LAMBETH MIDGETS WIN ONTARIO "C" GOLD

Posted by Paul Barton on Sep 06 2006 at 05:00PM PDT
Over the weekend of August 18th-20th the Lambeth Midget team participated in the OBA Midget C Championships in Leamington and came away with the Gold medal. On Friday the boys started the tournament with Geoff Mann shutting down Dundas 7-0 giving up only 3 hits. Saturday morning Nathan Naylor continued the pitching dominance shutting down a powerful Georgetown team to the tune of a 5-1 victory. Game 3 proved to be a turning point as Josh Jones threw a complete game 4 hitter, but was given no run support and took a tough 1-0 loss against Petrolia. This seemed to wake up the boys, as they realized they could not coast through the weekend. With their backs against the wall, Lambeth persevered and Geoff Mann again took to the hill Saturday afternoon and beat Essex with a complete game 3 hitter in which the offence squeezed home another 3 runs for a 3-0 victory. This win was enough to put Lambeth into the OBA Championship games Sunday against Petrolia. Lambeth would have to beat Petrolia 2 times for the gold. On Sunday the rains fell and the boys had to sit around for 6 hours waiting for the fields to dry. Lambeth took the field a determined bunch. Kyle Robinson set the tone for the game hitting the first pitch he saw off they very tip of the fence against the Petrolia ace. This seemed to stun Petrolia and Lambeth was off to the races. Steve Truax and Trevor Scott provided key hits and Nathan Naylor again was given the task of shutting down a potent offence and he succeeded. Naylor gave up only 6 hits and pitching a complete game with Lambeth winning 6-2, forcing a sudden death championship game. In the sudden death championship, we finally saw the powerful offence Lambeth had shown all season. Scoring run after run after run, Darren Boyce and Trevor Scott led the offensive parade with Boyce going 4-4 with 5 rbi’s, and Scott getting on base just about every time he could this entire weekend. A sore and tired Geoff Mann sucked it up and took the hill again, and pitching with an empty tank, he let the defense do the work and got numerous ground outs. Also, an injured Kevin Musty gave another gutsy performance behind the plate, catching his 4th game in a row. With Petrolia worn out, the boys from Lambeth beat Petrolia 10-0 in a 5 inning mercy, giving them Lambeth’s first OBA Championship. What a great way to end a truly perfect season. Lambeth: 2006 LDBA Pennant winners, 2006 LDBA Champions, Brantford Tournament Champions, Dundas Tournament Champions, Orangeville Tournament Finalists and OBA Champions… With a final Record of 43-11-4 Congratulations go to first year coach Andrew Mann, manager Bob Boyce who has been with the team since rookie ball. Without Bob’s hard work and dedication, Lambeth baseball would not still exist.
