On Wednesday, March 25, 2009, the Northside College Prep Sophomore-Freshman Boys Track & Field Team traveled to Ted Haydon Stadium at the University of Chicago for the first Outdoor Track & Field meet of the season. The 2nd Annual Sophomore-Freshman Urban Prep Relays Meet is organized by Urban Prep Head Boys Track & Field Coach Derrick Brooms.

Derrick Brooms is a University of Chicago Alumni, and a member of the University of Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame. Derrick Brooms was the 1996 Amos Alonzo Stagg Medal receipient, and was a two-time UAA Sprint Champion in indoor and outdoor Track & Field. He was also an NCAA All-American, and two time UAA Player of the year as a wide receiver and kick-off returner for the Maroons from 1992-1995. In 1995, Derrick Brooms led the nation with a 35.2 yard kickoff return average as he helped lead Chicago to an 8-2 record. Many athletes that played against him, have said that Brooms was so fast that he could not be tackled, and literaly controlled the outcome of a game. During the off-season, Derrick Brooms was the guest of honor of several Northside sprint coaching staff meetings.

On Wednesday, Brooms returned to the University of Chicago to host the best Sophomore-Freshman Relay Meet in Chicago. The meet featured host Urban Prep, Northside College Prep, North Lawndale, Perspectives-Calumet and Leo. Leo is the alma matter of Northside High Jump Coach Cordell Lewis.
