Rosen passes 3 TEAMS on anchor leg to finish THIRD in 4x1600m Relay! Fitzpatrick,Osborne,Abbey & Yu finish 2ND in Triple Jump Relay! 4 School Records!

 On Friday, May 2, 2014, the Northside Varsity Men traveled to Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois for the 52nd Annual Spartan Relays.

 The meet featured Deerfield, New Trier, Glenbrook South, Northside College Prep, Highland Park, Stevenson, Lake Zurich, Loyola Academy, Lake Forest, Waukegan, and host Glenbrook North.

 The meet featured the High Jump Relay, Long Jump Relay, Pole Vault Relay, Triple Jump Relay, Shot Put Relay, Discus Relay, High Hurdle Shuttle Relay, 4x800m Relay, 4x100m Relay, Distance Medley Relay, Middle Distance Medley Relay (200m-200m-400m-800m), Sprint Medley Relay, 4x1 Mile Relay, 4x200m Relay, Low Hurdle Shuttle Relay, Throwers 4x100m Relay, and the 4x400m Relay.

 It is the best relay meet in Illinois, and the hospitality and sportsmanship was second to none.

 Glenbrook North Head Coach Scott Laskey provided meals for the entire coaching staffs of all eleven visiting Teams. Opposing athletes were giving each other high fives after every jump at the high jump pit or throw at the Discus cage. The stands were filled to stadium capacity.   

  The Spartan Relays has over fifty years history of future Olympians, State Champions, and All State Athletes coming together to compete in the Ultimate Relay meet. All events are Relays, including Field Events and Hurdles. 

 Spartan Relay Alumni include NCAA Champion Dave Valentine. Recent State Champions that have competed in Spartan Relays include 1600m Champion, Tom Robbins (Loyola Academy). The list of current and past All State Athletes that have competed in Spartan Relays is endless.

 A Medal or a Ribbon from Spartan Relays is priceless. The Top 3 Teams in each event are awarded a Medal, and places fourth through six are awarded a Ribbon.

 In the Long Jump Relay, Northside (64'04.25), edged Glenbrook North (57'07.75), and Highland Park (53'09.75) for ninth place. Northside Junior Porter Abbey jumped 18'4.75. Northside Freshman Brandon Banas jumped 15'11. Northside Junior Matt Osborne jumped 15'4.5. Northside Sophomore Garret Barch jumped 14'8. 

 In the Triple Jump Relay, Waukegan won it with a total of 156'05.00. Northside Captain Lucien Fitzpatrick jumped 39'0. Northside Junior Matt Osborne jumped 38'7.5. Northside Junior Porter Abbey jumped 38'1.50. Northside Senior Jay Yu jumped 36'5.5. Northside BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD and finished in SECOND place with 152'02.50! Lucien Fitzpatrick, Matt Osborne, Porter Abbey, and Jay Yu were awarded silver MEDALS for finishing in second place overall. Lucien Fitzpatrick, Matt Osborne, Porter Abbey, and Jay Yu will be honored in practice on Monday and receive Watermelons for breaking the school record! Stevenson finished in third place (150'06). Lake Zurich finished in fourth place (149'09.50). New Trier finished in fifth place (148'01.75). Loyola and Glenbrook South tied for sixth place (145'09.50). Glenbrook North finished in eighth place (143'06.25). Highland Park finished in ninth place (136'08.50). Deerfield finished in tenth place (114'00.75). Lake Forest finished in eleventh place (75'00.00).

 In the Discus Relay, Northside edged Loyola Academy (269'08) for tenth place with a total of 335'06. Northside Senior Henry Lothschutz threw the discus an outstanding 97'11. Northside Junior Malcolm Grba threw the discus an outstanding 84'8. Northside Junior Ari Perlmutter threw a personal best 82'9. Northside Sophomore Philip Wdowiak threw a personal best 70'2.

 In the Shot Put Relay, Northside edged Highland Park (116'01.50) for tenth place with a total of 126'06.50. Northside Junior Ari Perlmutter threw an outstanding 36'10. Northside Senior Henry Lothschutz threw 33'0.25. Northside Junior Marek Dobrenko threw 33'0.25. Northside Junior Calvin Kuhnen threw a personal best 23'8.

 In the Pole Vault Relay, Northside edged Lake Forest (9'6), Waukegan, and Stevenson for eighth place with a total of 14'0. Northside Junior Connor Fulton cleared 7'0. Northside Sophomore Brendan Powers cleared 7'0. Northside Sophomore Xavier Sigelko and Senior Jay Yu came into the competition at 9'0. Xavier Sigelko and Jay Yu made three outstanding attempts at 9'0, but were unable to clear it.

 In the High Jump Relay, Northside finished in sixth place with a total of 21'0. Northside Senior Lucien Fitzpatrick had a jump of 5'8. Northside Junior Ari Perlmutter had a jump of 5'4. Northside Sophomore Keith Jones had a jump of 5'2. Northside Sophomore Garret Barch had a jump of 4'10. Lucien Fitzpatrick, Ari Perlmutter, Keith Jones, and Garret Barch were awarded RIBBONS for finishing in sixth place overall.

 Prior to Friday, the 4x110m High Hurdle Shuttle Relay School Record was 1:20.00 (2010), and was held by Northside Alumni legends Hersh Perlmutter, Neel Patel, Luis Mesa, and Andrew Czyszczon.

 In the 4x110m High Hurdle Shuttle Relay, Northside Senior Lucien Fitzpatrick hurdled a 16.41 110m split, and then tagged Junior Porter Abbey. Porter Abbey hurdled a 17.07 110m split, and then tagged Junior Matt Osborne. Matt Osborne hurdled a 17.61 110m split, and then tagged Sophomore Garret Barch. Garret Barch anchored the Mustangs with a 20.29 110m split to BREAK THE SCHOOL RECORD BY NINE SECONDS with an official time of 1:11.60. Lucien Fitzpatrick, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Garret Barch will be honored in practice on Monday and receive Watermelons for breaking the school record! Lucien Fitzpatrick, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Garret Barch also received RIBBONS for finishing in fifth place overall. Highland Park finished in sixth place with an official time of 1:11.70. Lake Zurich finished in seventh place with an official time of 1:11.90. Loyola Academy finished in eighth place with an official time of 1:15.00. Stevenson finished in ninth place with an official time of 1:19.00.

 In the 4x800m Relay, Northside came within 0.65 of a second (8:22.95) of their season best 4x800m Relay time. Northside finished in fifth place with an outstanding time of 8:23.60. Northside Junior Malcolm Grba ran the first 400m in 59 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 65 seconds for a 2:04.22 800m split, and then made an exchange to Simon Kafka. Northside Senior Simon Kafka ran the first 400m in 61 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 62 seconds for a 2:03.48 800m split, and then made a nice exchange to Matthew Gomez. Northside Sophomore Matthew Gomez ran the first 400m in 64 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 69 seconds for a 2:13.69 800m split, and then made a perfect exchange to Danny Rosen. Northside Sophomore Danny Rosen anchored the Mustangs to fifth place by running the first 400m in 58 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 64 seconds for a 2:02.23 800m split for an official time of 8:23.60. Malcolm Grba, Simon Kafka, Matthew Gomez, and Danny Rosen were awarded RIBBONS for finishing in fifth place overall. Glenbrook South finished in sixth place with an official time of 8:33.50. Stevenson finished in seventh place with an official time of 8:41.80. Lake Zurich finished in eighth place with an official time of 8:48.10. Waukegan finished in ninth place with an official time of 8:54.80. Deerfield finished in tenth place with an official time of 9:10.20. Lake Forest finished in eleventh place with an official time of 9:26.10.

 In the 4x100m Relay, the Northside sprinters finished in ninth place with an official time of 47.90. Sophomore Keith Jones ran a 11.88 100m split on the first leg of the relay. Sophomore Steven Kataba ran a 12.08 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Philip Wdowiak ran a 11.97 100m split on the third leg of the relay. Junior Tom Frejowski ran a 11.44 100m split to anchor the Mustangs to ninth place with an official time of 47.90.

 In the Distance Medley Relay, Northside Senior Nate Mendez ran 400m splits of 66, 77 (2:23 800m), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 70 seconds for a 1200m split of 3:33.96, and then made a perfect exchange to Brandon Banas. Northside Freshman Brandon Banas ran a 400m split of 58.88, and then made an exchange to Max McCoy. Northside Junior Max McCoy ran the first 400m in 65 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 69 seconds for an 800m split of 2:14.37. Northside Senior Cesar Rufino anchored the Mustangs with a 5:02 1600m split for an official time of 11:49.45.

 In the Middle Distance Medley Relay, Northside was disqualified due to Sophomore Troy Hu running outside the exchange zone on the second leg of the relay.

 Prior to Friday, the Sprint Medley Relay School Record was 1:43.49 (2009), and was held by Northside Alumni legends Wesley Laytham, Hunter Speese, Albert Lin, and Neal Capapas.

 In the Sprint Medley Relay, Northside Sophomore Philip Wdowiak ran an impressive 100m split of 11.91, and then made a perfect exchange to Sophomore Steven Kataba. Northside Sophomore Steven Kataba ran an outstanding 100m split of 11.82, and then a nice exchange to Junior Gabe Jiminez-Ekhman. Gabe Jiminez-Ekhman ran an outstanding 200m split of 25.29, and then made a perfect exchange to Junior Tom Frejowski. Tom Frejowski anchored the Mustangs with a 52.75 400m split to BREAK THE SCHOOL RECORD with an official time of 1:42.00. Philip Wdowiak, Steven Kataba, Gabe Jiminez-Ekhman, and Tom Frejowski will be honored in practice and receive Watermelons for breaking the school record! Philip Wdowiak, Steven Kataba, Gabe Jiminez-Ekhman, and Tom Frejowski also received RIBBONS for finishing in sixth place overall. Deerfield finished in seventh place with an official time of 1:42.70. Stevenson finished in eighth place with an official time of 1:43.70. Lake Zurich finished in ninth place with an official time of 1:44.80. Loyola Academy finished in tenth place with an official time of 1:44.90. Waukegan finished in eleventh place with an official time of 1:53.40.

 In the 4x1600m Relay, Northside Captain Malcolm Grba ran 400m splits of 68, 72 (2:20 800m split), 72 (3:32 1200m split), and then ran the final 400m in 73 seconds for an outstanding 1600m split of 4:45.23, and then made a perfect exchange to Senior Simon Kafka. Simon Kafka ran 400m splits of 67, 72 (2:19 800m split), 75 (3:34 1200m split), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 71 seconds for a personal best 1600m split of 4:45.55, and then made a perfect exchange to Junior Adrian Black. Adrian Black ran 400m splits of 70, 74 (2:24 800m split), 77 (3:41 1200m), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 71 seconds for a personal best 1600m split of 4:52.58, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Danny Rosen. Danny Rosen passed Loyola, Lake Forest, and Highland Park to put the Mustangs in THIRD place by running 400m splits of 67, 72 (2:19 800m split), 75 (3:34 1200m split), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE split of 65 seconds for an outstanding 1600m split of 4:39.91 for an official time of 19:03.70. Northside came within eight seconds (18:55.40) of the school record. Malcolm Grba, Simon Kafka, Adrian Black, and Danny Rosen were awarded MEDALS for finishing in THIRD place overall. Highland Park finished in fourth place with an official time of 19:14.70. Lake Forest finished in fifth place with an official time of 19:16.30. Loyola Academy finished in sixth place with an official time of 19:16.70. Stevenson finished in seventh place with an official time of 19:23.00. Deerfield finished in eighth place with an official time of 19:34.10. Glenbrook South finished in ninth place with an official time of 19:49.80. Glenbrook North finished in tenth place with an official time of 20:17.20.

 In the 4x200m Relay, Northside finished in tenth place with an official time of 1:39.30. Northside Sophomore Keith Jones ran a 24.15 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Brandon Banas ran a 26.07 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Philip Wdowiak ran a 24.00 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Junior Gabe Jiminez-Ekhman anchored the Mustangs to tenth place with a 24.65 200m split for an official time of 1:39.30. Northside was within 2.80 seconds (1:36.50) of the school record.

 Prior to Friday, the 4x110m Low Hurdle Shuttle Relay School Record was 1:06.00 (2013), and was held by Lucien Fitzpatrick, Xavier Sigelko, Justin Washington, and Walter Johnson-Geis.

 In the 4x110m Low Hurdle Shuttle Relay, Northside Senior Lucien Fitzpatrick hurdled a 14.48 110m split, and then tagged Junior Porter Abbey. Porter Abbey hurdled a 15.42 110m split, and then tagged Junior Matt Osborne. Matt Osborne hurdled a 15.56 110m split, and then tagged Sophomore Garret Barch. Garret Barch anchored the Mustangs to seventh place with a 15.88 110m split to BREAK THE SCHOOL RECORD BY 4.3 SECONDS with an official time of 1:01.70. Lucien Fitzpatrick, Porter Abbey, Matt Osborne, and Garret Barch will be honored in practice and receive Watermelons for breaking the school record!

 In the Thrower's 4x100m Relay, Northside was forced to scratch the relay due to Senior Henry Lothschutz leaving the meet early.

 In the 4x400m Relay, Northside featured three distance runners, and one sprinter. Northside Junior Malcolm Grba ran a 400m split of 53.69, and made a nice exchange to Senior Simon Kafka. Simon Kafka ran a 400m split of 54.35, and made a perfect exchange to Sophomore Danny Rosen. Danny Rosen ran a personal best 400m split of 53.99, and made a perfect exchange to Junior Tom Frejowski. Tom Frejowski anchored the Mustangs to sixth place with a 53.10 400m split for an official time of 3:35.70. Malcolm Grba, Simon Kafka, Danny Rosen, and Tom Frejowski were awarded RIBBONS for finishing in sixth place. Stevenson finished in seventh place with an official time of 3:36.00. Lake Zurich finished in eighth place with an official time of 3:38.70. Lake Forest finished in ninth place with an official time of 3:45.70. Loyola Academy finished in tenth place with an official time of 3:49.10.
