Cooper Eben WINS 3200m run with a PR of 10:47 and WINS the Mile with a PR of 5:01! Northside WINS Urban Prep Sophomore-Freshman Relays at UC!

 On Wednesday, March 26, 2008, the Northside College Prep Sophomore-Freshman Boys Track & Field Team traveled to Ted Haydon Stadium at the University of Chicago for the first Outdoor Track & Field meet of the season. The inaugural Urban Prep Sophomore-Freshman Relays Meet was organized by Urban Prep Head Boys Track & Field Coach Derrick Brooms.

  Derrick Brooms is a University of Chicago Alumni, and a member of the University of Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame. Derrick Brooms was the 1996 Amos Alonzo Stagg Medal receipient, and was a two-time UAA Sprint Champion in indoor and outdoor Track & Field. He was also an NCAA All-American, and two time UAA Player of the year as a wide receiver and kick-off returner for the Maroons from 1992-1995. In 1995, Derrick Brooms led the nation with a 35.2 yard kickoff return average as helped lead Chicago to an 8-2 record. On Wednesday, Brooms returned to the University of Chicago to host the newest, and one of the best Sophomore-Freshman Relay Meets in Chicago.

  The inaugural meet, featured Urban Prep, Northside College Prep, Leo, Collins Academy, North Lawndale Prep, and Chicago Agriculture and Science. Medals were awarded to the top 3 athletes in each event, and Ribbons were awarded for fourth through sixth place. The Point scale for individual events and relays was 10-8-6-4-2-1. The athletes also had the priviledge of running on the nicest Outdoor Track in Chicago. The University of Chicago's Outdoor Track at Ted Haydon Stadium was just recently resurfaced prior to the meet. Among those in attendance, included University of Chicago Head Track Coach Chris Hall.

   Northside College Prep WON the meet with 132 Points! Urban Prep finished in second place with 98 points. Leo finished in third place with 81 points. Chicago Agriculture and Science finished in fourth place with 38 points. North Lawndale finished in fifth with 22 points. Collins Academy finished in sixth place with 11 points.

  In the Shot Put, Northside Freshman Jordan Jackson WON it with a personal best throw of 31'0. Jordan Jackson was awarded a Gold Medal for finishing in first place. Sophomore Andrew Czyszczon fnished in second with an outstanding throw of 29'9. Andrew Czyszczon was awarded a Silver Medal for finishing in second place. Northside Sophomore Sam Olver finished in eighth with a personal best throw of 23'3.5.

 In the Discus, Northside Sophomore Andrew Czyszczon finished in second place with a personal best throw of 70'6. Andrew Czyszczon was awarded a Silver Medal for finishing in second place. Freshman Jordan Jackson threw a personal best 56'5. Northside Sophomore Kevin-Ryan Alvarez threw a personal best 40'4.

 In the Triple Jump, Northside Freshman Miles Austrevich earned a Ribbon by placing fifth overall with a personal best jump of 29'11.

 In the Long Jump, Northside Sophomore Hunter Speese jumped 15'5. Northside Sophomore Kevin-Ryan Alvarez jumped a personal best 12'11.

 In the Sprint Medley Relay, Freshman Peter Wilk ran a 100m split of 13.29 and made a nice exchange to Freshman Noel Lopez. Noel Lopez ran a 13.34 100m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Hunter Speese. Hunter Speese quickly passed Leo, and moved the Mustangs into 2nd place, with a 24.82 200m split, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Neal Capapas. Neal Capapas heald off a surge from Chicago Agriculture & Science to anchor the Mustangs with a 59.82 400m split, for a total time of 1:51.27. Peter Wilk, Noel Lopez, Hunter Speese, and Neal Capapas were awarded Silver Medals for placing second overall!

  In the 4x800m Relay, Sophomore Andrew Czyszczon ran a season best 2:29.87 800m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Freshman Erik Zuehlke. Erik Zuehlke ran a 2:38.97 800m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Freshman Rhiday Pandya. Rhiday Panday ran a personal best 2:31.53 800m split, and passed both Urban Prep, and Leo to put the Mustangs in first place before making an exchange to Freshman Miles Austrevich. Miles Austrevich anchored the Mustangs to victory with a 2:30.25 800m split, for a total time of 10:10.62. Leo finished in second place with a time of 10:15.63. Urban Prep finished in third place with a time of 10:51. Collins Academy finished in fourth place, and was followed by North Lawndale Prep, and Chicago Agriculture and Science. Gold Medals were awarded to Andrew Czyszczon, Erik Zuehlke, Rhiday Pandya, and Miles Austrevich for finishing in first place overall!

  In the 4x100m Relay, Freshman Hunter Speese ran a 12.03 100m split, and made a nice exchange to Hersch Perlmutter. Freshman Hersch Perlmutter ran a 12.22 100m split, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Brandon Teng ran a 13.72 100m split, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Peter Wilk. Peter Wilk anchored the Mustangs to third place with a 13.44 100m split, for a total time of 51.41. Hunter Speese, Hersch Perlmutter, Brandon Teng, and Peter Wilk were awarded Bronze Medals for placing third overall.

  In the 3200m Run, Northside Sophomore Cooper Eben WON it with an personal best time of 10:47. Cooper Eben ran the first 800m in 2:32, and went through the Mile in 5:18 (2:32/2:46), and went through the 1.5 Mile mark in 8:07 (2:49 800m split), and finished with a personal best time of 10:47 (2:40 final 800m split). Cooper Eben lapped the entire field on the final lap, and was awarded a Gold Medal for placing first overall! Northside Sophomore James Rey, and Urban Prep's Brandon Warren ran toe to toe for the first 800m (2:53), and were still running toe to toe through the Mile in 6:06. Northside Sophomore James Rey broke away for a 3 second lead at the 1.5 mile mark (9:22), and finished with a personal best time of 12:33 to finish in second place overall! James Rey was awarded a Silver Medal for placing second overall! Urban Prep's Brandon Warren ran a personal best time of 12:50, it was a PR by over 10 seconds, to place third overall! Urban Prep's Brandon Warren was awarded the Bronze Medal!

  In the 4x200m Relay, Sophomore Hunter Speese ran a 24.69 200m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Neal Capapas. Sophomore Neal Capapas ran a 25.72 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Freshman Noel Lopez ran a 28.84 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Freshman Hersch Perlmutter anchored the Mustangs to third place with a 25.81 200m split, for a total time of 1:45.31. Northside Sophomore Hunter Speese, Sophomore Neal Capapas, Freshman Noel Lopez, and Freshman Hersch Perlmutter were awarded Bronze Medals for finishing in third place overall!

  In the 4x100m Thrower's Relay, Freshman Jordan Jackson ran a 14.60 100m split on the first leg of the relay. Sophomore Sam Olver ran a 13.35 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Kevin-Ryan Alvarez ran a 14.34 100m split on the third leg of the relay. Sophomore Andrew Czyszczon anchored the Mustangs to Victory with a 14.00 100m split, for a total time of 56.29. Northside Freshman Jordan Jackson, Sophomore Sam Olver, Sophomore Kevin-Ryan Alvarez, and Sophomore Andrew Czyszczon were awarded Gold Medals for finishing in first place overall in the 4x100m Thrower's Relay!

  In the Distance Medley Relay, Freshman Luis Gaytan ran a personal best 2:36.72 800m split on the first leg of the Relay, and made nice exchange to Freshman Rhiday Pandya. Rhiday Pandya ran a personal best 65.47 400m split on the second leg of the Relay, and made a nice exchange to Freshman Erik Zuehlke. Erik Zuehlke ran a 4:31.88 1200m split on the third leg of the relay. Sophomore James Rey anchored the Mustangs to second place overall with a 6:07 Mile split, for a total time of 14:21. Northside Freshman Luis Gaytan, Rhiday Pandya, Erik Zuehlke, and Sophomore James Rey were awarded Silver Medals for placing second overall.

  In the Middle Distance Medley Relay, Freshman Christopher Nguyen ran a personal best 33.11 200m split on the first leg of the Relay. Freshman Hersch Perlmutter ran a 30.38 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Neibu Tadele ran a 72.47 400m split on the third leg of the relay. Freshman Will Riley anchored the Mustangs to third place with a 2:57.91 800m split, for a total time of 5:13.87. Christopher Nguyen, Hersch Perlmutter, Neibu Tadele, and Will Riley were awarded Medals for placing third overall.

  In the Mile, Northside Sophomore Cooper Eben ran toe to toe with North Lawndale Brandon Thorpe for the first 400m, with a 68. Cooper Eben then broke away from Brandon Thorpe at the 800m mark, with a 78 second quarter for an 800m split of 2:26. Eben was on pace to break the five minute barrier, and everyone had their eyes glued to the stadium scoreboard. Cooper Eben ran the next 400m in 80, and went through 1200m in 3:46. Cooper Eben ran the last 400m in 75 to WIN the Mile with a personal best time of 5:01. Cooper Eben was awarded a Gold Medal for placing first overall. The Mustangs are looking forward to Cooper Eben's next attempt to break the five minute barrier at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday, March 29, 2008. While Cooper Eben was chasing history, Northside Freshman Miles Austrevich caught North Lawndale's Brandon Thorpe and Northan Lawndale's Niram Moss at the 1200m, with a 4:27 (82/93/92) to put the Mustangs in position for a possible 1-2 finish. Miles Austrevich outkicked Brandon Thorpe to the finish with a 79 split for the last 400m, for a total time of 5:46 to place second overall. Miles Austrevich was awarded a Silver Medal for placing second overall. North Lawndale's Brandon Thorpe finished third overall with an outstanding time of 6:00.16. Northside Freshman Luis Gaytan finished in fourth place overall with an outstanding time of 6:07. Luis Gaytan was awarded a Ribbon for placing fourth overall. North Lawndale's Miram Moss finished in fifth place with an outstanding time of 6:25. Collins Academy's Marco Trevino completed the scoring by placing sixth with a time of 6:41.
