MARIA TORRES BREAKS SCHOOL RECORD IN THE TRIPLE JUMP AT THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS!!! 35'4.25!!!

 On Friday, May 22, 2009, Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Girls Sprints / Jumps Coach David Diaz, Jennifer Kane and Marie Torres awoke at dawn to travel to the State Championships at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. The Mustangs traveled to the State Championships in a Ford Explorer, complete with a video screen and movies for the trip to Charleston, Illinois.

 Upon arrival, O'Brien Stadium was filled close to its capacity, and spectators, fans, and Teams, had to park over a half mile away from the Stadium because of the size of the sell-out crowd. Outside the Stadium, there was a large festival of Track & Field souvenir vendors, and food and beverage stands. Maria Torres was given a State Qualifier Pin from the IHSA, along with her Triple Jump number.

 In preparation for the prelims, Maria Torres spent the morning preparing for the prelims on the Triple Jump runway inside Eastern Illinois University's Indoor Track.   

 The Triple Jump was one of the last events of the day, and had a large crowd facing the runway. After each jump, the official's displayed the distance of the jump on a performance scoreboard right next to the Triple Jump pit. On her second jump of the day, Northside Senior  Maria Torres BROKE THE SCHOOL RECORD with a jump of 35'4.25 to finish in the top 17 in the State!!

 Northside Head Coach Jon Gordon, Triple Jump Coach David Diaz, Jennifer Kane, and Maria Torres celebrated her new school record in the Triple Jump and outstanding season at Cracker Barrell. Jennifer Kane and Maria Torres went all out and had Vanilla Bean Ice cream and Strawberry Short Cake with whipped cream at the end of the meal to celebrate the best season in Northside history.  

 Maria Torres will be honored with her teammates at the Northside Track & Field Banquet on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at Hackney's in Glenview, Illinois.
