Mac Melto BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD in the 200m Dash! Cooper Eben runs 9:58.80 3200m run! 8:36.18 4x800m Relay!!! 4x200m Relay Medals again!!

 On Saturday, April 10, 2010, the Northside Varsity Men traveled to Niles West High School in Skokie, Illinois for the 40th Annual Paul Gans Invitational. Paul Gans was an outstanding three sports athlete, who finished 2nd in State in the 200m Dash. He also held the school records for Niles West in the 100m, 200m, 400m and Long Jump. The Paul Gans Invitational has been held since 1970. Paul Gans would have been proud of the Mustangs performance on Saturday.

 The meet featured Fenwick, Northside College Prep, Yorkville, Plainfield East, Urbana, Rich Central, Metea Valley, Antioch, North Ridge Prep, Fenger, Huntley, Schurz, and host Niles West High School. Individual events and relays were scored 10-8-6-4-2-1. Medals were awarded to the top six individuals and relays.

 Niles West won the meet with 118 points. Huntley finished in second place with 105 points. Yorkville finished in third place with 71 points. Fenwick finished in fourth place with 58 points. Rich Central finished in fifth place with 53 points. Northside College Prep finished in sixth place with 46 points, and posted victories over: 7. Fenger 41 points, 8. Plainfield East 37 points, 9. Antioch 27 points, 10. Urbana 26 points, 11. Northridge Prep 4 points, and 12. Schurz 0 points. Metea Valley did not compete in the Varsity division.

  In the High Jump, Urbana's Johsnon won it with a jump of 6'0. There was a three way tie for second place, between Huntley's Hollinger, Northside Senior Hunter Speese, Fenwick's Fletcher. Hunter Speese jumped 5'2 to tie for second place. Hunter Speese took no further jumps after clearing 5'2, due to a tender hamstring after the 4x100m Relay. Hunter Speese was awarded a Medal for finishing in a second place tie. Northside Sophomore Mac Melto finished in third place with a jump of 5'2. Northside Sophomore Mac Melto took no further jumps after clearing 5'2, due to semi-finals in the 100m and 200m dash. Mac Melto was awarded a Medal for placing third overall.  

 In the Shot Put, Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon threw an outstanding 35'6.25. Northside Junior Mohammed Ahmed threw an outstanding 26'3.5. Northside Senior Neal Capapas threw a season best 24'9. Northside Junior Eduardo Herrera threw an outstanding 19'0.25.

 In the Discus, Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon threw an outstanding 86'1. Northside Junior Mohammed Ahmed threw 58'3. Northside Junior Hersh Perlmutter threw 57'2. Northside Junior Eduardo Herrera faulted on three attempts.  

 In the Long Jump, Northside Sophomore Josh Williams earned a Medal by placing 6th overall with an outstanding jump of 18'5. Northside Junior Nicco Simon jumped a personal best 16'8.5. 

 In the Triple Jump, Northside Sophomore Josh Williams earned a Medal by placing 5th overall with an outstanding jump of 37'4. Northside Junior Nicco Simon jumped a personal best 33'11.5. 

 Northside Sprints Coach Adrian Hunter, and the Northside sprinters had a big day at the Paul Gans Invitational.

 In the 100m Dash semi-finals, Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese DROPPED 0.78 of a second for a PERSONAL BEST time of 11.62. Northside Sophomore Mac Melto DROPPED 0.30 of a second from the Mather Invitational for a season best time of 11.64.

 In the 110m High Hurdles semi-finals, Northside Junior Hersh Perlmutter placed third in his heat to advance to the finals with an outstanding time of 16.44. Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon placed fourth in his heat to advance to the finals with a time of 20.01. Andrew Czyszczon would go on to drop over 2 seconds in the finals!

 In the 200m Dash semi-finals, Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese ran a PERSONAL BEST time of 23.88. Northside Sophomore Mac Melto BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a PERSONAL BEST time of 23.44. The record (23.60) was previously held by Santino Merino (currently runs for Oberlin College). Mac Melto will be honored in practice on Monday, with a Watermelon, for breaking a school record. Mac Melto will also receive a plaque for breaking the school record in the 200m Dash at the June 4, 2010 Track & Field banquet.

 Just seeing Mesimore, Duffy, Zuehlke, and Laytham warm-up for the 4x800m Relay created excitement in the air. The Northside Sophomore-Freshman Team lined the Track to make sure they had a good view of this race. The crowd in the stands could also sense that it was going to be a great relay, with impressive distance squads from Yorkville, Fenwick, Huntley, and Niles West in the meet. 

 The Northside distance runners had a quality week of training, including running hard intervals against the wind, in hail and rain at River Park Track. No one else was on the Track in those conditions. At the Paul Gans Invitational, the Northside distance runners would receive their first reward for their hard work.

 In the 4x800m Relay, Northside DROPPED 49 seconds from the Mather Invitational with a season best time of 8:36.18. It was also the fastest 4x800m Relay run in the CPS during the Outdoor season. Northside Junior Charlie Mesimore ran the first 400m of the relay in 62 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 67 seconds for an 800m split of 2:09.26. Northside Sophomore Pat Duffy ran the first 400m of the second leg of the 4x800m relay, in 65 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 69 seconds for an 800m split of 2:14.61. Pat Duffy made a nice exchange to Northside Junior Erik Zuehlke. Erik Zuehlke DROPPED 10 SECONDS off his PR, with a 2:09.27 800m split on the third leg of the relay. Erik Zuehlke ran the first 400m of the third leg of the 4x800m relay, in 61 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 68 seconds for an 800m split of 2:09.27. Northside was in third place when Northside Junior Wesley Laytham received the baton. Wesley Laytham ran school record pace the entire anchor leg of the 4x800m relay to pass Huntley and put the Mustangs into second place! Northside Captain Wesley Laytham ran the first 400m in 57 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 66 for a PERSONAL BEST 800m split of 2:03.04, to anchor the Mustangs to second place with a total time of 8:36.18. Charlie Mesimore, Pat Duffy, Erik Zuehlke, and Wesley Laytham were awarded Medals for placing second overall!

 In the 4x100m Relay, Northside Senior Hunter Speese hurt his hamstring on the anchor leg of the relay, taking the Mustangs out of medal contention. Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese, Senior Kevin Jaburek, Senior Neal Capapas, and Senior Hunter Speese still combined for a time of 48.80.

 In the 3200m Run, Northside Senior Cooper Eben DROPPED 13 SECONDS and BROKE THE TEN MINUTES BARRIER with a PERSONAL BEST time of 9:58.80 to place second overall! Cooper Eben ran the first 400m in 70 seconds, then ran the next 400m in 75 seconds (2:25 800m), and then ran the next 400m in 76 seconds (3:41 1200m), and then ran the next 400m in 76 seconds for a time of 4:57 at the Mile. On the Final Mile, Cooper Eben dropped the field, and caught up to the leader from Fenwick (9:57). Cooper Eben ran a 400m split of 75 seconds on the first 400m of the second mile (6:12 2000m), then ran the next 400m in 76 seconds (7:28 2400m), then ran the next 400m in 77 seconds (8:45 2800m), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE SPLIT of 73 seconds for a personal best time of 9:58.80! Cooper Eben was awarded a Medal for placing second overall. Northside Junior Danny Sobor ran a personal best time of 11:11.00 to place ninth overall. Danny Sobor ran the first 400m in 76 seconds, and then ran the next 400m in 86 (2:42 800m), and then ran the next 400m in 88 seconds (4:10 1200m), and then ran the next 400m in 85 seconds for a time of 5:35 at the Mile. On the Final Mile, Danny Sobor dropped a runner from Niles West and Plainfield East. Danny Sobor ran a 400m split of 87 seconds on the first 400m of the second mile (7:02 2000m), and then ran the next 400m in 84 seconds (8:26 2400m), then ran the next 400m in 84 seconds (9:50 2800m), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE SPLIT of 81 seconds for a personal best time of 11:11.00!

 In the 110m Hurdles Finals, Northside Junior Hersh Perlmutter ran an outstanding time of 16.37 to place fifth overall. Hersh Perlmutter was awarded a Medal for placing fifth overall. Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon ran a PERSONAL BEST time of 18.99 to place eighth overall.

 In the 800m run, Northside Junior Erik Zuehlke was scratched. Northside Junior Eduardo Herrera ran the first 400m in 69 seconds, and then ran the final 400m in 78 seconds for a PERSONAL BEST time of 2:27.6.

 In the 4x200m Relay, Kevin Jaburek came through as an emergency replacement for Hunter Speese. Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese, Sophomore Josh Williams, Junior Charlie Mesimore, and Senior Kevin Jaburek combined for a time of 1:42.94 to place fifth overall. Nathaniel Agharese, Josh Williams, Charlie Mesimore, and Kevin Jaburek were awarded Medals for placing fifth overall.

 In the 400m Dash, Northside Sophomore Mac Melto ran an outstanding time of 53.41 to place third overall. Mac Melto was awarded a Medal for placing third overall. Northside Sophomore Pat Duffy ran an outstanding time of 56.28.

 In the 300m Hurdles, Northside Junior Hersh Perlmutter BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a personal best time of 44.82. Hersh Perlmutter will be honored in practice with a watermelon for breaking the school record, and will also receive a plaque at the June 4, 2010 Track & Field Banquet. Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon ran an outstanding time of 50.18.

 In the 1600m Run, Northside Junior Wesley Laytham placed fourth overall with a season best time of 4:45. Wesley Laytham was awarded a Medal for placing fourth overall. Wesley Laytham ran the first 400m in 68 seconds, and then ran the next 400m in 72 seconds (2:20 800m), and then ran the next 400m in 75 seconds (3:35 1200m), and then ran the final 400m in a NEGATIVE SPLIT of 70 seconds for a season best time of 4:45.00. Northside Junior Charlie Mesimore ran an outstanding time of 4:53. Charlie Mesimore ran the first 400m in 70 seconds, and then ran the next 400m in 73 seconds (2:23 800m), and then ran the next 400m in 75 seconds (3:38 1200m), and then ran the final 400m in a EVEN SPLIT of 75 seconds for an outstanding time of 4:53.00.

 In the Weightman Relay, Northside came within .08 of a second of the school record (53.20, 2007). Northside Junior Hersh Perlmutter, Junior Mohammed Ahmed, Junior Eduardo Herrera, and Neal Capapas combined for a 4x100m Weightman relay time of 53.28 to place fourth overall!! Hersh Perlmutter, Mohammed Ahmed, Eduardo Herrera, and Neal Capapas were awarded Medals for placing fourth overall!

 In the 4x400m Relay, Northside Sophomore Pat Duffy ran a 400m split of 55.95 on the first leg of the relay, and then made a nice exchange to Sophomore Josh Williams. Josh Williams ran a 400m split of 57.95 on the second leg of the relay, and then made a nice exchange to Senior Cooper Eben. Cooper Eben ran a 58.03 400m split on the third leg of the relay, and then made a nice exchange to Junior Wesley Laytham. Wesley Laytham anchored the Mustangs with a 55.20 400m split, for a total time of 3:47.13 to place sixth overall. Pat Duffy, Josh Williams, Cooper Eben, and Wesley Laytham were awarded Medals for placing sixth overall.

The above athletes have ALL earned a Varsity letter this season! On two occassions, Northside has lost a meet by a single point this season. Every point scored is vital to the success of the TEAM. Inches and Tenths make a Champion!
