Northside Sophomore Osazee Osaghee finishes in 2nd place in the 200m dash! Alex Ortiz BREAKS the ten minutes barrier in the 3200m run!
On Saturday, April 8, 2017, the Northside Varsity Men traveled to Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois for the 46th Annual Paul Gans Invitational. Paul Gans was an outstanding three sports athlete, who finished 2nd in STATE in the 200m Dash. He also held the school records for Niles West in the 100m, 200m, 400m and Long Jump. The Paul Gans Invitational has been held since 1970.
The Paul Gans Invitational is a highly competive meet. Paul Gans would have been proud of Northside Sophomore Osazee Osaghae's performance in the 200m Dash on Saturday.
Prior to Saturday, the fastest Sophomore 200m Dash times by Northside athletes were Guy Lohoua (23.37, 2016), Nathaniel Agharese (23.52, 2011), and Mac Melto (24.02, 2010).
Priot to Saturday, the fastest 200m Dash times in Northside history were Alumni legends Mac Melto (21.80, 2012), Nathaniel Agharese (22.80, 2012), and Keith Jones (22.80, 2016).
In the Varsity 200m Dash Finals, Northside Sophomore Osazee Osaghae finished in SECOND place with a PERSONAL BEST time of 22.49. As a Freshman, Osazee Osaghae qualified for the IHSA State Track and Field Championships in 2016 in the 100m Dash. Osazee Osaghae is now within 0.23 of a second of the Class 3A IHSA State qualifying automatic time (22.26) in the 200m dash! Osazee Osaghae was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in second place overall. It was the second fastest 200m dash time in Northside history!
In the Varsity 100m Dash Finals, Northside Sophomore Osazee Osaghae finished in sixth place to complete the scoring with a PERSONAL BEST time of 11.24. Osazee Osaghae dropped 0.12 of a second (11.36, 2016 IHSA State Championships) with a personal best time of 11.24. Osazee Osaghae was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in sixth place overall.
Osazee Osaghae also anchored the Northside 4x200m Relay to Fifth place with an official time of 1:37.93. In the 4x200m Relay, Northside Junior Nick Brown ran an impressive 200m split of 24.22 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Senior Jay Borgwardt ran an outstanding 200m split of 25.14 on the second leg of the relay. Northside Junior Daniel Agbeo ran an outstanding 200m split of 25.42 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Osazee Osaghae anchored the Northside Varsity to fifth place with an impressive 22.50 200m split for an official time of 1:37.93. Nick Brown, Jay Borgwardt, Daniel Agbeo, and Osazee Osaghae were awarded MEDALS for finishing in fifth place overall.
In the Varsity 3200m run, Northside Senior Alex Ortiz dropped 14.21 seconds (10:11.75) to finish in SECOND place with a PERSONAL BEST time of 9:57.54. Alex Ortiz was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in second place overall.
The Northside Varsity Men scored 19 points, and posted victories over University High (12 points), Mather (10 points), and Northridge Prep (7 points).
