Danny Rosen, Max McCoy, Matthew Gomez, and Tom Frejowski WIN 4x800m Relay!

Posted by Jon Gordon on Feb 14 2014 at 04:00PM PST

Northside Senior Simon Kafka returned to practice on Friday, after a three days college visit with the Kalamazoo College Cross Country Team. Kafka enjoyed the visit, but unfortunately returned home ill from the trip, and did not show up to the meet on Saturday.

In the first 4x800m Relay of the season, Northside needed to make a substitution for Simon Kafka. Although your not allowed to make substitutions in individual events, you are allowed to make a substitution on the day of the meet in a Relay.

Northside Junior Max McCoy was selected as the substitution for the relay after impressing the coaching staff in the Mustangs most recent workout. The Northside Middle distance runners had an imporant practice scheduled on Abe Lincoln's Birthday at 2 pm on an Indoor 400m Track. Max McCoy couldn't make it to the practice because of an afternoon conflict, and didn't want to miss a day of training. Max McCoy contacted the coaching staff in advance to do an alternative hill workout on the same day at dawn with the coaching staff at Northside. McCoy had a great practice and was scheduled to compete in the open 800m on Saturday.

Max McCoy was notified upon arrival to the meet that he would be running in the 4x800m Relay in addition to the open 800m run, and he came through big for the TEAM.

In the 4x800m Relay, Northside Sophomore Danny Rosen ran the first 200m in 30 seconds, and then ran the next 200m in 32 seconds for a 400m split of 62 seconds. Danny Rosen then ran the next 200m in 34 seconds for a 600m split of 1:36. Danny Rosen then ran the final 200m of the first leg of the 4x800m Relay in 31.79 seconds for an 800m split of 2:07.79, and made a nice exchange to Junior Max McCoy. Max McCoy ran the first 200m in 30 seconds, and then ran the next 200m in 33 seconds for a 400m split of 63 seconds. Max McCoy then ran the next 200m in 35 seconds for a 600m split of 1:38. Max McCoy then ran the final 200m of the second leg of the 4x800m Relay in 37.62 seconds for a PERSONAL BEST 800m split of 2:15.62, and made a perfect exchange to Sophomore Matthew Gomez. Matthew Gomez ran the first 200m in 29 seconds, and then ran the next 200m in 34 seconds for a 400m split of 63 seconds. Matthew Gomez then ran the next 200m in 38 seconds for a 600m split of 1:41. Matthew Gomez then ran the final 200m of the third leg of the 4x800m Relay in 32.04 seconds for an 800m split of 2:13.04, and made a nice exchange to Junior Tom Frejowski. At the final exchange, Northside had a lead on both St. Ignatius and Whitney Young. However, there was still one more Team (Walter Payton) to catch. Tom Frejowski closed the gap by running the first 200m in 29 seconds, and then running the next 200m in 33 seconds for a 400m split of 62 seconds. Tom Frejowski then caught Walter Payton by running the next 200m in 36 seconds for a 600m split of 1:38. Tom Frejowski then anchored Northside to Victory by running the final 200m in 35.60 seconds for an 800m split of 2:13.60 and an official time of 8:50.05. Walter Payton finished in second place with an official time of 8:50.93. St. Ignatius finished in third place with an official time of 9:13.38. Whitney Young finished in fourth place with an official time of 9:38.61.
