Northside Varsity Women 6-2! Maria Torres ties school record in High Jump with jump of 4'8! Anna Parks second in the 800m run!

 On Friday, February 13, 2009, the Northside Varsity Women traveled to Evanston High School in Evanston, Illinois for the Wildcats Indoor Classic. The meet featured Taft, Schurz, Michelle Clark, Northside College Prep, Mather, Von Steuben, Brooks, Seton Academy, and host Evanston High School.

  Evanston High School has won the Womens State Track Title six times, and is a legendary Track program. 1960 Olympic Silver Medalist and former Evanston Coach Willie May looked on as the Evanston Wildcats held off a very impressive Mather Team to win the meet by a score of 91-74. Northside College Prep finished in third place with 38 points, and posted victories over Von Steuben (22 Points), Seton Academy (16 points), Schurz (11 points), Michelle Clark (6 points), Brooks (4 points), and Taft (1 point). Individual events and relays were scored 10-8-6-4-2-1.

 In the High Jump, it quickly came down to two jumers, Northside Senior Maria Torres, and Mather's Ashley. Ashley has a unique high jump style that existed prior to the fosbery flop, the forward roll, and she did it with perfection. Ashley jumped a season best 4'8. Northside Senior Maria Torres tied the school record with a jump of 4'8 to force a first place tie! The tie was broken by giving first place to the athlete with the least number of total misses in the competition. Mather's Ashley was awarded first place by having one less miss than Torres. Maria Torres was awarded second place. Maria Torres almost cleared 4'10 on her final attempt, and had the height, but her trail leg hit the cross bar on the way down.

 In the Long Jump, Evanston's Caines won it with a jump of 16'4.5. Von Steuben's Gunn finished in second with a jump of 14'3.5. Evanston's Schultz finished in third place with a jump of 14'3. Northside Senior Maria Torres finished in fourth place with a jump of 13'9.5. Evanston's Julia Farengz finished in fifth place with a jump of 13'3. Evanston's Kiarra Williams completed the scoring by finishing in sixth place with a jump of 12'7.55. Northside Senior Maria Zdunek jumped an outstanding 11'3.5. Northside Senior Gayatri Satam jumped an outstanding 11'1.5. Northside Senior Katy Ceisel jumped a personal best 9'4. Northside Senior Janette Szestowicki jumped a personal best 8'11.

 In the Shot Put, Von Steuben's Mitrovick won it with a throw of 30'2. Schurz Bates finished in second place with a throw of 27'11. Northside Sophomore Caeleigh Renkosiak finished in third place with a throw of 27'6.5. Renkosiak improved by 2'0 from the New Trier Sophomore-Freshman Extravaganza meet. Mather's Massard finished in fourth place with a throw of 25'11. Schurz's Hill finished in fifth place with a throw of 25'6. Northside Sophomore Katie Dugan completed the scoring by finishing in sixth place with a throw of 24'5.5. Dugan also improved by 2'0 from the New Trier Sophomore-Freshman Extravaganza meet. Northside Sophomore Tiffany Tran had the biggest improvement on the day, Tiffany Tran threw a personal best 19'7, and improved by 4'0!

 In the Varsity 4x176 Yards Relay, Northside Senior Katy Ceisel ran a personal best 29.38 split on the first leg of the relay, and made a nice exchange to Janette Szetowicki. Northside Senior Janette Szetowicki ran an impressive 26.59 split on the second leg of the relay, and made a great hand-off to Gayatri Satam. Northside Senior Gayatri Satam ran a 26.47 split on the third leg of the relay and made a perfect hand-off to Maria Torres. Northside Senior Maria Torres anchored the Mustangs to sixth place overall with an impressive 25.01 split for a total time of 1:47.43.

 Mather Sophomore Kellion Gordon passed Evanston on the final turn to win the Varsity 4x176 Relay with a total time of 1:30. Evanston finished in second with a time of 1:31. Michelle Clark High School finished in third with a time of 1:38. Von Steuben finished in fourth with a time of 1:39. Brooks finished in fifth with a time of 1:43. Northside finished in sixth to complete the scoring with a time of 1:47.43.

 In the Sophomore-Freshman 4x176 Yards Relay, Northside Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo ran a 27.38 split on the first leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Vivian Lei ran a 27.31 split on the second leg of the relay. Northside Sophomore Nina Coomes ran an impressive 26.37 split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Freshman Rosailie Abbey anchored the mustangs to fifth place overall with a 27.38 split, for a total time of 1:48.38.

 In the 800m run, an Evanston runner took a commanding lead from the start, and with only 176 yards remaining in the race, she walked off the Track, despite encouragement from spectators to continue to the finish line. Mather's Aden Aience and Northside Senior Anna Parks quickly passed the standing still runner. Mather's Aden Aience won it with a time of 2:38. Northside Senior Anna Parks finished in second place with an outstanding time of 2:40. Evanston's Mertz finished in third place with a time of 2:42. A Mather runner finished in fourth place with a time of 2:43. Evanston finished in fifth and sixth place with times of 2:45, and 2:46 respectively. Northside Junior Bessie Nolan ran an outstanding time of 2:51. Northside Senior Adaora Achufusi ran a personal best time of 2:54. Northside Senior Ani Zotti ran an outstanding time of 2:56.

 In the 60 yard Hurdles, Mather won it with a time of 9.48. Evanston runner finished in second with a time of 9.50. Mather's Johnson finished in third with a time of 11.78. Northside Senior Maria Zdunek finished in fourth place with a time of 11.84.

 In the 60 Yard Dash, Evanston completely dominated it with 5 of the top 6 places. Evanston took first, second, and third, with times of 7.5, 7.6, and 7.7. Seton Academy's Dejanae Terry stopped Evanston from sweeping the event, with a personal best time of 7.8 to place fourth overall. Evanston took fifth and sixth respectively with times of 8.00, and 8.10. Northside Freshman Vivian Lei ran a personal best time of 9.18. Northside Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo ran a personal best time of 9.22. Northside Freshman Rosailie Abbey ran a personal best time of 9.47.

 In the 528 Yards Run, an Evanston runner won it with an outstanding time of 81 seconds. Seton Academy finished in second with a time of 82 seconds. Mather finished in third, fourth, and fifth respectively with times of 1:27, 1:28, and 1:29. Taft completed the scoring by finishing in sixth place with a time of 1:33. Northside Junior Bessie Nolan ran a personal best time of 1:36. Northside Senior Ani Zotti ran a personal best time of 1:39.

 In the 176 Yards Dash (Sophomore-Freshman Only), Northside Freshman Rosailie Abbey ran a personal best time of 27.50. Northside Freshman Vivian Lei ran a personal best time of 27.53.

 In the 4x352 Yards Relay, Northside Freshman Hannah Lea Dorvelo ran a 61.50 split on the first leg of the relay. Northsie Sophomore Nina Coomes ran a 56.35 split on the the second leg of relay. Northside Senior Adaora Achufusi ran a 54.50 split on the third leg of the relay. Northside Senior Anna Parks anchored the Mustangs to third place finish with a 53.79 split, for a total time of 3:46.18.
