personal best jump of 4'0. Loyola Academy's Jenko finished in third with a jump of 3'9.

At the conclusion of the Varsity Field Events, the Northside Mustangs found themselves with a commanding lead over New Trier, Loyola, Roosevelt, and North Shore Country Day.

However, New Trier and Loyola, both quickly got themselves back into the meet, when the Mustangs where unable to field a Varsity 4x800m Relay due to Northside relay members not being in attendance at the meet with less than a day's notice to the coaching staff. The question still remains whether their teammates will welcome them back to the Team. 

New Trier won the 4x800m Relay with a time of 11:11. Loyola Academy finished in second with a time of 12:36. North Shore Country Day finished in third with a time of 12:45. 

The Mustangs' Team morale was down after the 4x800m Relay, but Northside Senior Adaora Achufusi, and Northside Sophomore Nina Coomes quickly changed the momentum back in the Mustangs favor.

In the Varsity 400m Dash, Northside Senior Adaora Achufusi WON it with an outstanding time of 70.27. New Trier's Suse finished in second with a time of 71.38. Northside Sophomore Nina Coomes finished in third with an outstanding time of 76.70. Roosevelt's Madison finished in fourth with a time of 80.97. New Trier's Oudia finished in fifth place with a time of 81.97 to complete the scoring. 

In the Varsity 4x145.45 Meters Relay, Northside Senior Jennifer Kane ran a 21.95 split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Senior Anna Parks ran a 22.82 split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Gayatri Satam ran a 23.48 split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Senior Maria Torres ran a 21.19 split, to anchor the Mustangs to second place overall with a total time of 1:29.93. Loyola finished in third with an outstanding time of 1:30.42. Roosevelt finished in fourth with a time of 1:38.05 to complete the scoring.

In the Varsity 50 Yard Low Hurdles, Loyola Academy's Wagaia won it with a time of 8.13. Northside Senior Jennifer Kane finished in second place with a time of 9.28. New Trier's Brown finished in third place with a time of 9.47. Loyola Academy's Simone finished in fourth place with a time of 9.66. New Trier's Hopkins finished in fifth place with a time of 11.97. Northside Senior Maria Zdunek was winning the race but hit her trail leg on the final hurdle, and finished with a time of 13.28.

In the Junior Varsity 50 Yard Low Hurdles, New Trier's Hufter won it with a time of 8.99. Loyola Academy's Hermes finished in second place with a time of 9.66. Northside College Prep Sophomore Robin Doherty finished in third place with an outstanding time of 9.77. Loyola Academy's Muzwieck finished in fourth with a time of 10.54.

In the Varsity 50 Yard Dash, New Trier's T. Berglund won it with a time of 6.45. New Trier's Wynn finished in second place with a time of 6.69. Loyola Academy's Simone finished in third place with a time of 6.85. Roosevelt's Clark finished in fourth place with a time of 7.07. Roosevelt's Beasley completed the scoring with a time of 7.29. Northside Sophomore Caeleigh Renkosiak ran a personal best time of 7.58. Northside Sophomore Katie Dugan ran a personal best time of 8.03. Northside Varsity sprinters Janette Szestowicki, Eghe Obaseki, and Anastasia Rhodes were not at the meet.

In the Junior Varsity 50 Yard Dash, New Trier's Stapleton won it with a time of 6.74. Loyola Academy's Cedon finished in second with a time of 7.01. Northside Sophomore Robin Doherty finished in third place with a personal best time of 7.03. Northside Freshman Rosailie Abbey dropped .51 off her time to finish in fourth place with a personal best time of 7.68! Northside Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with a personal best time of 7.74. Northside Sophomore Tiffany Tran ran a personal best time of 7.78. Roosevelt's Foy ran a time  of 8.01.

In the Varsity 800m run, New Trier's A. Berglund won it with a time of 2:38. New Trier's Shelton finished in second place with a time of 2:45. Northside Senior Adaora Achufusi dropped 7 seconds off her best time to finish in third place with a personal best time of 2:47.97! Loyola Academy's Composto finished in fourth place with a time of 2:49.47. Northside Senior Anna Parks finished in fifth place to complete the scoring wih a time of 2:51.

In the Varsity 200m Dash, New Trier's Labashin finished in first place with a time of 28.53. New Trier's Tunnay finished in second place with a time of 29.05. Loyola Academy's Wagia finished in third place with a time of 30.85. Loyola Academy's Mukeiebka finished in fourth place with a time of 30.92. Northside Senior Jennifer Kane finished in fifth place to complete the scoring with a time of 35.20.

In the Junior Varsity 200m Dash, New Trier's Stapleton won it with a time of 31.34. New Trier's Buids finished in second with a time of 31.57. Loyola Academy's Simons finished in third with a time of 31.32. Loyola Academy's Clifford finished in fourth place with a time of 31.97. Northside College Prep Freshman Rosailie Abbey dropped 1.24 seconds off her best time to finish in fifth place to complete the scoring with a personal best time of 34.10! Northside Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo ran a personal best time of 36.12.

In the Varsity Mile, New Trier's Arneson won it with an outstanding time of 5:47. New Trier's Mitrano finished in second with a time of 5:54. Northside Senior Carmen Abelson ran 145.45 meter splits of 30, 35, 35, 39, 39, 37, 35, 38, 37, 38, and 38 to finish in third place with a time of 6:41. Northside Freshman Waters Cahill earned a Varsity letter in her very first meet by finishing in fourth place to score points for the Mustangs with a personal best time of 6:59. Waters Cahill ran 145.45 meter splits of 30, 36, 36, 36, 40, 40, 38, 36, 42, 43, 48, and a 30 second split on the final 145.45 meters for a personal best time of 6:59.

In the Varsity 4x400m Relay, Northside Senior Adaora Achufusi ran a 69.66 400m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Nina Coomes ran a 76.40 400m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Senior Maria Zdunek ran a 78.58 400m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Senior Anna Parks anchored the Mustangs with a 73.24 400m split to pass Loyola Academy to finish in second place with an outstanding time of 4:57.88.

At the conclusion of the Meet, the Mustangs had a Team huddle to celebrate the outstanding performances at New Trier, and the Mustangs upset victory over Loyola Academy. Northside Sprints Coach David Diaz awarded a stuffed animal called "Scruffy" to Northside Senior Adaora Achufusi as athlete of the meet. Achufusi will have the honor of awarding "Scruffy" to a Northside Athlete at the conclusion of the Bloom Trail Invitational. 

The Northside Varsity Women and Junior Varsity Girls will depart at 7 am on Saturday, February 21, 2009 from Northside College Prep to Chicago Heights, Illinois for the Bloom Trail Invitational.
