DEA Advances to Finals with a 2-0 Shutout of Newton Spurs

Posted by Dale Dubois on Jun 21 2006 at 05:00PM PDT
DEA will be heading back to the finals for the second time in two seasons. DEA shut out the Southern division 2-0 on Sunday and will be heading to Stoneham, MA for the final match. DEA will now be matched up with the Marion-Mariners. This is the same team DEA beat in the finals last season. Sundays game was extremely hot and DEA did not have a full squad. Sportsmans field was looking very large on this day. DEA had to play smart and that they did. DEA held possession of the ball and pick and chose their runs. The wide field and the DEA passing game would take its toll on the less fit Newton Spurs. However, it would not be until the late in the second half until DEA would break the scoreless game open. Both teams would ring the cross bar in the first half but there would be no scoring. The second half is when DEA started to show its fitness. They knocked the ball out wide and continued to pressure Newton. About midway through the second half, Jeff Guild would receive the ball out on the left sideline. He would carry the ball in towards the corner. Jeff would see Jim McCall on the far side. Jeff hit a great cross into the box. The ball would be headed by a Newton defender past his own keeper for a DEA Goal. This took a lot of the wind out of the Newton side and sparked Bedford. DEA would continue to pressure. with about 10 minutes left, John Guild would flick the ball on to Jim McCall, who was streaking down the right side. Jim would beat one defender and neatly chip the ball over the keeper for the insurance tally. The Bedford defense shut out the rest of the Newton attempts and earned the shut out. Jim Goddard was solid in the net as usual. DEA heads to Stoneham for the finals at 8:30 AM on Sunday at the Broadway Fields. See locations for a map and directions. DEA will look to beat the Mariners for the second time in a row in the finals. Go DEA !!!
