Cooper Eben places second in the Mile with incredible finish! Wesley Laytham anchors Northside 4x800m Relay to second! Hunter Speese WINS High Jump!

 On Wednesday, February 17, 2010, the Northside College Prep Varsity Mens and Sophomore-Freshman Boys Track Team traveled to Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois for the Spartan Indoor Classic. A special thanks to Northside Athletic director Andrew Mayer for the outstanding bus service.  

 The Spartan Indoor Classic featured Highland Park, Maine West, Northside College Prep, and host Glenbrook North High School. Maine West competed mostly in field events. 

 The meet was completed very efficiently, in only 2 hours, and had non-stop action on the Track, which put the crowd on their feet at all times, and created a fun atmosphere for all participating Teams. A special thanks to Glenbrook North Head Coach Matt Purdy for hosting an oustanding meet.  

  It was also a very friendly atmosphere as several reunions took place throughout the meet. Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon attended Glenbrook North from 1986-1990.

  The meet was very tight between Northside College Prep, Glenbrook North, Highland Park, and Maine West, and the finishes in all of the events were spectacular.

  In the Varsity 4x800m Relay, Northside Senior Cooper Eben ran the first leg of the relay in an 800m split of 2:11, and made a perfect exchange to Junior Erik Zuehlke. Erik Zuehlke ran the second leg of the relay in an 800m split of 2:19, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Jusuf Skelic. Jusuf Skelic ran the third leg of the relay in an 800m split of 2:14, and made a perfect exchange to Northside Junior Wesley Laytham. Northside Captain Wesley Laytham ran an outstanding 2:10 800m split on the final leg of the relay to secure second place for the Mustangs with an impressive finish and a total time of 8:54. Glenbrook North Junior Joe Poupard ran a 2:06 800m split on the final leg of the relay to hold off the Northside Mustangs for the win. 

  In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x800m Relay, Northside Sophomore Pedro Juarez ran a personal best 800m split of 2:33 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Patrick Brennan ran an outstanding 2:46 800m split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Javier Moluro ran a personal best 800m split of 2:41 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Calvin Gang anchored the Mustangs to second place overall with a personal best 800m split of 2:31 for a total time of 10:50.20.

 In the Varsity 55m High Hurdles, Northside Captain Hersh Perlmutter just returned from Florida in time for the meet, and a few days in the Florida sun helped him to a major time drop. Hersh Perlmutter ran a season best time of 8.82, and dropped 0.68 of a second! Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon also ran a season best time of 10.80.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 55 High Hurdles, Northside Sophomore Derek Lin had a big day, and ran a personal best time of 9.97. Derek Lin dropped 0.74 of a second! Northside Sophomore Luis Mesa ran an outstanding time of 11.90.

 In the Varsity 50m Dash, Northside had several huge time drops. Northside Senior Hunter Speese ran a season best time of 6.40. Northside Junior Ottmar Flores dropped 0.40 of a second for a personal best time of 7.10. Junior Jameel Ahmed ran a personal best time of 7.18. Junior Vincent Rodriguez dropped 0.49 of a second for a personal best time of 7.20. Northside Senior Sam Olver ran an outstanding time of 7.29. Junior Eduardo Herrera dropped 0.35 of a second for a personal best time of 7.30. Junior Andres Delgado dropped 0.11 of asecond for a personal best time of 7.60. Junior Mohammed Ahmed dropped 0.08 of a second for a personal best time of 7.64. 

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 50m Dash, Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese won it with an outstanding time of 6.70. Northside Sophomore Luis Mesa ran a personal best time of 6.90. Northside Sophomore Richard Do ran a season best time of 6.90. Northside Freshman Chaojie Gonzalez dropped 0.55 of a second for a personal best time of 7.05. Northside Sophomore Daniel Swanson-Nystrom ran a personal best time of 7.50.

 In the Varsity 800m run, a Highland Park runner won it with a time of 2:17. Northside Junior Dominic Sieminski ran a personal best time of 2:19.6 to place third overall. Sieminski dropped 4 seconds off his PR. Northside Junior Fahad Sarvari finished in fifth place overall with an outstanding time of 2:22.4. Northside Junior Noel Lopez finished in seventh place overall with an outstanding time of 2:24.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 800m run, Northside Sophomore Pat Duffy placed second overall with an outstanding time of 2:26.2. Northside Sophomore Josh Williams DROPPED NINE SECONDS for a personal best time of 2:26.9 to place third overall. Northside Sophomore Dan Graham DROPPED SIX SECONDS and ran a personal best time of 2:28.1. Northside Sophomore Pedro Juarez ran an outstanding time of 2:38. Northside Freshman Andy Voung ran an outstanding time of 3:06.

 The Varsity 4x160m Relay was scratched. In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x160m Relay, Northside Freshman Chaojie Gonzalez ran an outstanding 160m split of 21.01 on the first leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Luis Mesa ran an impressive 160m split of 22.97 on the second leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Brandon Licuanan ran an outstaning 160m split of 23.55 on the third leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Richard Do anchored the Mustangs to third place overall with an outstanding 23.66 160m split, and a total time of 1:31.19.

 In the Varsity 400m run, Northside Junior Andres Delgado ran a time of 67.50. Northside Junior Eduardo Herrera dropped 1.50 seconds for a personal best time of 68.50. Northside Senior Sam Olver ran a time of 69.60.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 400m run, Northside Sophomore Jusuf Skelic WON it with an outstanding time of 60.19. Northside Freshman Javier Mulero ran an outstanding time of 68.30.

 In the Varsity 55m Low Hurdles, Junior Hersh Perlmutter drop 0.30 of a second for a personal best time of 8.36. Junior Mohammad Hossain ran an outstanding time of 10.60. Senior Andrew Czyszczon also ran an outstanding time of 10.60.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 55m Low Hurdles, Sophomore Derek Lin ran a personal best time of 9.70. Sophomore Luis Mesa ran a time of 11.20.

 In the Varsity Mile, as soon as the gun went off, five athletes from Highland park formed the lead pack with Glenbrook North and Northside College Prep runners chasing them. At 800m, Northside Captains Cooper Eben and Wesley Laytham had seven runners in front of them, and began to move up and pass runners on every lap. Cooper Eben passed six runners! On the final lap, Cooper Eben had caught up to the leader, Highland Park's Arie Rothchild, and ran toe to toe with him to the finish line, to finish in second place with a season best time of 4:49.2. In the final 800 meters of the race, Cooper Eben passed six runners to place second overall! Cooper Eben also finished within one second of his personal record for the mile. Cooper Eben ran 160m splits of 26, 28 (54), 30 (84), 30 (1:54), 30 (2:24 800m split), 29 (2:53), 30 (3:23), 31 (3:54), 28 (4:22), and negative split on the final lap of 27 for a season best time of 4:49.2. Northside Junior Wesley Laytham finished in fifth place overall with a season best time of 4:55.3. Wesley Laytham dropped five seconds from the Lonnell Poole Invitational and passed two runners on the final 800m of the race! Wesley Laytham ran 160m splits of 26, 29 (55), 31 (86), 29 (2:25 800m split), 31 (2:56), 31 (3:27), 30 (3:57), 33 (4:27), and a NEGATIVE SPLIT of 28 on the final lap for a season best time of 4:55.3.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman Mile, Northside Sophomore Joseph Smith ran an outstanding time of 5:36.8 to place third overall. Joseph Smith ran the first 800m in 2:40, and then ran the final 800m in 2:56.8 for an outstanding time of 5:36.8. Northside Sophomore Alex Seibt DROPPED TEN SECONDS off his personal record for the mile with an outstanding time of 5:40.2 to place fourth overall. Alex Seibt ran the first 800m in 2:40, and then ran the final 800 metes in 3:00 for a personal best time of 5:40.2. Northside Freshman Brendan Kelly dropped six seconds off his personal record for the mile with an outstanding time of 6:02.9. Brendan Kelly ran the first 800m in 2:55, and then ran the final 800m in 3:07 for a personal best time of 6:02.9. Northside Freshman Calvin Gang DROPPED FOURTEEN SECONDS off his personal record for the mile with an outstnading time of 6:05.0. Calvin Gang ran the first 800m in 2:57, and then ran the final 800m in 3:08 for a personal best time of 6:05.0. Northside Freshman Patrick Brennan DROPPED EIGHT SECONDS off his personal record for the mile with an outstanding time of 6:08.5. Patrick Brennan ran the first 800m in 2:56, and then ran the final 800m in 3:12 for a personal best time of 6:08.5.

 In the Varsity 200m Dash, Northside Senior Hunter Speese ran an outstanding time of 26.51. Northside Senior Kevin Jaburek ran an outstanding time of 26.54. Northside Junior Hersh Perlmutter ran an outstanding time of 27.74. Northside also received outstanding performances in the 200m dash from: Junior Ottmar Flores (28.26), Junior Andres Delgado (28.36), and Junior Jameel Ahmed (28.56). Northside Junior Eduaro Herrera DROPPED TWO SECONDS for a personal best time of 30.20. Junior Vincent Rodriguez ran a personal best time of 30.51. Junior Mohammed Ahmed ran a personal best time of 31.13.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 200m Dash, Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese WON it with an outstanding time of 26.21. Freshman Chaojie Gonzalez ran an outstanding time of 28.27. Sophomore Richard Do ran an outstanding time of 29.32. Freshman Brandon Licuanan ran an outstanding time of 30.04.

 In the Varsity 4x160m Throwers Relay, Northside did not field a Team. Throwers Steven Burke, Luke Kotowski, and Nick Ruff did not make it to the meet. Kevin Jaburek arrived to the meet after the shot put had been completed due an exam at Northside College Prep. 

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x160m Throwers Relay, Northside Sophomore Pedro Juarez ran a 22.34 160m split on the first leg of the relay and made a perfect hand-off to Freshman Brandon Licuanan. Brandon Licuanan ran a 23.35 160m split on the second leg of the relay, and had a botched hand-off with Freshman Kapil Garg. After dropping the baton, Kapil Garg made a nice recovery and ran a 39.41 160m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Sophomore Joseph Smith. Joseph Smith anchored the relay with a 25.24 160m split to anchor the Mustangs to a total time of 1:50.34.

  In the Varsity Shot Put, Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon threw an outstanding 33'3. Junior Jameel Ahmed ran a personal best 26'11.5. Junior Mohammed Ahmed threw an outstanding 24'6.5. Junior Andres Delgado improved 1'0 with a personal best throw of 20'4.

 In Sophomore-Freshman Shot Put, Northside Sophomore Joseph Smith threw an outstanding 25'2. Northside Freshman Brandon Licuanan threw a personal best 22'0. Northside Freshman Kapil Garg threw a personal best 21'11! Northside Sophomore Pedro Juarez threw a personal best 14'7. 

 In the High Jump, the Varisty and Sophomore-Freshman athletes were combined into a single Varsity division. The opening height was 4'6. Northside Junior Ottmar Flores and Daniel Swanson-Nystrom made three outstanding attempts at 4'6, but were unable to clear it. Highland Park's Michael Shoreburg, Glenbrook North's Schkulay, and Northside Sophomore Dan Graham, Freshman Nathaniel Agharese, Senior Geoffrey Gould, Sophomore Josh Williams, and Senior Hunter Speese all cleared 4'6. The bar was then raised to 4'8. Highland Park's Michael Shoreburg, Northside Freshman Nathaniel Agharese, and Northside Sophomore Dan Graham all made three outstanding attempts at 4'8, but were unable to clear it. Glenbrook North's Sckulay, Northside Senior Geoffrey Gould, Northside Sophomore Josh Williams, and Northside Senior Hunter Speese all cleared 4'8. The bar was then raised to 4'10. Glenbrook North's Schkulay, and Northside Senior Geoffrey Gould made three outstanding attempts at 4'10, but were unable to clear it. Northside Senior Geoffrey Gould, and Glenbrook North's Schkulay finished in sixth and fifth place, respectively. Northside Sophomore Josh Williams and Northside Senior Hunter Speese both cleared 4'10 on their seccond attempt. The bar was then raised to 5'0. Northside Junior Luke Sobieraj then entered the competition and cleared 5'0 on his first attempt. Northside Sophomore Josh Williams made three outstanding attempts at 5'0, but was unable to clear it. He may have run the 800m run prior to the bar being raised to 5'0. Josh Williams finished in fourth place overall, scoring varsity points, to earn his second consecutive varsity letter. The bar was then raised to 5'2. Northside Senior Hunter Speese cleared it on his first attempt. Highland Park's John Bekkez then entered the competition and cleared 5'2 on his second attempt. Northside Junior Luke Sobieraj made three outstanding attempts at 5'2, but was unable to clear it. Luke Sobieraj finished in third place overall. The bar was then raised to 5'4. Northside Senior Hunter Speese and Highland Park's John Bekkez cleared it on their first attempt. The cross bar was then raised to 5'6. Highland Park's John Bekkez made three outstanding attempts at 5'6, but was unable to clear it, and was awaded second place. Northside Senior Hunter Speese cleared 5'6 on his first attempt to secure victory. The bar was then raised to 5'9, which would be a personal record for Hunter Speese. Hunter Speese made three outstanding attempts at 5'9, but was unable to clear it, and was awarded first place as the last remaining athlete in the competition.

 In the Pole Vault, Northside Junior Luke Sobieraj finished in fourth place with a vault of 7'6.

 In the Long Jump, Northside Junior Luke Sobieraj finished in sixth place overall with a jump of 16'5.5. Northside Sophomore Derek Lin jumped an outstanding 16'5. Northside Senior Geoffrey Gould jumped an outstanding 15'11. Northside Sophomore Josh Williams jumped an outstanding 15'11. Northside Senior Andrew Czyszczon jumped a personal record 13'4.75. Northside Junior Ottmar Flores jumped a personal best 12'11. Northside Sophomore Daniel Swanson-Nystrom jumped an outstanding 12'10.

 In the Triple Jump, Northside Sophomore Derek Lin finished in sixth place overall with a jump of 35'6.75. Northside Sophomore Josh Williams jumped an outstanding 34'2. Northside Junior Noel Lopez jumped a personal best 33'8. Northside Sophomore Dan Graham improved 3'0 with a personal best jump of 32'6.5. Northside Senior Geoffrey Gould jumped a personal best 29'3.25.

 In the Varsity 4x400m Relay, Northside Junior Dominic Sieminski ran a 57.81 400m split on the first leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Junior Noel Lopez. Junior Noel Lopez ran a 60.44 400m split on the second leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Captain Cooper Eben. Senior Cooper Eben ran a 59.94 400m split on the third leg of the relay, and made a perfect exchange to Captain Wesley Laytham. Junior Wesley Laytham anchored the Mustangs to third place overall with a 57.25 400m split for a total time of 3:55.44.

 The meet was not scored by host Glenbrook North, in an effort to provide a non-stop action on the track. All four schools, along with York High School, among others, will meet again in a scored meet at Spartan Relays on April 30, 2010. Spartan Relays is the best high school relay meet in Illinois.

 Northside College Prep determines Varsity letters by Varsity points scored. As a result, a complete list of points scored has been compiled for the purposes of determing Varsity letters. The point scale is determined by the total number of teams in the meet. There were a total of four teams (Northside, Maine West, Highland Park, and Glenbrook North) in the meet. The following point scale was used for individual events: 6-4-3-2-1, and 6-4-2 was used for scoring relays.
