Rising Stars Top The Chicago Demons To Win The 2nd Annual Columbus Day Challenge In Deerfield, Illinois

Michael "Juice" Thompson (Chicago Lincoln Park) and Mike Stovall (Chicago Marshall) were named co-MVP as the Rising Stars defeated the Chicago Demons 65-50 to win the 2nd Annual Rising Stars and ChicagoHoops.com Columbus Day Challenge on Sunday in Deerfield, Illinois. The Rising Stars jumped out to an early lead, and held firm throughout en route to winning the crown. The Rising Stars went to overtime in the semifinals to stop Evan Turner (St. Joseph), Xavier Humphrey (Fenwick) and the Illinois Stars II to advance to the title game. Turner, who is verballed to Ohio State, was dominant throughout the weekend. The Rising Stars team also featured Northwestern-bound Mike Capocci, Western Illinois-bound Ceola Clark, Jeffrey Jordan (Loyola Academy), Blake Saunders (Hinsdale Central) and Kevin Jermyn (Dundee-Crown). The runner-up Chicago Demons topped Illinois-bound Demetri McCamey (St. Joseph), DeAndre McCamey (St. Joseph), Josh Crittle (Chicago Hales Franciscan) and Kevin Dillard (Homewood-Flossmoor) to advance to the title game. The Demons also featured Michael Horton (Chicago Von Steuben), Darius Fields (Chicago Von Steuben), Isiah Martin (Chicago Morgan Park), Parish West (Chicago Morgan Park), Wilfredo Escobar (Chicago Prosser), Warren Poetzing (Chicago Von Steuben) and Devin Zajac (Chicago Von Steuben). The Milwaukee Spartans rallied from a 9-point deficit with less than 3 minutes to play to defeat the Rising Stars 15-U squad to win the Consolation Championship. Dennis Thomas of Milwaukee Bradley Tech was MVP of the Consolation Bracket. He received major support from 6-2 Dwight Buycks (Milwaukee Bay View) who scored 25 points in the Consolation title game. Marcus Jordan (Loyola Academy) scored 16 points, Nik Garcia (Niles West) had 14 points including 4 three-point baskets and 6-7 Jordan Prosser (Eureka) added 10 points for the Rising Stars.
