RAIDERS Rest, Finally! After Eight Tough Weeks of Football!
Randell Owens joked that this is the week that he and his coaching staff, “remind their wives that they’re married.”
After eight-straight weeks of football games — nine, including the preseason scrimmage — Madison County players and coaches finally get an off-date. The Raiders return to action, Oct. 31, against Apalachee.
“We need to recharge the batteries a little bit,” Owens said.
The Raiders (2-6) also get a break from five-straight losses, the last two of which were dealt in painful fashion.
The team fell to Loganville in the final seconds, 13-10, on Oct. 10, and then lost to Heritage, 7-0, last Friday.
With time to rest, the Raiders now gear up for two of their toughest tests of the season, facing Apalachee and Clarke Central to close the year.
The Raiders, who have been eliminated from state playoff contention, will try to play the role of spoiler since Apalachee (5-2) is third in the region and Clarke Central (6-1) is tied with Loganville for the 8-AAAA lead.
Owens said his team is still playing with a lot of fight, as evidenced by its last two games, and believes it can still prove something in this final stretch of the season.
“We’re playing for pride, obviously,” Owens said. “We can still show people that we’ve got pride and character and don’t quit.”
The key, he said, is making sure the team doesn’t lose heart during tough times. Given the Raiders’ five-game losing streak, Owens said there are those, “who think we should go out there and hang ourselves.”
