On Wednesday, March 24, 2010, the Northside College Prep Sophomore-Freshman Boys Track & Field Team traveled to Ted Haydon Stadium at the University of Chicago for the first Outdoor Track & Field meet of the season. The 3rd Annual Sophomore-Freshman Urban Prep Relays Meet is organized by Urban Prep Head Boys Track & Field Coach Derrick Brooms. Urban Prep recently won the Chicago Public League Indoor Track & Field Title, and broke two school records at Urban Prep Relays.

Derrick Brooms is a University of Chicago Alumni, and a member of the University of Chicago Athletic Hall of Fame. Derrick Brooms was the 1996 Amos Alonzo Stagg Medal receipient, and was a two-time UAA Sprint Champion in indoor and outdoor Track & Field. He was also an NCAA All-American, and two time UAA Player of the year as a wide receiver and kick-off returner for the Maroons from 1992-1995. In 1995, Derrick Brooms led the nation with a 35.2 yard kickoff return average as he helped lead Chicago to an 8-2 record. Many athletes that played against him, have said that Brooms was so fast that he could not be tackled, and literaly controlled the outcome of a game. In the winter of 2009, Derrick Brooms was the guest of honor of a Northside sprint coaching staff meeting.

On Wednesday, Brooms returned to the University of Chicago to host the best Sophomore-Freshman Relay Meet in Chicago. The meet featured host Urban Prep, Northside College Prep, St. Rita, Perspectives-Calumet, Gordon Tech, Leo, and Urban Prep East Garfield. Urban Prep East Garfield features former Northside sprints coach legend Kwaku Attoh. Kwaku Attoh began teaching Physical Education at Urban Prep East Garfield in August 2009. Urban Prep East Garfield is all Freshman (120 students), and they were very impressive in the meet, and will be coming to the Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic on April 24, 2010.

The Urban Prep Relays had non-stop action, and a unique relay format, in which every event, including field events were scored as a Relay. The total distance jumped or thrown by a Team (Top 2 athletes) determined the winner of each field event. The total time ran by a Team (Top 2 athletes) determined the winner of the distance events (3200m run and Mile). The athletes also had the priviledge of running on the nicest Outdoor Track in Chicago. The University of Chicago's Outdoor Track at Ted Haydon Stadium is the best outdoor track in Chicago.

Medals were awarded to the top 3 Relays in each event, and Ribbons were awarded for fourth through fifth place. The Point scale for all events was 10-8-6-4-2-1. Every point scored was vital to the outcome of the meet.
