Danny Rosen, Matthew Gomez, Max McCoy, and Simon Kafka WIN Indoor City 4x800m Relay Title!

Posted by Jon Gordon on Mar 22 2014 at 05:00PM PDT

In the 4x800m Relay, Whitney Young featured Sophomore Jason Sebek, and Freshman Phenoms Evan Radomski and Keduse Worku. Mather also had a very strong team, with Matthew Carter and Claudio Flores. Lincoln Park featured Raymond Jurkiewicz and Andrew Dillingham, among others, on their 4x800m Relay roster. Northside had the fastest time in the field during the indoor season (8:35.60), but would be without Junior Malcolm Grba (2:00.52), and Junior Tom Frejowski (2:13.60). Grba was scheduled to race in the open 800m and Frejowski was scheduled to race in the open 400m at the Indoor City Championships.

Sophomore Danny Rosen ran the first leg of the 4x800m Relay for Northside. Danny Rosen ran the first 200m in 29 seconds, and then ran the next 200m in 30 seconds for a 400m split of 59 seconds. Danny Rosen then ran the next 200m in 33 seconds for a 600m split of 1:32. Danny Rosen ran the final 200m in a NEGATIVE split of 32 seconds for an 800m split of 2:04.04 (59 / 65 400m splits), and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Matthew Gomez.

Northside had the lead after the first leg of the relay, but both Mather and Whitney Young made strong moves on the second leg of the relay. Sophomore Matthew Gomez ran the first 200m in 31 seconds, and then ran the next 200m in 33 seconds for a 400m split of 64 seconds. At the 600m mark, Mather and Whitney Young both made an exchange 200m before the 800m mark, and were disqualified. Northside Assistant Coach Patrick O'Connor yelled to Matthew Gomez to remind him that he had one lap to go, and held up his hand with the numer of laps remaining for each Northside runner at all times during the race. Matthew Gomez ran a 200m split of 38 seconds for a 600m split of 1:42. Matthew Gomez then ran the final 200m in a NEGATIVE split of 34 seconds for an 800m split of 2:16.52 (64 / 72 400m splits), and made a perfect exchange to Junior Max McCoy.

After the second leg of the relay, Northside was in first place, and Lincoln Park was in second place. Nobody in the meet had an anchor as fast and as strong as Senior Simon Kafka. If Max McCoy could preserve the lead, the Mustangs were going to win the indoor city title in the 4x800m Relay.

Northside Junior Max McCoy came through for the TEAM, and ran the first 200m in 33 seconds, and then ran the next 200m in 36 seconds for a 400m split of 69 seconds. Max McCoy then ran the next 200m in 37 seconds for a 600m split of 1:46. Max McCoy then ran the final 200m in a NEGATIVE split of 34 seconds for an 800m split of 2:20.88 (69, 71 400m splits), and made a perfect exchange, with a commanding lead to Senior Simon Kafka.

Northside Senior Simon Kafka ran the first 200m in 31 seconds, and then ran the next 200m in 33 seconds for a 400m split of 64 seconds. Simon Kafka was running in heavy traffic and was forced to use the outside lanes because he was lapping the entire field. Simon Kafka ran the next 200m in 33 seconds for a 600m split of 1:37. Simon Kafka then ran the final 200m in a NEGATIVE split of 32 seconds to anchor the Mustangs to VICTORY with an 800m split of 2:09.20 for an official time of 8:51.40.

Lincoln Park finished in second place with an outstanding time of 9:23.22. Morgan Park finished in third place with an official time of 9:30.96. Brooks finished in fourth place with an official time of 9:51.52. Dunbar finished in fifth place with an official time of 10:13.02. Kenwood finished in sixth place to complete the scoring with an official time of 10:13.42.
