12 Northside athletes qualify for CPS City Championships!!!

On Wednesday, May 2, 2007, the Northside College Prep Mens Track & Field Team traveled to Hanson Stadium on the corner of Fullerton and Central in Chicago, Illinois for the CPS Varsity Qualifying meet. The Top 12 Distance event athletes, Top 12 Field event athletes, and Top 8 Sprinting event athletes in Chicago qualify for the Varsity City Championships. In 2006, only three Northside athletes qualified for the Varsity City Championships. On Wednesday, May 2, 2007, TWELVE Northside Athletes QUALIFIED for the Varsity City Championships!!! In the Long Jump, Albert Lin jumped 17'4. In the Triple Jump, Eric Nelson QUALIFED for City Championships with a jump of 38'1.75. Albert Lin jumped 36'7. In the High Jump, Eric Nelson QUALIFED for City Championships with a jump of 5'6. Wemi Jemine QUALIFED for City Championships with a jump of 5'4. The high jump competition stopped once 18 of the 30 jumpers were elminated to reach a field of 12 for the City Championships. In the Discus, Eric Nelson threw 84'01. Robert Garcia threw 81'01. In the Shot Put, Eric Nelson threw 36'7. In the 200m Preliminaries, Geoff Edwards qualifed for the Semi-Finals with a time of 24.43. Jose Choto ran an outstanding time of 25.85. In the 4x800m Relay, John Holler ran a 2:12.76 800m split on the first leg of the relay and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Simon Vecchioni. Simon Vecchioni ran a 2:22 800m split on the second leg of the relay and made a nice exchange to Junior Harold Jaffe. Harold Jaffe ran a 2:28 800m split on the third leg of the relay. Freshman Cuitlahuac Pineda anchored the Mustangs with a 2:25 800m split, for a total time of 9:27.44 to QUALIFY for the City Championships. Harold Jaffe will not be able to participate in the City Championships due to the SAT on Saturday, and an alternate will run in his place. Harold Jaffe is also being honored on Friday afternoon at the Chicago Board of Education chambers for placing in the top 12 of all high school students who participated in the CPS Latin Olympics. In the 4x100m Relay, Hunter Speese ran a 11.87 100m split on the first leg of the relay. Erik Flores ran a 13.13 100m split on the second leg of the relay. Freshman Neal Capapas ran a 12.27 100m split on the third leg of the Relay. Jose Choto ran a 12.45 100m split on the anchor leg of the Relay, for a total time of 49.79. In the 110m Hurdles, Albert Lin BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a time of 19.90. Santino Merino ran a time of 21.34. In the 800m run, John Holler QUALIFIED for City Championships with a 2:16.34. Simon Vecchioni ran a time of 2:25.34. In the 4x200m Relay, Hunter Speese ran a 25.34 200m split on the first leg of the relay. Santino Merino ran 26.71 200m split on the second leg of the relay. Freshman Neal Capapas ran a 26.29 200m split on the third leg of the relay. Jose Choto ran a 26.00 200m split on the third leg of the relay for a time of 1:44.34. In the 400m Dash, Geoff Edwards ran a time of 56.34. Erik Flores ran a time of 59.93. In the 300m Low Hurdles, Santino Merino WON his heat with a time of 52.48. In the 1600m run, Jonathan Kittaka QUALIFED for City Championships with a time of 4:57 (69/2:22/3:41/4:57). Preston Buehrer also QUALIFED for City Championships with a time of 5:01 (68/2:23/3:43/5:01). Buehrer was followed by Lake View's Alex Agafonov who qualified with an outstanding time of 5:03.85. Whitney Young's Jesse Lopez also qualified with an outstanding time of 5:04.26. Lincoln Park's Henry Mattingly also qualified with an outstanding time of 5:05.00. Jonathan Kittaka and Preston Buehrer are both being honored on Friday afternoon at the Chicago Board of Education chambers for also placing in the top 12 of all high school students who participated in the CPS Latin Olympics. In the 200m Dash Semi-Finals, Geoff Edwards ran an outstanding time of 24.42. In the 4x400, Erik Flores, Neal Capapas, John Holler and Simon Vecchioni combined for a total time of 4:00.55.
