Jay Yu BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD in Pole Vault! Tom Frejowski WINS 800m run! Malcolm Grba WINS 400m Dash! Tom Frejowski anchors 4x400m Relay to Victory!

 On Wednesday, April 16, 2014, the Northside Varsity Men traveled to Adams Stadium at Deerfield High School in Deerfield, Illinois for the 2014 Deerfield Warrior Track & Field Classic.  

 The meet featured Glenbrook North, Northside College Prep, and host Deerfield High School. Individual events were scored 5-3-2-1, and relays were scored 5-3.

 In a nice ceremony prior to the start of the meet, Deerfield honored all of their Seniors by having them walk 100m with their parents, as career highlights of each Senior were read by the P.A. Announcer.  

 Deerfield High School is one of the most highly competive places to compete at in Illinois. In 2011, Deerfield High School finished fifth in the Class 3A State Track & Field Championships and won the 2011 IHSA Sectional Championships. Deerfield had all of their weapons on Wednesday, and entered as many as 12 athletes in each individual event. Deerfield also had three to four relays in the 4x800m, 4x100m, 4x200m, and 4x400m Relays.

 The Northside Mustangs rose up to the challenge, and had an outstanding meet. Deerfield Head Coach Jeremy Kaufman praised the Northside athletes for their outstanding performances, and is looking forward to seeing the Mustangs again at the IHSA State Championships in Charleston, Illinois.

 In the Pole Vault, Northside Senior Jay Yu BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best vault of 9'0. Jay Yu will be honored in practice, and receive a Watermelon for breaking the school record!

 In the Shot Put, Northside Freshman Jacob Cosby threw an outstanding 36'5.

 In the Discus, Northside Freshman Jacob Cosby had a PERSONAL BEST throw of 53'5.

 In the Long Jump, Northside Freshman Jack Nolan jumped an outstanding 12'5. Northside Freshman Sergio Soto jumped a personal best 12'2.50.

 In the High Jump, Northside Sophomores Keith Jones, Steven Kataba, and Philip Wdowiak made three outstanding attempts at 5'0, but were unable to clear it.

 Northside scratched the 3200m run, 4x800m Relay, and 4x200m Relay.

 In the Varsity 4x100m Relay, Northside Sophomore Steven Kataba, Sophomore Keith Jones, Freshman Brandon Banas, and Sophomore Philip Wdowiak combined for an official time of 47.84. 

 In the Varsity 110m Hurdles, Northside Freshman Jack Nolan hurdled an official time of 24.32

 In the Varsity 100m Dash, Northside Sophomore Philip Wdowiak finished in fourth place overall with a PERSONAL BEST time of 11.72. Philip Wdowiak DROPPED 0.49 of a second (12.21) with a personal bet time of 11.72. Northside Sophomore Keith Jones finished in sixth place with an outstanding time of 12.09. Northside Sophomore Steven Kataba ran an outstanding time of 12.29. Northside Freshman Josh Borgwardt dropped 0.24 of a second (13.20) for a personal best time of 12.96.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 100m Dash, Northside Freshman Jacob Cosby ran a personal best time of 12.80.

 In the Varsity 800m run, Northside Junior Tom Frejowski ran the first 400m in 63 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 67 seconds to WIN it with a PERSONAL BEST time of 2:10.70. Northside Freshman Brandon Banas ran the first 400m in 80 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 74 seconds for a personal best time of 2:34.00.

 In the Varsity 400m Dash, Northside Junior Malcolm Grba WON it with an official time of 54.20. Northside Sophomore Matthew Gomez ran an outstanding time of 58.13.

 In the Varsity 300m Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Keith Jones finished in SECOND place with a personal best time of 52.40. Northside Freshman Jack Nolan finished in fourth place to complete the scoring with an official time of 58.57

 In the Varsity 1600m run, Northside Senior Cesar Rufino finished in third place with an official time of 5:02.70. Northside Junior Max McCoy ran the first 400m in 73 seconds, and then ran the next 400m in 79 seconds (2:32 800m), and then ran the next 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 76 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in another NEGATIVE split of 75 seconds to finish in fourth place to complete the scoring with a personal best time of 5:03.70. Northside Senior Alex Gordon ran the first 800m in 2:37, and then ran the final 800m in 2:45 for an official time of 5:22.00.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 1600m run, Northside Sophomore Sarrin Chethik finished in fifth place with an outstanding time of 5:20.80. Northside Freshman Sergio Soto ran a personal best time of 5:37.60.

 In the 200m Dash, Northside Freshman Brandon Banas ran a personal best time of 25.96. Northside Freshman Jacob Cosby ran a personal best time of 27.95.

 In the 4x400m Relay, Northside Junior Malcolm Grba ran a 400m split of 53.81 on the first leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Sophomore Matthew Gomez. Matthew Gomez ran a personal best 400m split of 56.94, and made a nice exchange to Junior Max McCoy. Max McCoy ran a 59.56 400m split, and made a good exchange to Junior Tom Frejowski. When Tom Frejowski received the baton, Northside was in third place, behind both Deerfield, and Glenbrook North, and it looked like he had no chance of catching the leader. Frejowski caught Deerfield at the 250m mark, and then caught Glenbrook North at the finish line to WIN it for the Mustangs with an impressive 52.31 400m split for an outstanding time of 3:42.91.
