The "Jim Nichols" 800m run is the showcase event at the Ostberg Sophomore-Freshman Indoor Championships. A list of past winners is permenantly displayed, and a special award is given to the winner of the "Jim Nichols" 800m run in honor of Fenton All-American Jim Nichols. The 800m run at Fenton is 6.5 laps on a 135 Yards track.

In 2008, Northside Freshman Wesley Laytham ran a 800m time of 2:21.30 in the Jim Nichols 800m run. However, Laytham had improved dramatically since his freshman year, and had run a 2:11 800m split as recently as Sunday, March 16, 2009 at the CPS Indoor Championships and was considered a top contender this year for the "Jim Nichols" 800m run. Upon arrival to Fenton, Laytham learned that he was seeded second in the 800m run this year to Niles North's Kosta Parazoglou. It was going to take no less than a 2:11 800m time to win it.

After the athletes were lined up in their respective lanes, the gun was fired. Northside Sophomore Wesley Layham ran the first half lap in 9 seconds, and was at 28 seconds after 1.5 laps of the 6.5 laps race (800m run / 880 Yards). Wesley Laytham ran the next 135 yards in 22 seconds (50 seconds total time for 2.5 laps (337.50 Yards)), and then ran the next 135 yards in 19 seconds (69 seconds total time for 3.5 laps (472.50 Yards)) and found himself in the lead with a little over 300 yards to the finish!!! Wesley Laytham then ran the next 135 yards in 22 seconds (1:31 total time for 4.5 laps (607.50 Yards)). However, West Chicago's Guandi Sterle and Buffalo Grove's Eric Schiller passed Wesley Laytham for the lead, and at the same time Laytham felt the effects of a tough pool workout earlier in the day during PE class, and couldn't respond to Sterle's and Schiller's surge. Wesley Laytham ran the next 135 yards in 22 seconds (1:53 total time for 5.5 laps (742.50 Yards)). Wesley Laytham then ran the final 135 yards in 24 seconds, and three more runners passed him on the final lap. West Chicago's Guandi Sterle won it with a time of 2:11.0. Buffalo Grove's Eric Schiller finished in second place with a time of 2:11.8. Lake Park's Abrahm Pedraza finished in third place with a time of 2:14.3. Charlie Mesimore looked back several times on the final lap, as he ran towards the finish line. It was the strongest he has looked in a race this year.
