Mac Melto WINS 55m! 6.30! Melto WINS 400m with 50.60!! 4x800m 8:38!! Brennan 4:52! Rufino WINS 3200! Josh Williams WINS Triple Jump! 4x400 WINS!

 On Friday, March 2, 2012, the Northside Varsity Men traveled to Henry Crown Field house at the University of Chicago for the University High Indoor Classic. Individual points and relays were scored on the following point scale: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

 Henry Crown Field house featured an athlete friendly atmosphere, upper deck seating, and the best 200m Indoor Track in Chicago. Henry Crown Field house has been the host to numerous National meets, and local Championship meets as well. The Varsity letter was invented in the1890s by Amos Alonzo Stagg as he was sitting on the entrance steps to Henry Crown Field house. The main wall of the stadium contains a list of field house records, which include several Olympians. The first Heisman Trophy winner (1935), Jay Berwanger is still listed on the all time list for Henry Crown Field house for the 55m dash. Henry Crown Field house is a Chicago landmark that is rich in Track & Field history.

 The University High Indoor Classic at Henry Crown Field house, featured North Shore Country Day, St. Ignatius, Northside College Prep, Lombard Montini, Chicago Latin, and host University High. A special thanks to University High Head Coach Bud James and staff for hosting an outstanding meet.

 A year ago, Northside scored only 84 points (March 4, 2011) at the Univeristy High Indoor Classic. On Friday, March 2, 2012, the Northside Varsity Men scored 126.50 points!

 In the Long Jump, Northside Sophomore Lucien Fitzpatrick jumped a personal best 18'4.25 to place third overall. Montini Jeremy Pope completed the scoring by placing eighth overall with a jump of 16'03.50. Northside Freshman Matt Osborne jumped an outstanding 15'4.75. Northside Freshman Ari Perlmutter jumped a personal best 11'7.50. Northside Freshman Porter Abbey jumped 10'06.50. Northside Senior Josh Williams scratched on all three attempts.

 In the Triple Jump, Northside Senior Josh Williams WON it with an outstanding jump of 39'06.00. Northside Sophomore Lucien Fitzpatrick jumped a personal best 34'07.00 to place fourth overall. Northside Sophomore Karl Heinz completed the scoring by placing eighth overall with a personal best jump of 32'10.50.  Northside Sophomore Louis Koll jumped an outstanding 32'06.50. Northside Freshman Porter Abbey jumped a personal best 31'04.25.

 In 2011, Northside won the Indoor City Title in the 4x800m relay with an 8:47.46. In 2012, Northside went into the meet leading their IHSA Sectional with a 9:07.0. Northside smashed both marks on Friday with a very impressive 8:38.0!

 In the Varsity "A" 4x800m Relay, Northside Senior Dan Graham ran the first leg of the relay with an 800m split of 2:07, and made a perfect exchange to Senior Ezra Edgerton. Ezra Edgerton ran the second leg of the relay with a 2:07 800m split, and made a nice exchange to Junior Patrick Brennan. Patrick Brennan ran the third leg of the relay with a 2:10 800m split, and made a nice exchange to Senior Pat Duffy. Captain Pat Duffy anchored the Mustangs to SECOND place overall with a 2:14 800m split for an official time of 8:38.0!

 Northside is now within 10 seconds of the school record and the automatic qualifying time (8:28.0) for the 4x800m Relay for the Class 2A Illinois Prep Top Times!! The Mustangs will attempt to break both marks at the Chicago Public League Championships on Sunday, March 18, 2012. 

 In the Varsity "B" 4x800m Relay, Northside Sophomore Robert Szmurlo ran the first leg of the relay with an 800m split of 2:18, and made a perfect exchange to Sophomore Joel Deleon. Joel Deleon ran the second leg of the relay with a 2:23 800m split, and made a perfect exchange to Senior Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith ran the third leg of the relay with a 2:22 800m split, and made a nice exchange to Junior Raymond Siddiqi. Raymond Siddiqi anchored the Mustangs to FOURTH place overall with a 2:25 800m split for an official time of 9:28.0.

 In the Varsity "A" 4x200m Relay, Northside Freshman Tom Frejowski ran a 200m split of 25.11 on the first leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Freshman Porter Abbey. Porter Abbey ran a 200m split of 27.34 on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Freshman Matt Osborne. Matt Osborne ran a 200m split of 27.41 on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Freshman Ari Perlmutter. Ari Perlmutter anchored the Mustangs to THIRD place overall with a 27.15 200m split for an official time of 1:47.40.

 In the Varsity "B" 4x200m Relay, Northside Sophomore Walter Johnson-Geis ran a 200m split of 27.48 on the first leg of the relay, and made a good exchange to Sophomore Jay Yu. Jay Yu ran a 26.34 200m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Louie Koll. Louie Koll ran a 27.63 200m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Sophomore Karl Heinz. Karl Heinz anchored the Mustangs to first place in their heat, and fifth overall with a 27.31 200m split for an official time of 1:49.20.

 In the 3200m run, Northside Sophomore Cesar Rufino WON it with an outstanding time of 11:09.00. Cesar Rufino dropped 22 seconds from the Lonnell Poole Invitational (11:31.23). Rufino ran the first mile in 5:26, and then ran the final mile in 5:43 for an outstanding time of 11:09. Northside Sophomore Nate Mendez, in his first Varsity race, placed third overall, with a personal best time of 11:17.00. Nate Mendez ran the first mile 5:26, and then ran the final mile in 5:51 for a personal best time of 11:17. Northside Junior Brendan Kelly finished in seventh place overall with an outstanding time of 12:21.00. Brendan Kelly ran the first mile in 5:45, and then ran the final mile in 6:36 for an outstanding time of 12:21. Northside Junior Nick Hill completed the scoring by placing eighth overall with an official time of 12:27. Nick Hill ran the first mile in 6:00, and then ran the final mile in 6:27 for an outstanding time of 12:27. Northside Freshman Declan Galleher ran a personal best time of 15:38. Declan Galleher ran the first mile in 7:49, and then ran the final mile in an EVEN split of 7:49 for a personal best time of 15:38.

 In the 55m High Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Lucien Fitzpatrick placed third overall with an outstanding time of 8.70. Northside Freshman Matt Osborne finished in tenth place overall with a personal best time of 10.40. Northside Sophomore Walter Johnson-Geis finished in 12th place overall with an outstanding time of 11.20. Northside Sophomore Joel Deleon finished in 13th place overall with a personal best time of 11.50. Northside Freshman Ari Perlmutter finished in 15th place overall with an outstanding time of 12.20. Northside Sophomore Patrick Andrade finished in 16th place overall with a personal best time of 12.80.

  Jay Berwanger (1935), the first Heisman trophy winner, is still listed on the All Time list at Henry Crown Field House for the 55m dash. It takes a 6.61 to pass him on the list. Berwanger was in the 1936 Olympic Trials with among others, Jesse Owens. Berwanger was also the number one draft pick in the NFL in 1935, and turned down an offer from the Chicago Bears to play professional football to pursue the Olympic decathlon. Northside had two athletes pass him in the 55m dash on Friday.

 In the 55m Dash, Northside Senior Mac Melto WON it with a personal best time of 6.30. Northside Junior Nathaniel Agharese won his heat, and finished second overall with a personal best time of 6.60. Northside Freshman Tom Frejowski placed third in his heat, and sixth overall with a personal best time of 7.10. Northside Sophomore Jay Yu ran a personal best time of 7.50. Northside Sophomore Karl Heinz ran a personal best time of 7.70. Northside Junior Imran Heluk Senlik did not show up to the meet.

 In the 800m run, Northside Freshman Max McCoy tied for seventh place with a personal best time of 2:29.00. Northside Freshman Connor Fulton ran an outstanding time of 2:33.00. Northside Sophomore Louis Koll ran a personal best time of 2:36.00. Northside Sophomore Henry Lothschutz ran a personal best time of 2:40.00. Northside Freshman Calvin Kuhnen ran a personal best time of 2:42.00. Northside Sophomore Andrew Donchak dropped 13 seconds for a personal best time of 2:45.00.

 In the 400m Dash, Northside Senior Mac Melto WON it with an outstanding time of 50.60. It was the fastest time in the Chicago Public League, and the third fastest indoor time in the entire State of Illinois this year! Northside Senior Ezra Edgerton finished in third place overall with a personal best time of 55.20. Northside Freshman Tom Frejowski dropped two seconds and finished in fourth place overall with a personal best time of 55.50.

 In the 1600m run, Northside Junior Patrick Brennan finished in second place with an outstanding time of 4:52.0. Brennan ran the first 800m in 2:25, and then ran the final 800m in 2:27 for an oustanding time of 4:52. Northside Junior Raymond Siddiqi finished in seventh place overall with a personal best time of 5:18.60. Raymond Siddiqi dropped 16 seconds off his best time (5:34)! Northside Freshman Adrian Black finished in ninth place and dropped 19 seconds (5:40) for a personal best time of 5:21.0. Adrian Black ran the first 800m in 2:41, and then ran the final 800m in a NEGATIVE split of 2:40 for a personal best time of 5:21.0. Northside Sophomore Cesar Rufino ran an outstanding time of 5:22.00. Cesar Rufino ran the first 800m 2:30, and then ran the final 800m in 2:52 for an outstanding time of 5:22.0. Northside Senior Joseph Smith won the second heat with a personal best time of 5:25.00. Northside Sophomore Robert Szmurlo dropped 6 seconds (5:34) for a personal best time of 5:28.00. Robert Szmurlo ran the first 800m in 2:32 and then ran the final 800m in 2:56 for a personal best time of 5:28.00. Northside Freshman Jack O'Donnell dropped 5 seconds for a personal best time of 5:46.00. Northside Sophomore Cristian Hernandez ran a personal best time of 5:55.00.

 In the 200m Dash, Northside Sophomore Jay Yu placed seventh overall with an outstanding time of 27.40. Northside Freshman Connor Fulton ran an outstanding time of 28.60. Northside Freshman Harry Winters ran a personal best time of 29.60.

 In the Varsity 4x400m "A" Relay, Northside Senior Ezra Edgerton opened up a lead with a 55.0 400m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Junior Josh Williams. Josh Williams increased the lead with a 57.30 400m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Louie Koll. Louie Koll ran a 60.90 400m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Senior Mac Melto. Mac Melto cruised to FIRST place with a 56.20 400m split for an official time of 3:49.00. St. Ignatius finished in second place with an official time of 3:57.00. Lombard Montini finished in third place with an official time of 4:09.00 The Northside Varsity 4x400m "B" Relay, finished in fourth place with an official time of 4:11.00. Northside Freshman Porter Abbey ran a 61.61 400m split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Matt Osborne ran a 63.09 400m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Max McCoy ran a 64.46 400m split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Ari Perlmutter anchored the Mustangs to fourth place with a 61.94 400m split for an official time of 4:11.00. University High finished in fifth place with an official time of 4:14.00. St. Ignatius "B" Relay finished in sixth place with an official time of 4:30.00.

 The Northside Track & Field Team arrived back at Northside at 11:30 pm. Northside jumpers Louie Koll, Porter Abbey, Ari Perlmutter, Joel Deleon, Cristian Hernandez, Veronica Schwartz, Katie O'Rourke, and Eleanor Glockner were up a dawn on Saturday morning, training in the Gymnasium for High Jump for 2.5 hours with Northside Alumni legend Eric Nelson. It was an incredible experience for the Northside jumpers, and the athletes have perfected their high jump approach with exact measurements for the Bison Indoor Classic on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. 

 St. Ignatius won the meet with 164 points. Northside College Prep finished in SECOND place with 126.50 points, and posted victories over: 3. Lombard Montini (79 points), 4. University High (63.50 points), and 5. North Shore Country Day (5 points). The Northside Varsity Men had a record of 3-1 on the day, and now have a season record of 27-8. The Northside Varsity Track & Field Team is also undefeated in Class 2A.
