WOW! Northside upsets defending State Champions Chicago Leo High School to WIN the Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic! 198.00 to 167.00 points!!

On Tuesday, March 26, 2013, the Northside College Prep Varsity Men traveled to Hanson Stadium in Chicago, Illinois for the 2013 Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic.

 The meet featured  Kelvyn Park, Taft, Solorio Academy, Von Steuben, Chicago Leo High School (defending State Track & Field Champions), Henry Ford Power House, and host Northside College Prep.

 The meet provided each Team with the opportunity to enter nine athletes in every event! The meet was a huge success, and there is currently a 20 Teams waiting list for entry into the 2014 Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic!

 Plaques were awarded to the winner of the High Jump in honor of Northside Alumni Eric Nelson, the winner of the 800m run in honor of Northside Alumni Wesley Laytham, the winner of the Long Jump in honor of Northside Alumni Josh Williams, the winner of the 400m run in honor of Northside Alumni Mac Melto, and the winners of the 4x800m Relay in honor of Patrick Brennan, and Northside Alumni Dan Graham, Pat Duffy, and Ezra Edgerton.

 Once a Northside athlete holds the school record and has qualified for the IHSA State Track & Field Championships, an event in the Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic is named after the athlete, beginning the following year.

  Hanson Stadium was spectacular, with a seating capacity of 10,000, unlimited Track & Field equipment, and an outstanding sound system, it is one of the best venues in Chicago for Track & Field.

 The 2013 Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic provided a very special Track & Field experience for all participants.

 Engraved Medals were awarded to the Top 3 Athletes in each event. Ribbons were awarded for places fourth through eighth.   

 Goody bags were given to all participants on every team, after they completed their first event of the day. A special thanks to the Fitzpatrick Family, Agharese Family, O'Conor Family, and Brennan Family for preparing Goody bags for all participants in the 2013 Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic.

 A special thanks to Northside parent John Kuhnen for serving as the clerk of the course, and for checking in thousands of athletes, and providing them with hip numbers for each event.

  The Team would also like to thank Northside Throws Coach Carmen Acevedo for officiating the Shot Put, Northside Jumps Coach Ed Wallace for officiating the Long Jump and Triple Jump, Northside Coach Mark Morgan for serving as Head Clerk, and for organizing the Hurdles throughout the meet, Northside Coach Dan Carlson for providing the athletes with splits for every event.

Northside would also like to thank IHSA Officials Michael Powers, and Bernie Lewis.

 A special thanks to Alumni Ezra Edgerton, Pat Duffy, Josh Williams, and the Melto Family for supporting the Team, and traveling great distances during Spring Break to attend the 2013 Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic.

The meet was scored on the following scale for individual events and relays: 10-8-6-5-4-3-2-1.

 The Northside Varsity Men WON the 2013 Eric Nelson Track & Field Classic with a score of 198 points, and posted victories over: 2. Leo High School (167.00 points), 3. Taft (75 Points), 4. Von Stuben (71 points), 5. Solorio Academy (57 points), 6. Henry Ford Powerhouse (49 points), and 7. Kelvyn Park (17 points). 

 Northside started the Outdoor Track & Field season with a record of 6-0! Northside has a record 17-1 in their last two meets (Eric Nelson Classic and Indoor City Championships), and a season record of 83-26.

 In the Shot Put, Chicago Leo Terron Bell won it with a throw of 42'11.50. Chicago Leo Anthony Anderson finished in second place with a throw of 35'10.50. Chicago Leo Christopher Winters finished in third place with a throw of 34'00.50. Chicago Leo Clifton Thurmon finished in fourth place with a throw of 32'8.00. Solorio Academy Josue Cahue finished in fifth place with a throw of 32'7. Chicago Leo Tshawn Guyton finished in sixth place with a throw of 30'10. Henry Ford High Power Armani Pratt finished in seventh place with a throw of 30'4.50. Northside Senior Kapil Garg finished in eighth place to complete the scoring with a throw of 28'9.

 In the Discus, Chicago Leo Terron Bell won it with a throw of 134'1. Chicago Leo Anthony Anderson finished in second place with a throw of 101'2. Since Eric Nelson graduated in 2009, Northside has not had an athlete throw a Discus over 95'0. That changed on Tuesday. Northside Sophomore Malcolm Grba finished in THIRD place in the Discus with a personal best throw of 96'2.50. Malcolm Grba was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in third place overall. Chicago Leo Christopher Winters finished in fourth place with a throw of 94'10. Northside Senior Kapil Garg finished in fifth place with a personal best throw of 81'8. Kapil Garg was awarded a Ribbon for finishing in fifth place. Von Stuben's William Pawelko finished in sixth place with a throw of 72'2. Chicago Leo Tyshawn Guyton finished in seventh place with a throw of 70'8.50. Chicago Leo Clifton Thurmon finished in eighth place to complete the scoring with a throw of 67'9.

 In the Josh Williams Long Jump, Von Stuben's Anthony Hudson won it with a jump of 19'8. Hudson was awarded a plaque for winning the Josh Williams Long Jump. Chicago Leo Joshua Wright finished in second place with a jump of 18'5. Northside Sophomore Matt Osborne finished in THIRD place with a personal best jump of 17'6. Matt Osborne was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in third place overall. Solorio Academy Lamont Smith finished in fourth place with a jump of 17'4. Taft's Nikolas Capello finished in fifth place with a jump of 16'10. Von Steuben's Stephen Schintgen finished in sixth place with a jump of 16'0. Henry Ford Power House Khalil Kelly finished in seventh place with a jump of 15'10. Northside Sophomore Alejandro Ballesteros finished in eighth place to complete the scoring with a personal best jump of 15'5. Ballesteros improved by over 2'0!! Northside Sophomore Porter Abbey made three outstanding attempts, but went over the foul line on all three attempts.

 In the Pole Vault, Northside Senior Spencer Parts won it with a vault of 6'6. Northside Sophomore Declan Galleher finished in second place with a personal best vault of 5'6. Northside Junior Jay Yu finished in third place with a personal best vault of 5'0. No other athletes cleared the opening height of 5'0. Spencer Parts, Declan Galleher, and Jay Yu were awarded Medals for finishing in the Top 3.

 In the Triple Jump, Chicago Leo Saheed Adewole won it with a jump of 38'5. Northside Sophomore Porter Abbey finished in SECOND place with a personal best jump of 38'2. Porter Abbey was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in second place overall. Northside Sophomore Matt Osborne finished in THIRD place with an outstanding jump of 34'1. Matt Osborne was awarded a MEDAL for finishing in third place overall. Chicago Leo Harvey Moss finished in fourth place with a jump of 32'5. Chicago Leo Shondell Thompson made three outstanding attempts, but went over the foul line on all three attempts.

 In the Eric Nelson High Jump, Von Stuben's Anthony Hudson won it with an outstanding jump of 5'8. Anthony Hudson was awarded a plaque for winning the Eric Nelson High Jump. Chicago Leo Russell Lamb finished in second place with a leap of 5'2. Chicago Leo Harvey Moss finished in third place with a jump of 4'10. Von Stuben's Christopher Wilson finished in fourth place with a jump of 4'10. Northside Junior Simon Kafka finished in fifth place with an outstanding jump of 4'8. Simon Kafka was awarded a Ribbon for finishing in fifth place overall. Northside Sophomore Alejandro Ballesteros finished in sixth place with a personal best jump of 4'8. Alejandro Ballesteros was awarded a Ribbon for finishing in sixth place overall. Solorio Academy KeJuan Thornton finished in seventh place with a jump of 4'6. Solorio Academy Lamont Smith finished in eighth place to complete the scoring with a jump of 4'4.

 After the Field Events, Leo High School, the defending State Track & Field Champions, led the meet with 95 points. Northside was in second place with 63 points. Von Stuben was in third place with 31 points. Solorio Academy was in fourth place with 12 points. Taft and Henry Ford Powerhouse High School were tied for fifth place with 4 points. Kelvyn Park was in seventh place with 0 points.
